feat(console): promote the Capgo MCP in the console and track hosted MCP usage - #4025
The hosted MCP (https://api.capgo.app/mcp) isn't mentioned anywhere in the console. Today it has about 18 external users. The local MCP is only shown during Builder onboarding, and /connect has no inbound link.
API keys page: one link in the existing "Using the Capgo CLI?" card, "Using an AI assistant? Connect it with MCP →", pointing to /mcp. The page stays focused on keys. MCP OAuth keys (MCP · Claude…) are already listed there. The link only shows when that CLI card shows (same shouldShowCliLoginGuidance rule).
New /mcp page and "AI assistant" sidebar entry: the hosted card with the URL to copy and a setup guide link, the local MCP command (npx @capgo/cli@latest mcp, for uploads, builds and doctor), and a "Generate a key" link to /connect for clients that can't sign in (Lovable API key mode, n8n, scripts).
Measurement:
Hosted MCP tool calls now emit Hosted MCP Tool Invoked to PostHog (tool_name, success, client). Before this, they only went to Cloudflare logs.
client is the OAuth client name taken from the MCP · <client> key name. A user-chosen key name is never sent; it is reported as api_key.
The event is sent in the background, with setPersonProperties: false.
Adds an mcp-connect route to the visual-diff config.
Test plan
bunx vitest run tests/mcp-remote.unit.test.ts: new tests check the event shape, failure detection (isError and JSON-RPC errors), that a user-chosen key name is never sent, and that non-tool messages are ignored.
bun run lint, bun run lint:backend and bun run typecheck pass.
Manual (UI rendering checked through the CI visual diff above; clicks not exercised by hand): open /apikeys and click the MCP link in the CLI card to reach /mcp. On /mcp, copy the hosted URL and the local command, check the toasts, and check that "Generate a key" opens /connect. The sidebar shows "AI assistant".
Screenshots
Captured by the Visual diff CI run on the seeded stack (1280px, light).
API keys page (before / after): the MCP link sits in the CLI card.
New /mcp page (after only, it's a new page):
Sidebar (collapsed, before / after): new "AI assistant" entry.
Checklist
My code follows the code style of this project and passes bun run lint:backend && bun run lint.
…MCP usage
- New "Connect your AI assistant" card (hosted MCP URL to copy, setup guide)
on the API keys page, linking to a new /mcp page.
- New /mcp page, reachable from a new "AI assistants" sidebar entry: hosted
MCP, local MCP command, and a link to /connect for clients without OAuth.
- Hosted MCP tool calls now emit a "Hosted MCP Tool Invoked" PostHog event
(tool, success, OAuth client name; never a user-chosen key name).
- Copy actions emit console-mcp events so we can measure the new entry points.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The change adds an MCP setup page with hosted and local connection options, links to it from console navigation and CLI guidance, and adds analytics for hosted MCP tool calls.
Adds a card with the hosted MCP URL, a setup-guide link, and a copy action. Copy results use localized toasts, and successful copies send a tracking event.
Adds the /mcp page with local command copying, setup guidance, and an API-key link. Adds navigation and CLI guidance links, route mappings, and an authenticated visual-diff route.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 16f0d
The MCP additions have bounded issues: app-only administrators encounter a key-generation dead end, notifications inflate failed-call analytics, and specially prefixed key names can enter analytics. The visual capture also tolerates a missing MCP card. Merge with explicit owner awareness or address these localized issues first.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the main required parts of the template. It has a Summary that explains the hosted MCP promotion, the API keys link, the new /mcp page and sidebar entry, and the PostHog measurement. It has a Test plan with a unit test command, lint and typecheck results, and manual steps for the /apikeys to /mcp flow. It has a Screenshots section with three images. The Checklist is partly ticked. Two items are still open: the documentation update and the manual test steps. The template also says the E2E coverage box applies to complex setups, and it is unchecked. The description does not state the reason for leaving the E2E coverage and documentation boxes open, though the Summary and Test plan are otherwise complete.

Every push replaces the bundle. The channel is deleted when the PR closes; after that, leave the preview from the Capgo app to return to your normal bundle.
Keep the API keys page focused on keys: the MCP card took too much room,
so the CLI login card now links to the dedicated /mcp page instead.
Rename the sidebar entry to the singular "AI assistant".

Add a route-level test for the hosted tool tracking call.
The hostedMcpToolEvent tests call the helper directly. They do not exercise the backgroundTask(c, trackPosthogEvent(c, event)) call in supabase/functions/_backend/mcp/index.ts. Removing that call would leave the tests passing, and no test checks that a hosted tools/call schedules or delivers Hosted MCP Tool Invoked.
Add a route test that sends a tools/call request through the worker. Mock backgroundTask and trackPosthogEvent, as tests/onboarding-progress-endpoint.unit.test.ts already does. Stub the API key lookup and the IP rate limit check that run before the loop. Then assert that trackPosthogEvent receives an event named Hosted MCP Tool Invoked.

Require the MCP card in the after capture.
The mcp-connectprepare swallows the card wait in both phases. The after capture then proceeds to a screenshot without the card. Visual diff only reports changed routes and does not fail on them, so a broken head page can go unflagged. Keep the .catch only for the before phase, as the neighboring routes do.

Let app-only admins reach a key flow that accepts them.
The "Generate a key" CTA opens /connect, which lists only organizations where the caller has an admin role. An app administrator without an organization admin role sees no organization to select, so Generate stays disabled. The API Keys page accepts these users for app-scoped keys. Point this CTA to the API Keys page, or let /connect list organizations where the caller administers apps.

Skip the hosted usage event for JSON-RPC notifications.
A tools/call message without an id is a notification. handleJsonRpcMessage returns null for it and runs no tool. hostedMcpToolEvent still builds a Hosted MCP Tool Invoked event with success: false, and trackPosthogEvent sends it. Gate the event on the presence of id, as handleJsonRpcMessage does.

Do not derive the OAuth client from the API key name prefix.
Any key whose name starts with MCP · sends the rest of that name as the client tag. Users can set that name on ordinary keys, so typed text reaches PostHog. Identify the client from the MCP OAuth request linked to the key, or send api_key when no link exists.
As per path instructions: none applied.
