fix: report MCP server import failures in doctor - #15
Conversation
Reviewer's GuideThe doctor now performs a bounded, isolated fresh import and tool-registration probe for the MCP server, reporting redacted failures as unhealthy while avoiding stateful or network operations; extensive tests cover diagnostics, package/dependency resolution, safety, and cleanup behavior. Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The doctor's server-import check and the asynchronous tool look sound. One open test-portability concern remains: the timeout test may still use a POSIX-style process liveness check that misbehaves on Windows. The change is mergeable once the owner confirms that check was replaced. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to The probe preserves Python import restrictions and returns bounded, redacted diagnostics. Callers cannot directly select dependency paths or executable code. No introduced security defect was established, but dependency ownership in deployed environments and interruption behavior remain partly unverified. +import agy_mcp
+sys.path.pop(0)
+import json
+from agy_mcp.config import SafetyConfig
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**issue (broader_impact):** When the probe starts with `sys.path[0] == ""`, it replaces the empty entry representing the current working directory and then removes it instead of restoring it. Dependencies available only from the caller's working directory are therefore invisible to the probe, causing a false MCP import failure despite being importable by the normal server process.
**Triggers:** When `agy-doctor` is run from a project that provides an MCP dependency through the current working directory.
**Suggested fix:** Save the original `sys.path[0]` value and restore it after importing the pinned `agy_mcp` package instead of unconditionally popping the entry.
```suggestion
original_path = sys.path[0] if sys.path else None
if sys.path and sys.path[0] == "":
sys.path[0] = sys.argv[1]
else:
sys.path.insert(0, sys.argv[1])
# Pin this package, then restore the caller's dependency search order.
import agy_mcp
if original_path is None:
sys.path.pop(0)
else:
sys.path[0] = original_path
+ stdout=subprocess.DEVNULL,
+ stderr=subprocess.DEVNULL,
+ )
+ if completed.returncode != 0:
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**issue (bug_risk):** The timeout cleanup only terminates and reaps the probe process itself; an import-time dependency that spawns a child process leaves that descendant running after `subprocess.run` times out. Repeated timed-out doctor checks can therefore accumulate orphaned processes and allow import-side effects to continue after the check reports failure.
**Triggers:** When an MCP dependency spawns a subprocess and the parent probe then exceeds the five-second timeout.
**Suggested fix:** Run the probe in a process group or job object and terminate the entire process tree on timeout.
Updated the branch at The doctor tool offloads blocking work through AnyIO, and adapter capability caches have an instance lock. Regressions cover status/cancel responsiveness, actual lock contention, direct-child timeout/reaping, and temporary-file cleanup. The timeout test observes its owned The command remains a fixed interpreter and constant script with argv/stdin data. Raw child environment keys, arbitrary runtime path/filter mutations, and dependency-created descendant cleanup are outside the equivalence guarantees; the existing per-loop worker capacity policy remains unchanged. This candidate passed 94 affected local tests plus 12 separate public first-import cases, Ruff, an offline build, and artifact audit. Current CI passed all five code jobs and 48 steps. Local full-suite and native Windows checks were not run; the PR description records the actual validation scope. |
Keep environment and site exclusions in the fresh server import check. Preserve normal PYTHONPATH overrides and handle no-site independently of isolated mode.
agy-doctornow imports the installedagy_mcp.serverand registers its tools in a fresh interpreter. Import failures make the report unhealthy with a bounded, redacted exception type and message. Import output is discarded; the five-second import timeout kills and reaps the direct child and removes its diagnostic directory. The check leaves server state uninitialized and requires no network access or authentication. Fixes #14.The probe preserves the entrypoint search order, effective interpreter modes, parsed startup warning options, integer conversion limit, and current bytecode cache settings. Its child-only environment copy removes stale overrides for the settings replayed on the command line, including late user-site and safe-path overrides. An already-present
PYTHONHOMEis reconstructed from the caller's base installation when environment settings are enabled, preserving tested venv and alternate-home layouts. Other variables, including freshPYTHONPATHoverrides, remain available. This does not clone raw environment keys, arbitrary latersys.pathadditions, or runtime warning filters.The MCP doctor tool runs blocking checks in an AnyIO worker so status and cancellation remain responsive during a hanging import. State and adapter selection remain on the event loop. An instance lock shares each adapter's cold capability probe while preserving cache retry and refresh behavior. Dependency-created descendants remain outside the direct-child cleanup guarantee.
Validation on this candidate: 94 affected tests passed on Linux/Python 3.12, including the seven targeted search/environment cases. Twelve separate public first-import cases passed in owned installations: eight on Python 3.12 and four HOME/layout cases on Python 3.14.6. Ruff, an offline wheel/sdist build, and the artifact audit passed. These local checks are selected regressions; local full-suite and native Windows runs were not performed.
