[https://nvbugs/7043301][test] Turn off the HF weight cache in the GLM-5.2 SM103 TEP4 GSM8K test - #21692
accuracy/modeling_v2/test_glm_moe_dsa.py::TestModelingV2Glm52Nvfp4Sm103Tep4::test_gsm8k_identity_vs_mtp1_and_acceptance (4x B300, TIMEOUT (45) in l0_dgx_b300.yml) loads the same checkpoint twice, one LLM per GSM8K leg, on one reused MPI worker pool. Test session reuse turns on the raw HF weight cache (TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE=1) for its pools, so:
both loads take the native SafeTensors path instead of rank-striped read-ahead;
the second load is a cache hit.
The cached tensors are backed by the checkpoint's file pages. By the second load, the page cache had dropped most of them: the job's page cache fell from 841-888 GB to 56-171 GB. So the hit read the checkpoint back through page faults. On main the test used up to 2227 s of its 2700 s limit, with second loads of 651-1194 s. In the CI run that timed out, the second load took 1675 s.
Change
The test sets TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE=0 for its own duration with monkeypatch.setenv. Both loads then take rank-striped read-ahead, which re-reads the extents the page cache drops while materialization runs (#21094).
Session reuse compares the environment a pool froze at spawn with the current one. So the test gets a pool spawned with the cache off, and its two legs still share that pool. The comment above the override names what turns the cache on and when the override can go.
The shared session-reuse defaults and the loader are unchanged. The owner decided on https://nvbugs/7043301 to opt this test out of the cache and to leave broader cache-policy changes to a follow-up, https://nvbugs/7053521.
Test Coverage
The bug's test, which l0_dgx_b300.yml runs in its post-merge stages, was run:
on 4x B300, with main at 7804687 built for SM103 in the CI image;
with the CI stage's pytest options;
first in its group, as in CI, followed by the group's next test, accuracy/test_disaggregated_serving.py::TestDeepSeekR1::test_kv_cache_v2_nixl_python[cache_mgr_v2]. The session is stopped once that test has started its server.
main and this change (at d92ad24; the later commit changes only a comment) alternated on 4 nodes, one run of each per node, in both orders. Load times are rank 0's total_model_loading_seconds.

The main run that failed tripped the MTP1-vs-identity gate (delta -1.25 against the 1.2 bound), which this change does not touch. With this change, the deltas were -0.38 to +0.30.
In every run with this change:
both loads logged Checkpoint I/O policy: requested=auto, selected=rank_striped_read_ahead, activated=True, effective=rank_striped_read_ahead, fallback_reason=none, and no cache hit;
the MTP1 leg reused the identity leg's pool;
the next test drained the cached pool before starting its server, and that server's environment had no TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE, as on main.
On main, both loads logged effective=native, fallback_reason=rank 0: the raw HF weight cache is enabled.
… cache hit
A hit in the raw HF weight cache returned the cached SafeTensors tensors
without the prefetch that a miss runs; it only issued the same allreduce
and barrier. The cached tensors are backed by the checkpoint's file pages,
and the page cache can drop those pages after the entry is stored. The
hit's integrity check and the model's weight materialization then read
the checkpoint back from storage through page faults.
_with_weight_cache now takes the prefetch as its own step, which holds all
collectives of the load, and runs it once per load on every path: on a
miss before the load, on a hit before the entry's integrity check. A hit
whose entry fails that check reloads without a second round of
collectives, so every rank still enqueues the same collectives whether it
hits, misses or reloads.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Test coverage summary: sufficient.
Added tests:test_cache_hit_prefetches_checkpoint_before_reading_cached_tensors and test_mutated_cache_hit_issues_the_miss_collectives_once. No tests were modified or removed.
Behavior covered:
A cache hit prefetches the checkpoint files before any cached-tensor read, and _load_weights_in_parallel runs only once.
An integrity-invalid hit reloads from disk. It issues the same allreduce then barrier sequence as a miss, and issues it once.
Existing coverage kept:test_cache_hit_and_miss_issue_identical_collectives still covers a plain hit versus a miss.
Test lists: the file is an existing module. I did not check whether its selector in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml covers the new test IDs. The tests use mocks and CPU tensors, so they belong in the CPU list.
Gap, optional: no test covers the path where _can_cache_weights returns false. That path still runs prefetch_fn once.

Thanks for the detailed root cause and the B300 numbers. Splitting the load into prefetch_fn/load_fn keeps the node-local collective sequence identical on the hit, miss, skip and mutated-hit paths, and it removes the hand-written mirror on the hit path. This review has 1 blocker, 1 possibly blocking, 3 required and 3 nice-to-have items. The code-level ones are inline; these two are about the PR itself:
[Required] The auto-generated CodeRabbit block in the description (Dev Engineer Review / QA Engineer Review / Per-File QA Perspective) says the new unit tests are in no CI list ("integration-list registration is not applicable") and that CI results "are not available". But tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml:153 (unittest/_torch/models/checkpoints) collects both new tests on the CPU stages with -m cpu_only. The PR template asks "If using CodeRabbit's summary, please make sure it makes sense". Please delete or correct that block so the squash commit doesn't carry it.
[Nice to have] No pre-merge CI has run on cd3dbd3 yet. Please /bot run and confirm that the CPU stages collecting the new tests (l0_cpu.yml:153) pass. The "197 passed" in the description is a local run.
Thanks for the thorough review. I measured your warm-hit question first, and the result changes the approach; the details are in the _with_weight_cache thread. With the two arms alternating on 4 nodes, the bug's test took 953-1043 s with the cache off and 1191-1256 s with this PR's hit prefetch. So I'd rather drop the hit prefetch than refine it.
Once one of the two options there is settled, I'll rework the PR. Option 1 changes the shared test setup, so for that one the bot also needs the decision on https://nvbugs/7043301.
The blocker, the annotations and the two test requests are about the hit prefetch and _prefetch_weight_files, and both options remove them. I'll address whatever still applies in the reworked version.
I've removed the CodeRabbit block from the description. It was wrong about the test lists: l0_cpu.yml:153 collects unittest/_torch/models/checkpoints. CodeRabbit may add the block back on its next review, so I'll check the description again before merge.
The bot's account cannot start CI. I'll ask the bug's engineer to run /bot run on the reworked head.
CodeRabbit's optional gap is a load that skips the cache because the checkpoint does not fit. The existing test_cache_skip_issues_the_miss_collectives already covers it.
* Why?
File-backed cached weights can lose their resident pages between
the GLM identity and MTP1 loads, causing slow reads and test timeouts.
Prefetching cache hits adds overhead and can still lose pages during
loading.
* What?
Replace cache-hit prefetch changes and their dedicated tests with
a test-scoped cache opt-out. Keep rank-striped read-ahead available
for both loads while preserving MPI worker reuse. Restore the
environment afterward and retain existing defaults for other tests.

Thanks for switching to the test-scoped opt-out decided on the NVBug; the earlier loader threads no longer apply to this head. I traced the override end to end and it works: session reuse injects TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE=1 only when the variable is unset (tests/test_common/session_reuse.py:429), the parent's TRTLLM* variables reach the workers at spawn (tensorrt_llm/llmapi/mpi_session.py:688-693), a cached or prefetched pool spawned before the setenv is dropped on the env-snapshot check (session_reuse.py:371-383, session_prefetcher.py:584), and the two legs still share one pool. So both loads take rank-striped read-ahead and the neighboring tests are unaffected. This review has 0 blockers, 0 possibly blocking, 1 required and 2 nice-to-have items: one is inline, and these two are about the PR itself:
[Required] The title and description still describe the loader change that d92ad24 reverted, so the squash commit would record a fix and two tests that are not in it:
the title is "Prefetch the checkpoint on an HF weight cache hit";
the Fix section describes _with_weight_cache taking a prefetch_fn and _prefetch_and_load becoming _prefetch_weight_files;
Test Coverage lists two new tests in tests/unittest/_torch/models/checkpoints/hf/test_weight_loader.py, a local "197 passed" and the B300 table measured on cd3dbd3;
the regenerated CodeRabbit block says the change "avoids cache-hit prefetch overhead", but main has no hit prefetch: the opt-out avoids the native load and the second leg's hit on dropped file pages.
The diff against the merge base is now only the +4/-1 in test_glm_moe_dsa.py. The PR template asks to "explain the issue and the solution in short" and, for CodeRabbit's summary, to "make sure it makes sense"; the NVBug owner asked for this update as well. Please retitle, e.g. [https://nvbugs/7043301][test] Turn off the HF weight cache in the GLM-5.2 SM103 TEP4 GSM8K test. Use [test] rather than [fix]: the slow cache-hit path and session reuse turning the cache on stay as they are, so link the follow-up that tracks them, or keep the bug open. Then rewrite the description for this head: keep the root cause, make the Fix the test-scoped TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE=0 (session-reuse defaults and the loader unchanged), put the cache-off B300 numbers from your thread reply (4/4 passed, 953-1043 s, second load 222-260 s) and the run on this head under Test Coverage, and drop the unit-test, "197 passed" and cd3dbd3 claims.
[Nice to have] Please run this head on B300 before merge. The test is listed only in the post_merge block of tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_dgx_b300.yml (:17-18, :75), so a plain /bot run never runs it. No CI has run on this PR yet, and the NVBug lists GPU validation of d92ad24 as pending; the cache-off numbers in the thread come from the merge base with the variable set outside the test, not through this monkeypatch. For example, /bot run --extra-stage "DGX_B300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-Post-Merge-1,DGX_B300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-Post-Merge-2" (jenkins/L0_Test.groovy:7148-7149). Then add to the description the test time against the 45-min TIMEOUT and, for both loads, the loader's Checkpoint I/O policy: ... effective=rank_striped_read_ahead line (weight_loader.py:184-188).
…ht cache off
The comment above the test's TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE=0 override now names
what turns the cache on for the test (test session reuse), what goes wrong
with it on (the MTP1 leg's cache hit reads SafeTensors pages that can be
dropped during the identity leg), and when the override can be removed.
"0" is also the loader's default, so without that the line reads as a
no-op. Comments only: the module's AST is unchanged.

[https://nvbugs/7043301][test] Turn off the HF weight cache in the GLM-5.2 SM103 TEP4 GSM8K test
Nov 5, 2026
@2ez4bz I re-evaluated at d92ad24 on 4x B300 with the CI stage's pytest options. As in CI, the test ran first in its group, followed by the group's next test. main and d92ad24 alternated on 4 nodes:
d92ad24: 4/4 passed in 858-957 s of the 2700 s limit, with first loads of 297-303 s and second loads of 146-159 s. Both loads logged effective=rank_striped_read_ahead, with no native fallback and no cache hit. The MTP1 leg reused the identity leg's pool.
main: 3/4 passed in 1611-1909 s, with cache-hit second loads of 651-931 s. The fourth run tripped the MTP1-vs-identity gate (delta -1.25 against 1.2).
The next test drained that pool before starting its server. The server's environment had no TRTLLM_HF_WEIGHT_CACHE, as on main.
Title and description: I retitled with [test] as you suggested and rewrote the description for this head:
the root cause;
the test-scoped override, with the session-reuse defaults and the loader unchanged;
the runs above under Test Coverage, including the effective-policy line of both loads.
The unit-test, "197 passed" and cd3dbd3 claims are gone, and so is CodeRabbit's block.
Follow-up: I've asked on https://nvbugs/7043301 whether to link a follow-up for the cache policy or keep the bug open.
B300 CI: #82891 is a plain /bot run, which does not include the post-merge stages that run this test. I've asked for /bot run --extra-stage "DGX_B300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-Post-Merge-1,DGX_B300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-Post-Merge-2" on 69b5ae4, and will add its result to the description.
The setenv comment: done in 69b5ae4, comments only (see the inline thread).
The PR still needs an approval from a code owner of test_glm_moe_dsa.py (.github/CODEOWNERS). They are already requested as reviewers: could one of you review this test change?
Automatically added "ci: full pre-merge approved" because this PR has satisfied the required GitHub review approvals. Unresolved review conversations and other required checks remain independent merge requirements.
@sunnyqgg the follow-up for the cache policy is https://nvbugs/7053521, and I've linked it in the description. https://nvbugs/7043301 stays the bug this PR fixes. CI with the two B300 post-merge stages is running on 69b5ae4 (#82904), and I'll add its result to the description.
