This is extremely low priority, marking this here just so it's documented as a thing that was considered.

Describe the solution you would like.

It would be good to have a way to identify new objects in AFM images when there has been a change in an image.

• take two images
• determine any features that are present in the new one that was not in the old one, or vice versa.

Perhaps simply aligning the images (by shifting and subtracting, finding the minimal difference) and then doing simple object segmentation would work?

Leaving note here for future reference since need to switch project.

Good progress made on this, translational alignment is easy with calculating cost based on mere subtraction.

However it seems each image is slightly rotated, possibly requiring cost-based rotation in addition.

Alternatively could use feature based image registration, using the different detected grains and splines / ordered coords / feret diameters / other invariant quantities and then use those to apply a matrix transformation onto the image.
