[None][feat] Add Heun sampler to VisualGen, enabled for MiniMax-H3 - #21537
The change adds shared Heun math and a MiniMax-H3 scheduler that reuses the existing denoising loop. MiniMax-H3 accepts euler and heun through extra_params["sampler"]; Euler remains the default. Heun uses fresh video and audio schedulers per request, and cache acceleration is rejected for Heun. Other pipelines retain their existing sampler contract.
The final Heun step keeps its Euler result because its destination sigma is zero. The scheduler tracks proposal and correction calls across repeated timesteps, resets state on set_timesteps, and rejects calls past the schedule. No test execution results or current review findings were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
The change adds scheduler and parameter-contract unit tests, updates an existing workflow-schema test, and expands Diffusers-reference integration coverage for T2VA, FL2VA, Ref2VA, and blockwise FP8 T2VA. The B200 CI list includes the new scheduler unit test and Heun integration selectors. No manual-QA list entry was found for these Heun tests. Coverage is sufficient based on the described test cases and CI registration; execution results are not available.
Per-File QA Perspective

Description
VisualGen pipelines each run one fixed sampler. This PR adds per-request sampler selection to BasePipeline through a shared extra_params["sampler"] key, adds Heun's second-order sampler,
and enables both for MiniMax-H3 (T2VA, FL2VA and Ref2VA), e.g. VisualGenParams(extra_params={"sampler": "heun"}). Euler stays the default, so existing requests
are unchanged. Pipelines that don't opt in still reject the key.
Heun is implemented as MiniMaxH3HeunScheduler, a subclass of Diffusers' MiniMaxH3Scheduler
whose timesteps list Heun's evaluation order, so it runs through the existing denoise loop with
no changes. The model-agnostic Heun math lives in _torch/visual_gen/samplers.py for reuse by
other pipelines. Heun evaluates the transformer 2S − 1 times for S steps: 53 versus Euler's 27 at num_inference_steps=28. The last step lands on sigma = 0 and keeps its Euler result, as in
k-diffusion and Diffusers. Heun with cache acceleration enabled is rejected.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_heun_scheduler.py: 22 CPU tests covering the
2S − 1 schedule, bit-exact Euler proposals, parity with an independent k-diffusion-style Heun,
second-order convergence on a closed-form flow, callers that update latents in place, and the sampler parameter contract.
tests/integration/defs/examples/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_e2e.py::test_minimax_h3_diffusers_lpips_and_audio_reference:
adds Heun cases that compare TRT-LLM against Diffusers running the same Heun scheduler, and every
case now checks the transformer evaluation count. The cases are listed in l0_b200.yml, with the
FP8 case in post-merge.
Results on 1× B200 (128×128, 124 frames, 28 steps, seed 0). All existing Euler cases also pass.

Add a per-request sampler choice to VisualGen pipelines and Heun's
second-order method, enabled first for MiniMax-H3.
- BasePipeline.supported_samplers / sampler_param_specs(): a shared
extra_params["sampler"] entry (Literal choices, first is the default).
Pipelines without a choice are unchanged and reject the key.
- _torch/visual_gen/samplers.py: model-agnostic Heun math (evaluation
order, derivative, trapezoidal update).
- MiniMaxH3HeunScheduler: subclasses diffusers' MiniMaxH3Scheduler and
exposes Heun's 2S-1 evaluations through timesteps, so the existing
denoise loop and per-evaluation conditioning plan run it unchanged.
The first evaluation of each step is the parent's Euler step; the step
ending at sigma=0 keeps its Euler result.
- MiniMaxH3Pipeline accepts sampler "euler" (default, unchanged output)
or "heun"; Heun uses per-request scheduler instances.
Tests:
- test_minimax_h3_heun_scheduler.py: evaluation count, bit-exact Euler
proposals, parity with an independent Heun reference, second-order
convergence against the closed-form Gaussian flow, in-place callers,
state reset, and the sampler extra_params contract.
- test_minimax_h3_e2e.py: T2VA Heun vs Diffusers' ModularPipeline running
the same Heun scheduler (LPIPS / audio log-STFT gates), plus the
evaluation count (53 for 28 steps).

Fold the T2VA-only Heun reference test into the parametrized Diffusers
reference test as a sampler dimension, so Heun is gated on every task:
t2va-heun, fl2va-heun and ref2va-heun. Euler cases keep their ids.
Every case now also checks the transformer evaluation count: 27 for
Euler and 53 for Heun at 28 grid points.

Add t2va-fp8-blockwise-heun to the Diffusers reference test, and to the
post-merge B200 list next to its Euler counterpart.

Add a test for the Heun cache-acceleration rejection.
_request_schedulers("heun") now raises ValueError when cache_accelerator.is_enabled() is true. The PR objectives list this as a contract: "Heun with cache acceleration is rejected."
test_minimax_h3_request_schedulers covers only the Euler, Heun and unsupported-name paths. If someone removes or inverts this guard, Heun would run with cached steps that assume one transformer evaluation per step. No unit test would catch it.
Add this case to tests/unittest/_torch/visual_gen/test_minimax_h3_heun_scheduler.py:
deftest_minimax_h3_heun_rejects_cache_acceleration():
pipeline=_bare_pipeline()
pipeline.cache_accelerator=SimpleNamespace(is_enabled=lambda: True)
withpytest.raises(ValueError, match="does not support cache acceleration"):
pipeline._request_schedulers("heun")
# Euler is unaffected.assertpipeline._request_schedulers("euler")[0] ispipeline.scheduler
As per path instructions: "A new or changed validation rule, error path, fallback, retry, configuration option... with no meaningful test."

Second-order convergence against the closed-form Gaussian solution.
State handling: in-place latent writes, and state reset plus a past-the-end ValueError.
Parameter contract: the sampler Literal spec, rejection of the key on pipelines without a sampler choice, _request_schedulers, and infer forwarding.
Test list: the file is registered in l0_b200.yml. Because it needs no GPU, you could place it in l0_cpu.yml instead. That is optional.
Gap: the cache-acceleration rejection has no test (see the comment on pipeline_minimax_h3.py).
Verdict: sufficient, with that one follow-up.
