Description

Skip Softmax Attention only changes the attention kernel. It runs the dense TrtllmAttention backend and metadata over the dense KV cache layout, but get_sparse_attn_kv_cache_manager always returned the V1 KVCacheManager for it. Because use_kv_cache_manager_v2 defaults to True, a Skip Softmax model:

  • ran on V1 even when V2 was requested (no warning), and
  • had its seat pool sized for V2: resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2 (used by ModelEngine for the overlap headroom) predicted V2 while the executor held V1.

This PR makes Skip Softmax follow the dense KV cache manager selection:

  • sparse/registry.py: skip_softmax returns KVCacheManagerV2 when V2 is requested and KVCacheManager otherwise. Hybrid models with zero Mamba layers also select their manager through the registry. Hybrid Mamba / linear-attention models keep their hybrid managers (V1: CppMambaHybridCacheManager, V2: the model's MambaHybridCacheManagerV2 subclass).
  • pyexecutor/_util.py: _validate_or_fallback_kv_cache_manager_v2 applies the dense V2 rules to Skip Softmax: beam search stays on V2, and a V2-incompatible feature (SleepConfig) falls back to V1 with the existing warning. Sparse algorithms that own a cache manager (DSA, DeepSeek-V4, ...) still refuse the fallback. Without this, the default config with max_beam_width > 1 or a sleep config would start raising NotImplementedError once Skip Softmax selected V2.
  • Docs: features/kvcache.md and the sparse attention development guide note that Skip Softmax follows use_kv_cache_manager_v2 like a dense model and supports V2 beam search.

No kernel or metadata change is needed. The Skip Softmax thresholds still reach the FMHA through prepare_sparse_runtime_params, which does not depend on the KV cache manager. Warmup and KV budget estimation are driven by the selected manager class, so they now use the V2 cost model.

Test Coverage

New unit tests:

  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_seq_slot_sizing.py
    • test_skip_softmax_selects_the_dense_manager_resolved_v2_predicts: full creator selection (V1/V2 x beam 1/4 x sleep). Checks that the selected manager matches resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2.
    • test_sparse_kv_cache_manager_v2_does_not_fall_back: DSA still raises for beam > 1 / sleep.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_mamba_cache_manager.py::test_skip_softmax_hybrid_follows_the_dense_manager_routing: hybrid with and without Mamba layers, V1 and V2.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/test_sparse_attention.py::test_skip_softmax_uses_the_dense_kv_cache_manager: registry V1/V2.

Against the pre-change source, the V2 cases of these tests fail (4 failed, 10 passed).

Local validation on B200 (SM100):

  • Related unit test files (test_seq_slot_sizing.py, test_sparse_attention.py, test_kv_cache_estimation.py, test_mla_workspace_reserve.py, test_kv_cache_budget_split.py, test_qsa_runtime_wiring.py, test_glm5_next_contracts.py, test_mamba_cache_manager.py): 866 passed, 5 skipped. The skips are GLM5-next tests that need checkpoint assets.
  • accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py::TestQwen3_30B_A3B_Instruct_2507::test_skip_softmax_attention[target_sparsity_0.9-fp8kv=True] (in l0_b200), which now runs on KVCacheManagerV2 by default: LongBench V1 38.734 (reference 38.632, threshold 36.944). Passed.
  • V1 vs V2 greedy output comparison with Skip Softmax (8 synthetic retrieval prompts of about 12K tokens, 48 output tokens each):
    • Qwen3-30B-A3B-Instruct-2507: KVCacheManager vs KVCacheManagerV2, 8/8 outputs token-identical. Skip Softmax vs dense on V2: 0/8 identical, so the kernel is active.
    • Qwen3-30B-A3B-Instruct-2507, beam width 2: 8/8 beams token-identical between V1 and V2.
    • Nemotron-H-8B (hybrid Mamba): CppMambaHybridCacheManager vs NemotronHybridCacheManager, 8/8 token-identical.

The GPU runs above used the first commit (6119c44ec6). The second commit only moves the Skip Softmax check into the V2 validator and selects the same managers for these models; the unit tests above were re-run on it (866 passed, 5 skipped).

The existing Skip Softmax CI accuracy tests (l0_b200, l0_dgx_b200, l0_dgx_h200) use the default use_kv_cache_manager_v2=True, so they now cover the V2 path.

Dev Engineer Review

Skip Softmax now follows dense KV cache manager selection. It uses KVCacheManagerV2 when use_kv_cache_manager_v2 is enabled and KVCacheManager otherwise. Hybrid Mamba and linear-attention manager routing remains separate.

Skip Softmax follows dense V2 compatibility handling. Beam search uses V2, while SleepConfig triggers the existing V1 fallback with a warning. Other sparse algorithms retain their existing fallback restrictions. The documentation describes these behaviors. The supplied review summary reports no required kernel or metadata changes.

The PR author reports 866 passing tests and 5 skipped tests in the listed related unit-test files. The skips require GLM5-next checkpoint assets. The author also reports passing LongBench V1 accuracy, token-identical V1/V2 outputs in the specified comparisons, and 4 failures and 10 passes when the new tests ran against pre-change source. These are reported results, not independently verified here.

QA Engineer Review

Three unit test files were modified. They add coverage for Skip Softmax manager selection, hybrid Mamba routing, sleep fallback, beam-width handling, and rejection of V2 fallback for dsa. The sequence-slot sizing file is listed in test-db/l0_a10.yml. The hybrid-cache test function is listed in test-db/l0_b200.yml. No matching integration-list entry was found for the sparse-attention unit test. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described manager-selection and compatibility paths.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • docs/source/developer-guide/sparse-attention-development-guide.md — Documents that kernel-level sparse algorithms retain the dense KV-cache layout and use the manager selected by use_kv_cache_manager_v2.
  • docs/source/features/kvcache.md — Documents Skip Softmax routing and clarifies the V2 beam-search behavior for Skip Softmax.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/attention/backends/sparse/registry.py — Changes Skip Softmax manager selection to honor use_kv_cache_manager_v2.
  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py — Routes Skip Softmax through dense-manager compatibility handling. Verify sleep fallback and preservation of sparse-algorithm restrictions.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/attention/sparse/test_sparse_attention.py — Adds parameterized coverage for Skip Softmax registry selection. No matching integration-list entry was found.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_mamba_cache_manager.py — Adds Skip Softmax routing coverage for models with and without a Mamba layer. The separate test_v2_hybrid_retains_configured_number_of_conversation_turns test is listed in test-db/l0_b200.yml.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_seq_slot_sizing.py — Adds coverage for manager selection, sleep fallback, beam widths, and dsa rejection. The file is listed in test-db/l0_a10.yml.

Skip Softmax changes only the attention kernel and keeps the dense KV
cache layout, but the sparse registry always returned the V1
KVCacheManager for it. With the default use_kv_cache_manager_v2=True,
Skip Softmax models therefore ran on V1 while the seat pool was sized
for the V2 manager that resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2 predicted.

Route Skip Softmax through the dense KV cache manager selection
(including variable per-layer KV geometry) and apply the dense V2
rules in the V2 validator: beam search stays on V2, and only a
V2-incompatible feature such as SleepConfig falls back to V1 with a
warning. Sparse algorithms that own a cache manager keep refusing the
fallback. Hybrid Mamba / linear-attention models keep their hybrid
managers.

Walkthrough

Skip Softmax Attention now follows dense KV-cache manager selection. It uses V2 when configured, subject to sleep and Mamba-hybrid routing. Other sparse algorithms retain sparse-specific routing and V2 compatibility checks. Documentation and tests describe these rules.

Nitpick Add a Skip Softmax V2 beam-search test with divergent beam parents.

1096-1096: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add a Skip Softmax V2 beam-search test with divergent beam parents.

The change in tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py now allows max_beam_width > 1 for Skip Softmax on V2. The added tests cover manager selection, hybrid routing, and the compatibility predicate. None runs a Skip Softmax generation request with two beams through per-beam KV lookup and attention. A defect in that path can pass the current tests and still produce wrong beam continuations.

Add a two-beam Skip Softmax generation case in which the beams have different parents. Place it next to test_skip_softmax_attention in tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py. Set the sampling to two beams, and compare the V2 continuations against the same Skip Softmax configuration on V1. The existing accuracy case does not set beam search, so it cannot cover this path on its own.

Align seat-pool sizing with variable-geometry selection.

_non_hybrid_kv_cache_manager_cls selects KVCacheManagerV2 for dense, non-hybrid variable geometry even when V2 is disabled. resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2 still predicts V1, so ModelEngine can omit overlap headroom and size the seat pool for one batch instead of two. The proposed model_config= call also requires adding that keyword to the predicate signature.

Keep the hybrid, dedicated-sparse-manager, and SleepConfig restrictions. Add a no-sleep Skip Softmax case with differing kv_cache_layer_specs, use_v2=False, and assert both V2 selection and resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2(...) is True.

Update _non_hybrid_kv_cache_manager_cls and resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2 so
dense, non-hybrid variable geometry selects and predicts V2 consistently when
use_v2 is false, while preserving the hybrid, dedicated-sparse-manager, and
SleepConfig restrictions. Pass the model configuration into the predicate from
ModelEngine using a supported signature, so seat-pool sizing includes overlap
headroom when V2 is selected. Add a no-sleep Skip Softmax test with differing
kv_cache_layer_specs and use_v2=false that asserts both V2 selection and a true
predicate result.

The sparse registry already returns the dense manager that
use_kv_cache_manager_v2 selects for Skip Softmax, so
get_kv_cache_manager_cls needs no special case. Drop the module-level
helper and keep the Skip Softmax distinction as a local check in the
V2 validator, where beam search and SleepConfig must follow the dense
V2 rules.

Add a runtime test for Skip Softmax with beam search on V2.

The new condition in KvCacheCreator._validate_or_fallback_kv_cache_manager_v2 allows max_beam_width > 1 for Skip Softmax on V2. The added tests only check which cache manager class is selected. The existing Skip Softmax accuracy tests use greedy LongBench evaluation with default beam settings. No repository test generates tokens with beam width above 1 for Skip Softmax on V2. A decoding error that affects beams, such as incorrect KV lookup for divergent beam parents, would pass the current tests.

Add a focused test that runs one Skip Softmax request with beam width 2 on V1 and on V2. Use prompts whose beams diverge early. Assert that the generated tokens match between the two managers. The test can live with the existing Skip Softmax accuracy tests in tests/integration/defs/accuracy/test_llm_api_pytorch.py, or in an integration test that needs a GPU.

CI Report

⚠️ Multi-GPU Label Required:
Multi-GPU tests require the ci: full pre-merge approved label on this PR. Either:

  • Wait for the PR to be fully approved — the label is added automatically once approval is complete. Having unresolved open comments is fine, or
  • If needed, ask a member of NVIDIA/trt-llm-ci-approvers to add the label manually.
Then re-trigger CI with the same bot command (no rebase needed).

⚠️ Action Required:

  • Please check the failed tests and fix your PR
  • If you cannot view the failures, ask the CI triggerer to share details
  • Once fixed, request an NVIDIA team member to trigger CI again

Approving — the comments below are optional touch-ups, not blockers.

The tests check the right thing: test_skip_softmax_selects_the_dense_manager_resolved_v2_predicts runs the real creator selection and asserts it agrees with resolved_kv_cache_manager_is_v2, which is the invariant that was actually broken.

Two whole-PR points:

  • Ticket: this is a [feat] that changes the default runtime manager for every Skip Softmax deployment (V1 → V2). Please put a JIRA in the title instead of [None] so the behavior change can be traced.
  • Repeated literal: "skip_softmax uses the dense KV cache" is now encoded as algorithm not in (None, "skip_softmax") at [tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/_util.py:289](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/21553/files#diff-5f0e349b724e8ad501e0ae859c992801e631217a8d52acfa40e24a8fe95bbbcbR289), :1069, :1399, plus the registry branch. The next kernel-only algorithm will need all four updated. Consider one helper (e.g. _uses_dense_kv_cache(sparse_attention_config)) or a property on the sparse config, and use it at each site.

return KVCacheManager
# Skip Softmax changes only the attention kernel; the KV cache keeps
# the dense layout and follows the dense manager selection.
return KVCacheManagerV2 if use_kv_cache_manager_v2 else KVCacheManager

This copies only part of the dense selection. _non_hybrid_kv_cache_manager_cls ([_util.py:130](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/21553/files#diff-5f0e349b724e8ad501e0ae859c992801e631217a8d52acfa40e24a8fe95bbbcbR130)) also forces V2 when _has_variable_kv_cache_geometry(model_config) is true, because V1's unified pool can't hold heterogeneous per-layer head_dim/kv_heads. With this branch, a variable-geometry model with Skip Softmax and use_kv_cache_manager_v2=False still gets KVCacheManager, while the same model without Skip Softmax gets V2. The registry only receives the sparse config, so it can't apply that rule.

Suggest handling skip_softmax in get_kv_cache_manager_cls before the registry call (both at [_util.py:279](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/21553/files#diff-5f0e349b724e8ad501e0ae859c992801e631217a8d52acfa40e24a8fe95bbbcbR279) and in the non-hybrid sparse path near [_util.py:479](https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/21553/files#diff-5f0e349b724e8ad501e0ae859c992801e631217a8d52acfa40e24a8fe95bbbcbR479)) by delegating to _non_hybrid_kv_cache_manager_cls(model_config, kv_cache_config). That keeps "follows the dense selection" true by construction. A test case with mixed head_dim layers and use_v2=False would pin it.
