Problem

When an ACP agent rejects a new session because it has no usable credentials (JSON-RPC -32000, auth required), the thread shows only Failed to open acpRegistry provider session provider-session:provider-instance:<instance>:thread:<thread>:<uuid>. That message has no sign-in guidance and includes an internal id. It appears in the error banner and again in the "Provider session failed to open" item, which stays after the banner is dismissed. The server log has the real cause (AcpRequestError: Authentication required), but the thread does not. Reproduced on main 84537c4 in the web dev server with a local ACP provider instance (agentId factory-droid, and a second one with no agentId) running apps/server/scripts/acp-mock-agent.ts. The mock passes the provider probe, then answers session/new with auth required, the same way Factory Droid fails in the report.

Change

curatedCauseMessages in packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.ts now recognizes an AcpRequestError with code -32000 (the ACP schema's auth-required code, which the runtime and the registry probe already treat as auth required). For that error it returns a fixed T3 message: "The provider needs you to sign in. Sign in from its provider settings or with its own CLI or app, then retry the turn." ProviderTurnStartService and RunExecutionService already check knownProviderFailureMessage before falling back to the wrapper's text, so session-open failures and turn failures both show the guidance. The agent's own error text is still not shown.

Scope and approval

Fixes #29534

This covers the direct-thread part of the issue: an actionable message in place of the generic error with an internal id. The same message reaches a delegated child's failure item. It does not address the reported ten-minute session/new stall in the delegated child, whose cause the report leaves unconfirmed.

Verification

  • packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.test.ts: the new test tells the user to sign in when an ACP agent rejects the session as unauthenticated fails on main (an ACP auth-required failure should have a curated message: expected undefined to not equal undefined) and passes here (13/13).
  • apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/testkit/AcpRegistryReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts previously asserted the buggy /^Failed to open acpRegistry provider session \S+\.$/ text for the -32000 case. It now asserts the sign-in message end to end through orchestration (15/15).
  • Antigravity (AntigravityAdapterV2, antigravityAuthSupport), ProviderTurnStartService, RunExecutionService, ProviderSessionManager, AcpAdapterV2, AcpRegistryProbe, packages/provider-acp and packages/provider-acp-registry tests pass. vp run check:changed passes on the merge with main: format, lint, knip, typecheck of 25 packages, tests.

Runtime transcript, web dev server on a fresh database (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0), same driver on both sides: select the mock Droid instance, switch the mock to auth required, send "Review the README".

Not checked: before/after screenshots were taken but not uploaded, because the upload tool was unavailable on the verifying machine. No test against a real Factory Droid account. No mobile or delegated-child capture; those surfaces render the same failure.message field.

Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code) as the triage lead, with Claude Opus 5.5 step agents for the test and the fix, and GPT-6.1-Sol (Codex) and Claude Opus 5.5 reviewers, run in T3 Code.

Takeover

No code changes; evidence and verification added below. Correction to "Change" above: the sign-in message reaches session-open failures (session/new, rows W1, W3, D1) and auth-required session config writes such as the model write (P1). Mid-turn ACP prompt failures still show the agent's own text, because acpRegistryPromptFailure passes errorMessage and makeProviderFailure prefers it over the curated message. The "Not checked" note above about un-uploaded screenshots is superseded by the Evidence section.

The failed timeline item stays on both sides with its message. W2-before-narrated.mp4 · W2-after-narrated.mp4

Environment. Web: fs-32, Linux x86_64, T3 preview Chrome 156, no device emulation, DPR 2, zoom 1, font scaling 100%, CSS viewport 1440×900 or 390×900 as labelled (desktop PNGs are the whole 1440×900 viewport scaled to 1280×800; narrow PNGs 780×1800). Server and Vite run under libfaketime from the same start instant, browser Date fixed, threads created strictly in sequence, pointer parked before each still; every still has a pixel-identical same-side witness 500 ms later. Two fresh after-databases rebuild W1 1440 dark with Diff0 = 0 (determinism.json). Native: Pixel 9 emulator, Android API 36, real T3 dev client, 411.43×923.43 logical at DPR 2.625, fontScale 0.94, dark. Fixtures are local stock-ACP instances proof_droid (agentId factory-droid) and proof_generic (no agentId) on fresh T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0 databases, probed healthy, then switched to T3_ACP_REQUIRE_AUTH=1; P1 is a labelled protocol harness in the real app that rejects only the model session/set_config_option with -32000.

What else changed.

  • The internal-id wrapper text becomes the sign-in sentence in the banner and timeline item (W1, W3, D1, P1, M1) and in the list excerpts (M2).
  • The shorter message changes geometry: the narrow W1 banner goes from five lines to three and uncovers the timeline heading; D1's banner loses "Show full error" because the message now fits.
  • Native gesture-bar antialiasing differs by 1/255 in 13 (M1) and 11 (M2) pixels (native-OS-delta.json). Nothing else differs at zero threshold (diff-stats.json).
  • The sidebar "update everything" button shows on both sides of the web captures; it appears only when the provider update check reaches the network, so a rebuild without network access omits it.

Verification log
  • Mode: evidence-only takeover round 1; no code, test or review changes, so no new review rounds. Tests as reported above: failure.test.ts 13/13, AcpRegistryReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts 15/15.
  • Proof audit pass 1 derived the matrix. Pass 2 (round-1 captures) found a non-reproducible W1 rebuild (sidebar order, server-time timestamp, hover), a wrong W2 caption time, and the turn-failure overstatement; all three were fixed by the round-2 recapture and the correction above.
  • Proof audit pass 3 (round-2 captures): M1, M2, D1, P1 sufficient; W1–W3 flagged for a 683-pixel rebuild delta confined to the network-dependent update button (the rebuild ran during a VM DNS outage) and for using 1440×900 instead of the matrix's 1280×900; the capture rules call for 1440 and 390 widths, which were used.
  • CI on 941452f31c: all required checks green.
  • Not verified: iOS native client, Electron, relay/tunnel, a real Factory Droid account, and the delegated child's reported ten-minute session/new stall.
  • Claude Opus 5.5 (Claude Code) as PR lead, GPT-6.1-Sol (Codex) proof auditor and evidence capturer, run in T3 Code.

…re hides sign-in guidance

The failing test reproduces #29534: a provider session that fails to open
because the ACP agent answers -32000 "Authentication required" gets no
curated message, so the thread shows the wrapper text with the internal
provider session id instead of telling the user to sign in.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When an ACP agent rejected a session or turn with the auth_required error
(code -32000), the curated failure walk did not recognise it, so the thread
showed the wrapper "Failed to open acpRegistry provider session <id>." with
an internal id and no recovery step.

The walk now maps an AcpRequestError with code -32000, which the ACP schema
reserves for "Authentication required", to a fixed T3 message that names
how to sign in and to retry. The agent's own text stays hidden, as for the
other curated causes.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 941452f

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — ACP authentication-required failures now display explicit sign-in guidance instead of generic failure text. The change is limited to messaging and does not alter authentication behavior or expose agent-provided error text.

ACP request errors with code -32000 now return curated sign-in guidance. Tests verify the message content and its use for authentication failures.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(provider-core): ACP sign-in failures tell the user to sign in" is a conventional commit title that names the main change: the ACP auth-required failure path now returns a curated sign-in message. It matches the changed file (packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.ts) and the stated objective of the PR. It is specific and does not include a file list or vague terms.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes three files. packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.ts adds the -32000 AcpRequestError case, a curated sign-in message. packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.test.ts adds one test for that case. The orchestration-v2 AcpRegistryReplayFixtures.integration.test.ts updates the -32000 assertion from the generic provider-session-open pattern to the new sign-in message. Each change ties to the auth-required message. The change keeps the existing cause-chain behavior for other codes, because the case breaks out of the switch when code is not -32000. No unrelated file or behavior change was found in the reviewed changes.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely. It has a clear Problem section with reproduction environment and observed text, a Change section explaining the curated message and where it is consumed, and a Scope and approval section that links issue #29534 and explains that the delegated-child stall is out of scope. The Verification section lists focused test results, before/after runtime transcripts, and explicit items not checked. The template asks for a triaged issue or maintainer approval comment for scope. The description links the issue but does not include an approval comment or maintainer approval, so that part is weaker. The Verification section is strong. Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #29534 is directly linked and open, so all its coding requirements apply.

Met: direct-thread auth errors. packages/provider-core/src/server/failure.ts (head) adds a curatedCauseMessages case for _tag "AcpRequestError" with code -32000. It returns a fixed sign-in message with no agent text and no session id. The new test in failure.test.ts asserts this message and checks that the session id is absent. The PR description reports the banner and the persistent failure item showing this text. Those runtime results are author-reported and were not re-run here.

Unmet: delegated tasks. The issue requires that startup, authentication, and failure states of a delegated ACP child be surfaced to the parent and user, and that queued parent messages not appear frozen. The diff changes no delegate, orchestration, or queue code. The PR description and objectives state that the delegated-child stall and the queued-message behavior are not addressed. The PR states the sign-in message reaches a delegated child failure item, but no test or code path in the diff covers the child startup-state or parent-queue behavior.

Partly met: the issue asks that internal identifiers go to diagnostic details. The new message removes the id for the -32000 case. No diagnostic detail field is added.

Resolution

Implement the delegated-task requirements of #29534 in this PR, or remove the Fixes reference and track them in a separate issue. For the implementation: (1) surface the child's session-open and authenticate states, and the auth-required failure, to the parent thread and the user; (2) ensure queued parent messages show a visible pending or blocked state instead of appearing frozen; (3) add automated tests for the delegated child failure item and the parent queue state. Add a test that the delegated child failure item carries the sign-in message. Do not require a fix for the unconfirmed ten-minute session/new stall unless its cause is established.

Preserve curated authentication guidance for ACP prompt failures.

When acpRegistryPromptFailure receives an AcpRequestError with code -32000, it passes cause.errorMessage to makeProviderFailure. That explicit message takes precedence over curated.known, and the resulting failure is retained in the turn error item.

Keep explicit agent messages for other ACP errors, but omit them for -32000:
