Traditional types of paper made from fibres such as paper mulberry (<span lang="ja-Latn">kōzo</span>)[^bark] were used in the construction process. Rougher, heavier paper was used for the internal core of the card, which would then be coated with higher quality white paper which had been printed with the black outlines using a woodblock press. Glue was also made heavier with the addition of powdered clay or stone, to give extra heft to the cards. After this, the colour of the cards was added using stencils and brushes, then the cards were cut and the rear of the cards back-pasted with contrasting paper, and the edges folded over. A final step in the process was to run the cards through a roller to polish them and provide the curvature expected by the players.
