[None][perf] CuTe DSL act-fusion GEMMs: key the early accumulator release on the loop index - #21842
Both kernels now compare the early accumulator-release threshold against the subtile’s processing-order index. The reversed index still selects accumulator data and output locations. This keeps release timing aligned with processing order on reversed tiles without changing those selections. No API or scope changes are present.

No test changes.
Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/kernels/blackwell/dense_blockscaled_gemm_act_fusion.py: Verify that early accumulator release occurs at the configured processing-order subtile when overlapping accumulation reverses the accumulator index. Confirm output behavior remains unchanged.
tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/kernels/blackwell/blockscaled_contiguous_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion.py: Verify early release uses processing order while accumulator reads and stores retain the reversed index where required. Test results are not available.
Description
With a 256-wide MMA N tile, BlockScaledContiguousGatherGroupedGemmKernel (the CuteDSL NVFP4 MoE FC1) and Sm100BlockScaledPersistentDenseGemmActFusionKernel run with one accumulator stage, and their two TMEM accumulator buffers overlap (overlapping_accum). On every other tile the epilogue walks its subtiles in reverse (reverse_subtile), so that it reads the overlapped columns first. It then releases the accumulator once iter_acc_early_release_in_epilogue + 1 subtiles have been read, so the next tile's MMAs can start.
Both kernels compare real_subtile_idx with that count after the index has been remapped for the reverse walk. On a reversed tile the remapped index reaches the count only near the end of the walk: at the last subtile when the count is 0, as it is for the shapes below. So on every reversed tile the accumulator is released after (almost) the whole epilogue, and the next tile's MMAs wait for it. The other CuTe DSL grouped GEMMs (blockscaled_contiguous_grouped_gemm.py, blockscaled_contiguous_grouped_gemm_finalize_fusion.py, blockscaled_contiguous_grouped_gemm_swiglu_fusion.py, moe_as_dense_gemm/fc1.py) already compare the loop index.
This PR compares the subtile's position in processing order, taken before the reverse remap. The TMEM loads, the stores and the outputs do not change. Only the release moves earlier, to the point where forward-walk tiles already release.
Measured on B200 with the gather kernel, in the TensorRT-LLM 1.4.0rc1 container (its code at these lines matches main). We used the Relu2 MoE FC1 of NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Super-VL-120B-A12B-NVFP4 (K 1024, N 2688, 512 experts, top-22), MMA tile 256x256, cluster (2, 1), raster_along_m=False. Both sides of the comparison include an N-boundary scale-factor guard equivalent to the one #21401 added (we had applied it locally), so the numbers carry over to current main.

Other measurements of the change against the unguarded kernel (four runs, same raster) gave 1.04-1.08x in 10 of 11 cases, and 1.00x once (at 32K). Two back-to-back runs of the unchanged kernel differed by up to 3.5%, so we would call the gain about 5%.
The FP4 outputs and scale factors are byte-identical with and without the change at all three sizes. An in-kernel clock trace at 32K tokens shows the cause. Before the change, the epilogue warps wait for a full accumulator 18% of the time; after it, 2%. Time per tile drops by 8%.
The dense kernel has the identical code and gets the identical change. We did not time it.
Test Coverage
Existing tests that run the two kernels: test_nvfp4_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion_blackwell in tests/unittest/_torch/moe/kernels/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py, and the fp4-out and bf16-out GELU/SwiGLU tests in tests/unittest/_torch/kernels/parallel/test_dense_gemm_act_fusion.py. The change does not alter outputs, so no new test is added.
Compile check without a GPU, for sm_100a, of both kernels on current main with a 256-wide N tile: Relu2 and SwiGLU for the gather kernel, SwiGLU and GELU for the dense kernel. In the generated PTX the only difference is the predicate in front of the early release (tcgen05.wait::ld and the mbarrier.arrive). Before the change it compares the reversed index; after it, the loop position.
GPU: the gather kernel measurements above, on B200. We have not run the unit tests on main, or the change on B300/GB300.

…ease on the loop index
With a 256-wide MMA N tile the gather/act-fusion MoE FC1 kernel and the dense
act-fusion GEMM overlap their two TMEM accumulator buffers (overlapping_accum).
On every other tile the epilogue walks its subtiles in reverse, so that it
reads the overlapped columns first, and it releases the accumulator after
iter_acc_early_release_in_epilogue + 1 subtiles so the next tile's MMAs can
start. Both kernels compared that count with the subtile index after the
reverse remap, so on reversed tiles the accumulator was released only after
the last subtile and the next tile's MMAs waited for the whole epilogue.
Compare the subtile's position in processing order instead, as the other
CuTe DSL grouped GEMMs already do. Loads, stores and outputs are unchanged.

Both Blackwell GEMM epilogues save the forward-processing subtile index before overlapping-accumulator logic can reverse the accumulator index. Early accumulator-release checks use the saved index.

Summary
Preserve subtile processing order tensorrt_llm/_torch/kernels/blackwell/dense_blockscaled_gemm_act_fusion.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/kernels/blackwell/blockscaled_contiguous_gather_grouped_gemm_act_fusion.py
Both epilogues save the processing-order index before any accumulator-index reversal. Each early-release check now uses the saved index.
Release timing lacks regression coverage, so a future change could erase the performance gain unnoticed. Merge with a test follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to f47ff
The earlier release remains after the required accumulator reads and synchronization. The reviewed change does not introduce a new access path, broaden privileges, or materially weaken data isolation. No security concern was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced behavior is confined to accumulator reuse within existing dense and MoE kernel invocations. The full comparison adds no caller, input channel, credential use, or resource authority; it does not show expanded attacker-controlled reachability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing producer/consumer ownership controls remain: producers acquire before MMA writes and commit afterward; consumers wait before reading, fence TMEM loads before early release, and advance the accumulator state once per tile. Non-overlapping execution retains end-of-tile release.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The scheduling loops retain their producer-tail waits, tensor-memory cleanup, and output-store completion handling. This PR changes release timing, not termination or recovery protocols.

Add a test for the overlapping accumulator release.
The identified dense tests do not pin the N=256 tactic; the runner fallback uses N=128, which disables overlap. (raw.githubusercontent.com) Add a test in tests/unittest/_torch/kernels/parallel/test_dense_gemm_act_fusion.py that forces N=256 and processes multiple tiles per CTA. Check output and scale factors, and verify that the reversed tile releases before its final subtile. This can catch both unsafe reuse and a return to the delayed release.
As per path instructions: “A bug fix without a practical regression test” is a material coverage gap.
