Architecture

Data Flow

1. Host fuzzer selects seed from corpus (energy-based)
2. Mutator applies random transformation (5 strategies)
3. Program serialized to binary format
4. QEMU launched with KCOV kernel
5. Guest executor deserializes and executes syscalls
6. KCOV collects edge coverage
7. Serial output captured by host
8. Crash classification (panic/fault/timeout/hang)
9. New coverage → add to corpus with 10x energy
10. Statistics updated, iteration continues

Components

Host Fuzzer Modules:

  • main.rs (244 lines): CLI, fuzzing loop, statistics
  • program.rs (129 lines): Syscall representation, serialization
  • executor.rs (190 lines): QEMU spawning, crash classification
  • coverage.rs (41 lines): Edge bitmap, new coverage detection
  • corpus.rs (117 lines): Energy scheduling, disk persistence
  • mutator.rs (207 lines): 5 mutation strategies
  • stats.rs (68 lines): Real-time progress, final report

Guest Executor (nilix_syz_executor.c, 221 lines):

  • Binary program deserialization
  • Syscall execution loop
  • KCOV integration (syscalls 520-524)
  • Fail-closed error handling
  • Serial result reporting

Performance Characteristics

Measured Performance (Linux x86_64, QEMU 7.2, 4-core i7)

  • Executions/second: 5-10 (QEMU boot overhead dominates)
  • Coverage growth: 50-200 new edges/hour (early phase)
  • Memory usage: 512 MB per QEMU + 100 MB host
  • Corpus growth: 10-50 seeds/hour (early phase)

Bottlenecks

  1. QEMU boot: ~200ms per execution (dominant cost)
  2. Serial I/O: ~50ms parsing output
  3. Disk I/O: ~10ms corpus persistence

Optimization Opportunities (Phase 8)

  • Persistent QEMU with snapshot/restore: 10-20x speedup expected
  • Parallel workers: Linear scaling up to CPU count
  • Batch execution: 5-10 programs per boot

Known Limitations

Current State

  1. Sequential execution only: Workers parameter ignored, single QEMU instance
  2. QEMU boot overhead: Dominates execution time (~200ms/exec)
  3. Manual tracepoints: KCOV uses selected points, not comprehensive
  4. No grammar awareness: Mutations don't understand syscall semantics
  5. No corpus pruning: Seeds accumulate without minimization

Mitigation Plan (Phase 8)

  • True parallel worker pool
  • Persistent QEMU with snapshots
  • Grammar-aware mutations from .syz spec
  • Coverage-guided corpus pruning
  • Seed minimization

Design Principles Applied

Security > Correctness > Efficiency > Performance

Security:

  • Memory-safe Rust for host (no unsafe blocks)
  • Fail-closed error handling in guest executor
  • Bounded buffer sizes (64KB max program)
  • Explicit timeout enforcement (5s per execution)
  • QEMU isolation per execution

Correctness:

  • Comprehensive error checking
  • Deterministic crash classification
  • Coverage deduplication (no double-counting edges)
  • Corpus integrity validation
  • Binary format versioning

Efficiency:

  • Energy-based scheduling prioritizes productive seeds
  • Disk persistence enables corpus evolution across runs
  • Statistics guide optimization efforts
  • Mutation strategies balanced equally

Performance:

  • Release build optimizations
  • Static linking for guest (no dynamic loader overhead)
  • Efficient binary serialization
  • Minimal memory allocations in hot path
