feat(wren): serve a project-bound agent and governed MCP through a shared context layer - #2848
Adds wren serve agent and governed wren serve mcp --service-config, using a shared Wren context loader, read-only SQL gate, policy-controlled metadata/evidence and session lifecycle. This is opt-in; ordinary query and ungoverned MCP behavior is unchanged.
The loader builds project context and dependency lineage from models, views, cubes, relationships, knowledge, saved queries and dashboards. Startup verifies the captured source and engine manifest agree. Native cube sources must use supported per-cube metadata; a root cube mirror must match its semantic definitions. Prose and nonsemantic ordering remain editable.
Every governed SQL request passes model/column restrictions and declared-default checks before execution. An active checker that cannot determine a verdict refuses execution in both agent and governed MCP modes. The extended agent gate additionally checks structural single-match FX requirements; this does not certify actual database values or all join fan-out. Declared SUM/COUNT expressions retain unknown dimensional additivity, while metric discovery stays available.
View guarantees remain trusted project-author assertions. satisfied_by_definition records that assertion; the host does not prove the view body satisfies it. Authors must keep guarantees synchronized with view changes. A caller-confirmed status scope still takes precedence and is checked separately.
Host-owned query and context-check processes have bounded deadlines and cancellation. Late results are discarded. Shared runtime cancellation remains best effort: failed control delivery does not prove provider work stopped, and runtime budgets are per component rather than a task-wide billing limit.
When a configured audit sink fails to write or flush, the service stops delivering controlled results and stays unavailable until the operator repairs the destination and restarts. Cancellation and cleanup remain available. This prevents unaudited result delivery; it does not imply an already-executed query was rolled back.
What failure does this repair?
Review fixes cover:
Per-consumer SQL proofs across aliases, CTEs and outer joins; currency/date joins, missing-rate guards, NULL behavior, rank partitions and explicit status case operations cannot borrow evidence from unrelated reads.
Snapshot/source coherence, startup cleanup, controlled invalid-configuration errors, mixed-case model lookup and denied-field redaction, including relationship conditions and knowledge metadata.
Complete paginated metadata selectors, exact decimal transport, bounded IPC writes and teardown, terminal error propagation and policy-controlled planner metadata.
Impact analysis preserves complete downstream lists. Traversal can take O(V·(V+E)) work and output can reach O(V²); this PR adds no truncation or graph-size startup cap. Managed source files, including supported regular-file symlink targets, are loaded without a per-file or aggregate memory cap. A subprocess timeout limits elapsed time, not memory. Source filesystem checks trust the project root and output parent directories; they are not a general filesystem sandbox. SQL lineage is structural analysis, not an execution-equivalent guarantee for every dialect.
How is it tested?
Validation on 4e70179ed7845cc7595505e42352a93fbe59a372, using the SHA-256-pinned context loader:
Actual runtime/compiler unit suite: 3,404 passed, 6 skipped.
Published CLI and scripted-runtime contract suites: 1,579 passed, 61 skipped.
Rust loader: 179 tests passed; formatting, Clippy and documentation checks passed. These results carry forward from c46aeae5 after verifying unchanged Rust and Cargo source identities.
Independent accumulated regression acceptance: 324 passed, 4 filesystem-specific skips; separate published-CLI Cedar checks: 5 passed. These ran on 36c1f4cb; the final commit only synchronizes one IPC test and leaves product source unchanged. Independent final IPC suite: 40 passed.
Late review fixes validate thinking types with controlled configuration errors and remove model-derived labels from hidden-mode business summaries. An existing IPC test now waits for executor thread exit within one shared deadline while retaining all cleanup assertions. Hosted CI and CodeRabbit review are being checked for the final head.
No deployment, package release or hosted-model evaluation is included. Windows runtime validation was not performed locally. Environment-specific filesystem skips and any separate CI-only jobs are reported with the final test results.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added a project context loader that prepares semantic metadata, business rules, and dependency information for agent workflows.
Added governed agent and MCP serving options, with policy-based access controls, read-only SQL execution, and bounded query results.
Added enforceable project defaults for query checks, including row exclusions, status filters, and currency conversion requirements.
Added an opt-in read-only mode for SQL queries and expanded project validation for declared defaults.
Added example agent profiles and planner workflows.
Documentation
Documented project defaults and view-column declarations.
…nto Warble's context projection
The loader reads a Wren MDL project (models, views, cubes, relationships,
knowledge rules and declared defaults) and emits the context documents,
catalog, lineage and digest a Warble profile binds to, without Warble
depending on Wren. The serve agent resolves it from WREN_CONTEXT_LOADER_BIN
or the in-repo cargo build.

… guide
The example serves one Warble profile against a synthetic Wren project
(setup script, policy presets, three profiles, README with the local and CI
gates). refine.md documents declared default rules and a view's declared
output columns.

…ared context layer
Adds `wren serve agent`, `wren serve agent-presets` and the governed
`wren serve mcp --service-config` mode. The host reads the project through the
context loader, gates every query (read-only, source-table, declared default
rules, cube-as-table, view columns), projects evidence by policy preset and
keeps sessions, audit and budgets on its side. `wren query --read-only` and the
hidden `governed-stdio` transport share the same read-only gate, and
`wren context validate` now checks declared default rules. The wren-planner skill
is bundled with the CLI.
A bound project reaches its data only through the profile its own
wren_project.yml pins; an unpinned project is refused rather than connected
through the machine-wide active profile.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds the `agent service tests` job (published Warble CLI, scripted runtime,
in-repo context loader build), watches the context loader and example paths,
and extends ruff to the serve-agent test files and example. Test files are
listed individually because the rest of tests/unit predates the format gate.

Record the abandoned id before popping the pending future in abort.
abort pops the pending future before _remember marks the id abandoned. A runtime reply that arrives between these steps reaches the ipc_order branch in _read. That branch kills the shared runtime and fails the other in-flight tasks. The abort test runs sequentially, so it cannot catch this.

70-77: ⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
query_semantics resolves the sole table against cubes without first excluding a same-named model or view. The supplied cube-table helper says the engine resolves such a name as the model or view, so successful model results may receive an unrelated cube metric proof.
The result’s semantics.metrics can falsely identify the returned model column as the declared cube measure.
This can occur when: A manifest has both a sales model with a revenue column and a sales cube with a revenue measure; query SELECT revenue FROM sales through governed stdio.

Update query_semantics so a table name matching a model or view is not resolved
as a cube; check for a same-named model or view before accepting the cube match
and return None in that case, preventing unrelated cube metrics from proving
model columns.
If _send raises, call leaves its invocation ID in self.pending. The finally block removes only self.callbacks. After the runtime exits, each later call that fails in _send adds one entry that nothing removes. Unlike abandoned, pending has no size limit.

Bound the shutdown wait for running tool callbacks.
RuntimeIPC.close ends with pool.shutdown(wait=True, cancel_futures=True). Killing Node does not stop a running callback. A query on a connector without a configured timeout can block this join, so the audit sink and engine cleanup in service.shutdown do not run.

Update RuntimeIPC.close so waiting for running tool callbacks cannot block
shutdown indefinitely; retain cancellation of queued futures and ensure close

timeout parameter; do not assume a timeout can be added to that call.
Stop following directory symlinks in the digest walk.
Stop following directory symlinks in the digest walk.
When a project has two or more directory symlinks that lead back into the covered directories, the walk expands each path until the symlink depth limit. The number of visited entries grows exponentially, and every entry is held in memory. The Python _collect in context_adapter.py has the same flaw, and load_snapshot runs it before the loader starts.

Run a real Cedar evaluator in CI for the agent policy tests.
The test-agent job sets WARBLE_SERVICE to fake_runtime.js. needs_policy_runtime then skips the Cedar-dependent tests, and the fake authorize returns true. Based on learnings: "Confirm the test actually runs in CI. Some test files are gated behind optional extras or containers and are skipped by the default jobs — a service-free test placed in one of those files never executes."

A CTE reference parses as a table node, so a view written WITH x AS (...) SELECT ... FROM x
was marked broken and every query over it refused. Only a name the enclosing scope resolves to
the CTE defined for it is exempt; any other non-model name still breaks the view.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The shadow set was collected from the whole statement, so a CTE named like a project view,
defined inside one subquery, also stopped the expansion of that view everywhere else and the
statement was refused. Each table reference now asks its own scope.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…side ON literals
A window on one alias of a self-join covered the whole model, so a figure that included the
other alias's unfiltered rows still reported a period. Coverage is now judged per alias. A date
literal in the ON of an outer join (or either side of an ANTI join) only decides which rows
match, not which are kept, so it is no longer read as a window.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Rule bodies were served verbatim, so a sentence naming a denied model.column reached every
consumer of the context. Bodies now get the sentence-level redaction descriptions already get,
line by line so the markdown structure survives. A rule left with no text stays listed with an
empty body; the file on disk is untouched.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A statement that used an unsupported function and read a model the project does not have got the
rewritable function error instead of the terminal denial the gate specifies for the unknown model.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…trict it
An exclusion filter anywhere in the statement satisfied the rule for every read, so a CTE or
subquery that never fed the outer read could mask it. Each read is now judged by the filters of
its own scope, its consumers and the sources and linked IN/EXISTS predicates they draw on. A
NOT IN counts as an exclusion only when its outer column is the flagged model's key (the same
column or the other side of a project relationship).

A limit written under OR (rn = 1 OR something else) kept several rate rows per amount and still
passed the single-match check.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e config
Plain serve mcp accepted --warble and never used it, and agent-presets let a missing
--service-config escape as a traceback instead of a controlled error.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…a host guarantee
The host gates every statement the same way and cannot enforce counts-only; the capability text
now says what the worker is briefed to do.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A name bound by WITH is not a relation, so lineage no longer links a
model that merely shares a CTE's name. Scope follows SQL: a CTE is
visible to the query that declares it and to later siblings, never to
its own body, so a CTE that reads the same-named table still links it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A cube whose base object names a view emitted an edge from a model node
that does not exist, so the graph was unresolvable and impact analysis
was unavailable for the whole project.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… skipping it
Directory listings dropped entries that failed to read, so a project
could load as a smaller one with no error or diagnostic. Every listing
now goes through one helper that propagates the entry error.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… reader
The digest skipped dot-named files but the rule and saved-query readers
did not, so an edit to one changed the catalog without changing the
digest and a running service never saw the change. One shared helper
now defines the rule for the digest and for every directory listing.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ith no statement
A view directory without sql.yml was skipped silently, although the
wren CLI accepts a statement written inline in metadata.yml, so the
catalog could lose a view the engine manifest still had. The directory
is now a view whenever metadata.yml exists, sql.yml wins over an inline
statement, and a view with no statement anywhere is a load error and a
catalog diagnostic.

Bound the IPC teardown wait for active tool callbacks.
If a tool callback blocks in work that cancellation cannot interrupt, such as an audit write to a stalled file, RuntimeIPC._read waits forever at self.pool.shutdown(wait=True). RuntimeIPC.close waits without a bound at its own pool.shutdown(wait=not internal) call. Service shutdown and the atexit handler reach that call, so the process can hang on exit.
Suggested direction

Cap the bytes read from a source file.
read_bytes_if_file reads the whole file into memory with no size limit. A very large metadata, rule, or instructions.md file can exhaust loader memory before the 60-second loader timeout stops the process. Make hard-link checks work on non-Unix builds, or fail closed.
On non-Unix builds, same_file always returns false. The output alias checks and the -o/--catalog-out identity check then never detect a hard link. A hard-linked output is written in place, which changes the shared file. If the output is a hard link to wren_project.yml, the prepared document replaces the project configuration. If it is a hard link to the other output, the prepared document replaces the catalog. The Unix build detects both cases with a device and inode comparison. Add a Windows file-identity comparison, or reject the output on non-Unix builds, so this path does not silently skip the check.

Build the prepared document and the catalog from one project read.
load() and write_catalog() each read the project. A source edit that is reverted before write_catalog() takes its digest passes the host's before/after digest check. The host then accepts a prepared document and a catalog that describe different project states.
Derive both documents and the digest from the same read. Then a transient change makes the host's final digest check fail.
Scope of the fix
The safe fix needs a shared read and a digest computed from the same bytes. The inspected code does not yet establish a localized diff for this, so none is proposed here.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The projection allows measures from different cubes to share a MetricInfo.name; a pinned metric lookup that takes only that name may select the wrong cube's additivity.
The precondition result can depend on cube order rather than the intended measure.
This can occur when: Two accepted cubes both declare revenue, with different inferred additivity, and a consumer pins metric_additive to revenue.

On Windows, same_file always returns false. A hard link to wren_project.yml therefore passes output_aliases_digest_input, and std::fs::write can overwrite the project file while returning success. Compare Windows volume and file-index metadata, or reject unsupported non-Unix identity checks.

Cube-only provenance cannot reach a successful governed query.
In core/wren/src/wren/governed_stdio.py, query_semantics runs only after engine.query(read_only=True) succeeds. Strict policy rejects cube-only table names before execution, so this branch never runs for them. The test test_semantic_proof_is_derived_at_governed_transport_boundary passes only because its bound_transport fake bypasses that policy. Decide whether cube-only reads should succeed with provenance, then either route them through the real policy or remove the branch and the test.

Remove or wire up the cube-only proof branch in query_semantics.
In governed stdio, a FROM name that exists only as a cube is rejected by engine.query(read_only=True) before query_semantics runs. The cube-only branch of query_semantics cannot return a proof in production. Only the unit tests reach it. Either remove the branch or move the call so it runs before the table check. Choose the design first. The current code gives the agent cube_not_queryable and no semantics field for this input.

Stop the whole-word fallback from matching comments and literals.
When saved SQL fails to parse, referenced_names matches model and view names anywhere in the raw text. A name in a comment or string literal creates a model:/view: → query: edge. Impact analysis then reports the query as a downstream consumer, and the severity rises to semantic. Strip comments and quoted literals before the fallback scan, or mark the impact result degraded when a parse-fallback diagnostic is present. Neither change is a one-line edit, so no diff is proposed.

Reject schema_version 1 in the native gate, or add its flat-file readers.
The native gate accepts schema_version: 1, but the native readers skip flat v1 files. A v1 project with models or views fails load_snapshot, and wren context build does not clear the error. Either reject v1 with a clear message, or read the flat layout as the Python loaders do.

Bound the in-flight runtime tool calls before submitting them to the executor.
_read() submits every tool_call frame to the executor, which has no queue limit. Frames for finished invocations are still accepted and queued. If a runtime sends frames faster than callbacks finish, queued frames can grow until the invocation deadline ends. Add an in-flight cap and reject frames above it.

Reject falsy non-mapping policy_presets values before the default is applied.
read_policy_presets replaces any falsy policy_presets value with {} before the mapping check. A policy_presets: [] setting passes validation. Expand view references in view bodies, or document the refusal.
A view that reads another view is marked broken. A governed query on the outer view then fails with unsupported_source. The MDL reference states that views can reference other views, and that the engine expands them recursively. Expand referenced views recursively in read_view_bodies and _expand_views, or document this limit in the MDL reference and the agent docs.

Match model names case-insensitively when attaching prose rules.
_rules_about compiles the model pattern without re.IGNORECASE. A rule that says Orders must exclude cancellations is not attached to read_context(["orders"]). The worker can still run SQL without reading that rule, because nothing requires it. Add the flag so capitalized mentions match.
[warning] 1145-1145: Regex pattern passed to re is built from a non-literal (variable, call, concatenation, or f-string) value. If that value is attacker-controlled it can introduce a malicious pattern with catastrophic backtracking (ReDoS). Filter cube members that match hidden base-model columns.
_cube_item drops members only when (base, name) is in self.denied. Hidden columns are not in denied, so a cube dimension or measure named like an is_hidden column on its base model is returned to the worker by read_context. _model_item and _relationship_denied already exclude hidden names. Apply the same exclusion to cube members.

Summary
Adds
wren serve agentand governedwren serve mcp --service-config, using a shared Wren context loader, read-only SQL gate, policy-controlled metadata/evidence and session lifecycle.
View
guaranteesremain trusted project-author assertions.satisfied_by_definitionrecords that assertion; the host does not prove the view body satisfies it. Authors must keep guarantees synchronized with view changes. A caller-confirmed status scope still takes precedence and is checked separately.Host-owned query and context-check processes have bounded deadlines and cancellation.
Impact analysis preserves complete downstream lists. Traversal can take
O(V·(V+E))work and output can reachO(V²); this PR adds no truncation or graph-size startup cap.
Validation on
4e70179ed7845cc7595505e42352a93fbe59a372, using the SHA-256-pinned context loader:c46aeae5after verifying unchanged Rust and Cargo source identities.36c1f4cb; the final commit only synchronizes one IPC test and leaves product source unchanged. Independent final IPC suite: 40 passed.Late review fixes validate
thinkingtypes with controlled configuration errors and remove model-derived labels from hidden-mode business summaries. An existing IPC test now waits for executor thread exit within one shared deadline while retaining all cleanup assertions. Hosted CI and CodeRabbit review are being checked for the final head.No deployment, package release or hosted-model evaluation is included. Windows runtime validation was not performed locally. Environment-specific filesystem skips and any separate CI-only jobs are reported with the final test results.
