Opening SQL window crashes application since 1.22.2 (RM #5081)

Using Xubuntu 19.10, since upgrading to 1.22.2, whenever I open a SQL window the application closes, the following error is seen in journalctl:

This error is consistent.
I have attempted a full removal and reinstall and get the same issue.

version from the ubuntu repo @1.22.2-5build1@ works
version from postgresql repo: @1.22.2-6.pgdg19.10+1@ gives the error.

pgAdmin3 hasn't been support for a couple of years now.
