nxterm arrow keys problem

When keeping the up or down arrows keys pressed permanently for a few seconds in edit in xterm in nxdsktop, the whole system halts, or mouse and keyboard input are lost.

I can't get this to duplicate. Can you try running nxstart, then running nxterm, then running "edit /etc/terrmcap" and then holding the arrow key? If this works, then perhaps it is the actual file that is being edited with edit. What is that file, how long is it, etc? We need to determine if this is a bug in edit or something else.

You mean the system halts sometimes, and other times the mouse and keyboard input are lost?

If you can find or save the file that is being edited with edit, and run it under nxstart, that would be best. If not, and the problem only occurs when running on nxdsktop with a file that is created with nxdsktop, then give directions on exactly how to duplicate. It is possible the file has contents that are causing edit to busy loop or fail.

I am editing /bootopts
Aha, it seems it is when the file is screen scrolled, you need to leave the current screen and go back for example.
Always halts completely. You can not do anyhting.

Can you explain in more detail? When I edit /bootopts I can use arrow keys up and down and the screen scrolls properly up and down, with no halting. I don't know what you mean by "leave the current screen and go back".

So it is both:

• you must go more than 25 lines down (leave the current screen), so the editor must scroll to show you the next lines
• and you keep the up or down key continuously pressed

It halts every time.

I am running QEMU, not real hardware. I start nxstart from the shell prompt, then click 'term' and type edit /bootopts. I then hold the down arrow key down continually. The cursor starts moving downwards, then the screen scrolls upwards. At the end of the file, I hold the up arrow key and the same thing happens in reverse. What system are you running this on, and can you try on another system and/or emulator?

This is it. Now I am confused where the source of the problem might be.
I am using 86 box version 5. The emulator menus are OK, everything inside of it is frozen.
I just tested. It halts with nxstart as well.

Well, keep plugging away at using 86box to see if there's other ways to hang the system. Perhaps run vi on same file and ^D/^U to scroll up and down and see what happens. We can then see whether it's perhaps an ANSI sequence that edit is emitting that an issue, or perhaps nxterm scroll code. Also try just scrolling text with nxterm using "cat /bootopts" etc and see if that does anything. Or try editing a longer file like /etc/perror and just scroll down, not up, etc.
