Description

Multimodal content hashing first builds the full serialized byte string for each item and then hashes it, so every large image, audio clip, video and tensor is copied once more just to compute its hash. This change streams the same serialized chunks into the hasher instead. The bytes the hasher sees, the resulting hashes, cache keys and routing IDs are unchanged, and serialize_item still returns the same bytes.

Built-in hashers receive contiguous payloads as buffer views without a copy. Custom hashers still receive bytes through ContentHasher.update, converted in one place, including NumPy and bytes subclasses without calling an overridden __bytes__. No API, config or dependency changes.

Performance of apply_mm_hashes on CPU (default BLAKE3, one Grace CPU thread, median of 15 interleaved main/PR pairs; memory is the traced peak allocation above the pre-call baseline):

Input Time main → PR (ms) Time Peak memory main → PR Memory
1344×1344 RGB image 19.30 → 17.26 −10.6% 21.7 MB → 14.5 MB −33.3%
3840×2160 RGB screenshot 100.85 → 87.22 −13.5% 99.5 MB → 66.4 MB −33.3%
32-frame 448×448 video 44.65 → 41.31 −7.5% 1.2 MB → 4 KB −99.6%
30 s 16 kHz float32 audio 4.81 → 4.53 −5.8% 3.8 MB → 4 KB −99.9%
64 MiB float32 tensor 185.78 → 155.43 −16.3% 134.2 MB → 4 KB −99.997%

With SHA-256 the time reduction is 14–36% on the same inputs. These are hashing-only numbers from a shared node; end-to-end serving impact is not measured.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_multimodal_hashing.py (new, 3,947 cases): scalars, bytes subclasses, empty/strided/Fortran/object arrays, tensors, nested metadata, 18 PIL modes, audio, video, all UUID variants and several hash functions, including a bytes-only custom hasher. F mode images have their own conversion-aware test.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_video_data_hashing.py: 6 passed.
  • Bit-exactness against main: running main's hashing code and this change in the same process, all 11,043 final hashes, 1,227 hasher update streams and 6,135 routing IDs match.
  • The new test file is already covered by the existing unittest/inputs entry in l0_cpu.yml.

Dev Engineer Review

The hashing path now streams serialized chunks to the hasher instead of building a complete serialized byte string. serialize_item retains its byte output, and BaseModalityData.update_hash remains unchanged. Recognized buffer-capable hashers receive payload views; other hashers receive bytes. Current-head test results and performance measurements are not available.

QA Engineer Review

test_multimodal_hashing.py adds tests for serialization equivalence, streamed hash equivalence, pinned digests, error parity, array-buffer handling, and UUID framing. It covers scalar values, arrays, tensors, images, nested values, audio, video, and multiple hashers. test_video_data_hashing.py updates spy checks to observe _hash_serialized_item. Both test files are covered by the unittest/inputs entry in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the changed hashing behavior. Test execution results are not available.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal.py: Non-BaseModalityData values now use _hash_serialized_item. Verify that content-hash identity remains stable.
  • tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal_data.py: Serialization streams chunks while serialize_item retains its bytes result. Verify chunk ordering and the bytes fallback for custom hashers.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_multimodal_hashing.py: Tests serialization and hash equivalence across supported values, hashers, and UUID cases. The unittest/inputs directory is listed in the l0_cpu.yml CI list.
  • tests/unittest/inputs/test_video_data_hashing.py: Tests video source-anchor and frame-fallback hashing with updated streaming-helper spies. The unittest/inputs directory is listed in the l0_cpu.yml CI list.

Walkthrough

Multimodal serialization now emits encoded chunks while preserving the output of serialize_item. Audio, video, and other multimodal hash paths stream those chunks to hashers. Regression tests compare serialization and hashes with a frozen reference.

Changes

Multimodal serialization and hashing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Streaming serialization implementation
tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal_data.py
Serialization emits canonical chunks, and serialize_item joins them to preserve its byte output. Array payloads use buffer views where possible; object-dtype arrays use copied bytes.
Streamed hashing integration and validation
tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal.py, tensorrt_llm/inputs/multimodal_data.py, tests/unittest/inputs/test_multimodal_hashing.py, tests/unittest/inputs/test_video_data_hashing.py
Multimodal, audio, and video hash paths stream encoded chunks to hashers. Tests compare serialization and reference hashes across values, modalities, UUIDs, and hasher types. They also check buffer handling and pinned BLAKE3 digests.

Problem

The content-hashing path materializes serialize_item before updating the
digest. Source inspection shows payload.tobytes, length-prefix concatenation
and container joins copying large payloads. Audio serializes the entire
sample tuple; video fallback serializes each frame separately. Peak tracked
allocation reaches 134221589 B for a 64-MiB tensor. No CPU profiler
attribution was collected; the allocation peaks and per-call timings below
are direct measurements.

Solution

Reuse one serializer that emits ordered chunks. serialize_item joins them
when bytes are explicitly requested; content hashing consumes them
incrementally. Known buffer-capable builtins receive contiguous payload
views. Unknown hashers receive exact bytes at one boundary, including bytes
subclasses without invoking their __bytes__ override. Object arrays retain
tobytes. PIL RGBA conversion, tensor CPU/contiguous normalization, sorted
metadata, UUID wrappers, scheme tags and source anchors keep their current
semantics. Inputs must remain stable during hashing, and incremental digest
updates must equal concatenation.

Performance

CPU shared-node screening only: actual main b223f2c versus this change;
default BLAKE3, ARM Grace Neoverse-V2, one pinned CPU thread, concurrency 1,
TP not applicable, CUDA hidden. Python 3.12.3, NumPy 2.1.0, Pillow 13.0.0,
blake3 1.0.11, Torch 2.14.0a0. Preallocated CPU inputs; 3 warmups/arm and 15
interleaved AB/BA pairs. Times below are median ns/call; reduction is main
minus candidate. Tracemalloc peak extra bytes are median of 5 separate
single-call fork runs/arm. Image inputs are RGB, video is 32 HWC uint8
448x448 tensor frames without a source anchor, audio is 480000 float32
samples at 16 kHz, and the tensor is contiguous float32 [4096,4096].

1344 RGB: 19295501 -> 17258572 ns/call;
  reduction 2036929 ns (10.556497081884528%).
  Peak 21680128 -> 14468866 B;
  reduction 7211262 B (33.26208221648876%).

4K RGB: 100853505 -> 87221785 ns/call;
  reduction 13631720 ns (13.516357215349135%).
  Peak 99536896 -> 66425454 B;
  reduction 33111442 B (33.265495841863505%).

32-frame video: 44652029 -> 41311739 ns/call;
  reduction 3340290 ns (7.480712690570008%).
  Peak 1208570 -> 4424 B;
  reduction 1204146 B (99.63394755785764%).

30-second audio: 4807587 -> 4529315 ns/call;
  reduction 278272 ns (5.788184384390756%).
  Peak 3844399 -> 4040 B;
  reduction 3840359 B (99.8949120525731%).

64-MiB tensor: 185778776 -> 155428997 ns/call;
  reduction 30349779 ns (16.336515749247912%).
  Peak 134221589 -> 4104 B;
  reduction 134217485 B (99.99694236968094%).

No median timing regression appeared in the five BLAKE3 cells or the five
additional SHA-256 cells. Shared-node timing varied; these are module
results, not an isolated-node confidence claim. Native PIL/Torch allocations
are not fully traced. Auxiliary RSS growth increased by 131072 B for video
and 393216 B for audio with BLAKE3; inherited allocator pages make that
metric incomplete. End-to-end latency, throughput, CUDA hashing and total
native peak memory are unmeasured.

Validation

Actual main and candidate source execute in the same process. 383
serialization byte comparisons, 1227 exact update streams, 11043 final
digests across nine factories and 6135 routing int32 comparisons match.
Cases include 25 NumPy dtypes, non-contiguous arrays, 18 PIL modes,
audio/video, metadata and all UUID variants. Inherited unsupported errors,
including BF16 tensors, also match. Only unused import dependencies are
stubbed; no native inference build, CUDA or official CI qualification is
claimed.

Focused input tests: 3947 hashing cases and 6 video cases pass. 15 existing
llmapi hash/serialization function bodies also pass unchanged for each
source version via an isolated CPU harness; the full GPU-dependent module
was not collected. All 18 applicable configured pre-commit hooks pass. Input
tests use the existing CPU directory registration; no test-list files
changed.

Reproduce repository tests with pytest on:

tests/unittest/inputs/test_multimodal_hashing.py
tests/unittest/inputs/test_video_data_hashing.py

For the microbenchmark, allocate the described inputs once; time one
apply_mm_hashes call per sample using perf_counter_ns with tracing disabled,
then measure peaks in separate tracemalloc calls. Assert every digest
against the actual main source in-process. Finite tests and the structural
byte-stream proof assume stable payloads and ordinary incremental hash
semantics. Object-array pointer bytes retain their pre-existing cross-
process limitation.

Test coverage summary (no actionable defects found).

  • File: tests/unittest/inputs/test_multimodal_hashing.py is new.
  • Tests:
    • test_serialize_item_matches_reference compares serialize_item with the frozen reference serializer.
    • test_streamed_hash_matches_reference compares apply_mm_hashes digests with the frozen reference. It runs 5 hasher types, 3 UUID modes, and scalar, array, tensor, image, nested, audio, and video inputs.
    • test_float_image_hash_matches_reference handles F images. It checks the error path when Pillow cannot convert F to RGBA, and the identity path otherwise.
    • test_array_payload_buffer_contract checks that recognized hashers receive their own update callback and that the bytes-only hasher still gets bytes.
    • test_streamed_hash_pinned_digests pins four digests to frozen reference content.
  • Execution: The module carries pytest.mark.cpu_only. Per the PR description, the unittest/inputs entry in l0_cpu.yml already covers this directory, so no new list entry is needed.
  • Checked and ruled out: The Image.fromarray(pixels, "RGB") call passes a mode that matches the uint8 data type. Pillow 12 restored that usage, so it does not fail on Pillow 13.
  • Verdict: sufficient.

#20682 adds is_sampled to meta in VideoData.update_hash, directly above the serialize_item(meta) line this PR rewrites. It also edits test_video_data_hashing.py. Coordinate the landing order with its author. Once both are in, extend the frozen _reference_content with is_sampled.

The UUID axis triples 1,210 cases to 3,630 here, and multiplies test_float_image_hash_matches_reference the same way. Yet the UUID framing in apply_mm_hashes is untouched by this PR. Keep one UUID in the full cross product and cover the other UUID variants on a few items only.

Thanks for flagging the overlap with #20682.

I'm the author of #20682 and happy to coordinate the landing order.

I have no strong preference on which PR lands first. If #18637 lands first, I can rebase #20682 and reconcile the overlapping VideoData.update_hash and test changes.

Please let me know if you'd prefer a different order.

Problem

The new hashing test file had no type annotations, which CODING_GUIDELINES
Static Typing 4 asks for. The UUID axis also tripled the full item x hasher
matrix (1,210 to 3,630 cases, and 25 to 75 float-image cases), although this
change does not touch the UUID framing in apply_mm_hashes.

Solution

Annotate every helper, test and hasher method in the file. Run the full item
x hasher matrix and the float-image test without a UUID only. Cover the
empty and the long Unicode UUID in a separate test on four items (strided
array, PIL image, audio, video frames) across all five hashers.

Performance

Tests only. The file now has 1,517 cases instead of 3,947.

Validation

CPU container on ARM Grace, CUDA hidden: test_multimodal_hashing.py
1,517 passed. Ruff 0.9.4 check and format pass. The two pytest-mock tests in
test_video_data_hashing.py were not run (plugin not in the runner); that
file is unchanged here.
