Zenodo.org is a great service for hosting datasets. Assuming you are comfortable sharing your Garmin data, this would allow you to keep your data outside of the repo and in a dataset that is likely to survive the test of time. Backed by CERN and EU, it is something to be taken seriously!
Among other things, this would allow you to add a CI aspect, where the data can be fetched from Zenodo and used to run your tests on a known dataset.
I won't add another issue for unit tests as you're the master of this space but consider setting up pytest after getting your Zenodo test data in place.
