incorrect error message `syntax error: '!' unexpected` for `${${v}}`

With the ksh93u+m 1.0.10-2 Debian/unstable package (Debian bug 1121521) and with the dev branch:

$ echo ${${v}}
ksh93: syntax error: `!' unexpected

The error message is incorrect and confusing, as there is no "!". It should have been bad substitution like in mksh, dash and bash (note that this syntax is correct in zsh).

just tried that on OSX and Ubuntu. both say:

# ksh93u:
echo ${$(v)}  # → /bin/ksh: ${$(v)}: bad substitution 
# ksh93u+m
echo ${$(v)}  # → -ksh: ${$(v)}: bad substitution

so looks good. no idea what is different on your side. what is the value of v on your side?

You misread the testcase. These are curly brackets, not parentheses. The value of v is empty.

sorry for the noise, then. can confirm what you see (with Version AJM 93u+ 2012-08-01, too: so that has been so for a long time...)
