Any way to search .github/ by default?

Not sure if I missed something, but while skipping untracked dotfiles/dotdirs such as .git kind of makes sense, I don't think it ever makes sense to skip the .github folder, or probably any other folder that's git-tracked (but I don't think rg knows about this).

I of course do not want to opt out from skipping other dot folders like .git...

You can whitelist /.github via echo '!/.github/ > .rgignore in your repository root.

ripgrep itself does it:

ripgrep/.ignore

Can I somehow do this globally for the whole system, ie something in /etc or via ~/.ripgreprc?
I have a huge amount of repos so doing it everywhere (and committing that file or putting it on the local exclode list) would not be pleasant...

Yes, using --ignore-file:

Note that I made an edit changing echo '!/.github/' to echo '!.github'.

I guess there is no way to make ripgrep expand ~ or $HOME in the arg to be able to use this in a more portable way w/o a hardcoded /home/myusername?

(your example works fine but of course the $HOME is resolved before writing to the file)

If you need more sophistication, then I suggest writing a wrapper script around ripgrep that does what you want.
