You have to ensure that you are using the esp8266 version 2.4 of the sdk in board manager, then install SdFat-1.0.16

If you do this, then this library will compile on moden Adrduino IDE

I was able to compile with ESP8266 Arduino Core v2.5.0 and SdFat v1.1.4.

Now, in 2023, I am unable to get the right combination for platform and packages in platformio to get it to compile.
