fix(cornerstone): decode ECG waveform bulkdata through the data source - #6346
Conversation
The ECG module builder fetched WaveformData.BulkDataURI itself and read the response as raw Int16 samples. DICOMweb returns bulkdata as multipart/related by default, so the samples were shifted, or the Int16Array constructor threw on an odd byte count. An instance without data returned no channels, and the ECG viewport then failed in canvasToWorld. Build the module with buildEcgModuleFromInstance from @cornerstonejs/metadata. When the data source attached retrieveBulkData to WaveformData, use it to get the bytes: the DICOMweb client decodes multipart or single part, and applies the auth headers and the relative bulkdata URI fix. - Decode typed arrays from a data source retrieveBulkData on the released @cornerstonejs/metadata, by passing the bytes as an ArrayBuffer. - Use the cached WaveformData.Value and keep the decoded channels, so a re-mount does not fetch again. - Restore the lowercase codeMeaning fallback for lead names. - Notify the user when the ECG waveform does not load, for both ECG viewports. - Set the current auth headers on the shared DICOMweb client at bulkdata fetch time. …l and the lead code value - viewportOptions.traceLayout in a hanging protocol takes a registered ECG layout name, such as '3x4+1', or a full layout definition. - The viewport service passes traceLayout in the viewport input defaultOptions, and applies it again after the ECG mounts. A Generic Viewport ECG takes it in its view state. An older ECG viewport takes a name as layoutType. An ECG viewport without layouts ignores it and keeps one row for each lead. - buildEcgModule passes codeValue and codingSchemeDesignator of each channel source, which older @cornerstonejs/metadata versions omit. A trace layout names a lead by its code value, and falls back to the code meaning when the code value is missing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Tested locally against Orthanc (DICOMweb plugin) with anonymous_ecg.dcm from OHIF/viewer-testdata (12 leads, 10000 samples).
Testing
- The
WaveformDatabulkdata request comes back asmultipart/related, which is the case that broke before this change. - All 12 leads render with the legacy ECG viewport and with
ECG_NEXT(?useNextViewports=true). NocanvasToWorld/baselineerror in the console. - A layout change and re-mount does not send a second bulkdata request.
- With the bulkdata request blocked in DevTools, the "The ECG waveform could not be loaded." notification shows.
- Baseline without this change (ECG code identical to master,
ECG_NEXTviewport): the bulkdata request goes out withAccept: application/octet-stream, Orthanc returns 400 Bad Request, and the uncaught error takes the whole viewer route into the Error Boundary. With this branch, the same study loads via amultipart/relatedresponse and the leads render.
Comment
The PR description leaves out the trace-layout feature. Commit e05d356 adds a traceLayout viewport option, applyEcgTraceLayout, a new type in platform/core/src/types/HangingProtocol.ts, and lead codeValue passthrough. The description doesn't mention any of it. Could you add a section on it, including how to try it out? No hanging protocol in the repo sets traceLayout yet, so I couldn't test it.
The bulkdata fix itself looks good, and routing through the data source's retrieveBulkData is the right call.
…layout - Remove the traceLayout viewport option. The viewport service passes only named options to Cornerstone, so the trace layout needs its own wiring, which a later ECG change adds. - _setEcgViewport shows the notification and then rejects, so setViewportData logs the error and does not broadcast VIEWPORT_DATA_CHANGED. - decodeBulkData throws a clear error when the builder returns null. - Keep the lead codeValue and codingSchemeDesignator, and document them as a workaround for buildEcgModuleFromInstance. @jbocce Thank you for the test against Orthanc. I removed the trace layout from this PR in e7cd14c. The hanging protocol service passes all keys of This PR keeps one part of that commit: |
…mnGrid The required numImageFrames rule of mnGrid used greaterThan 0, and the greaterThan validator tests >=. Thus every display set with a frame count passed, and SR and SEG display sets got the same score as images. The rule now gives weight to image frames, to the ECG modality and to the SM modality, so these display sets rank before display sets with nothing to show. Thanks for the updates. The trace-layout removal and the two error-handling fixes look good.
mnGrid change puts SEG into the segmentation mode layout
The segmentation mode uses @ohif/mnGrid by default (modes/segmentation/src/index.tsx), so the seriesWithImages change isn't limited to &hangingProtocolId=@ohif/mnGrid.
Repro: open 1.3.6.1.4.1.25403.345050719074.3824.20170125113417.1 in the segmentation route. On master (e.g. viewer-dev.ohif.org) only the image series is hung. On this branch, a SEG series is added to the layout by default.
Cause: removing required: true. Real SEG and SR display sets have no numImageFrames (undefined, not 0), so the old required rule (undefined >= 0 fails) excluded them entirely. The commit message says SR and SEG used to tie with images, but that only holds when they have numImageFrames: 0, as in the new unit test. What actually tied with images before was PDF, ECG and SM (all numImageFrames: 0). Without the required rule, SEG and SR become score-0 candidates and fill spare viewports.
Suggested fix: keep the original required rule, and add the new weighted rules next to it.
- The required rule (
numImageFramesgreaterThan0, which tests>= 0) leaves out any display set with no frame count. That keeps SEG and SR out of the grid, as on master. - The new rules then rank what's left: images (at least 1 frame), ECG and SM get 2 points, while PDF (0 frames, not ECG or SM) gets 1.
So images, ECG and SM still fill the grid first, and SEG/SR no longer appear.
The SR case in the new seriesSelectors.test.ts uses numImageFrames: 0, but real SEG and SR display sets don't set numImageFrames at all. That's why the test passes while the segmentation mode shows the SEG. Could the test use a display set without numImageFrames, so it covers this case?
Minor: updateViewport doesn't handle the re-thrown error
setViewportData now has a rejection handler, but updateViewport (displaySetPromise.then(...), ~line 1544) doesn't. With ECG_NEXT, NextViewportBackend.remount goes through _setEcgViewport, so a failed waveform load on re-mount shows the toast but also logs an Uncaught (in promise). Non-blocking.
The mnGrid change put SEG display sets into the default layout of the segmentation mode. The change now has its own PR, so this PR keeps the mnGrid rules of master. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…led rejection With ECG_NEXT, a failed waveform load on re-mount rejects through updateViewport. The notification showed, but the rejection had no handler, so the console also logged Uncaught (in promise). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

I redid the tests from #6346 (review). The code changes look fine. I will check the other PR for the mnGrid changes soon. Approved but please wait for the Playwright tests to pass. There is one test I think that keeps failing that we should address soon.

buildEcgModulenow callsbuildEcgModuleFromInstancefrom@cornerstonejs/metadata. OHIF no longer keeps its own copy of the decoder.retrieveBulkDatatoWaveformData, the wrapper uses that method to get the bytes. The DICOMweb data source then does these steps:WaveformData.Valuewhen the data source already cached the bytes there. The wrapper keeps the decoded channels, and it retries after a failed load.ArrayBuffer. The released builder unwraps a typed array to its first element, and then it fails._setEcgViewportcatches a failed mount from both viewport backends. Before this change, no caller handled the rejected promise.setViewportDataandupdateViewportlog a rejected mount or re-mount. Before this change, a failed ECG re-mount withECG_NEXTshowed the notification, and the console also loggedUncaught (in promise).retrieveBulkDataruns. Before this change, the bulkdata request used the last headers that another operation set on the client. After a token refresh, those headers can be out of date.buildEcgModulegives agetHeadersoption tobuildEcgModuleFromInstancefor a directBulkDataURIfetch. The released@cornerstonejs/metadataignores this option, and a pending Cornerstone ECG change adds it. Without that change, a direct fetch sends no auth header. The DICOMweb data source does not use the direct fetch, because it always attachesretrieveBulkData. This change works with the released
@cornerstonejs/metadata5.10.3 and 5.11.7. It does not need a new Cornerstone release. It works with the legacy ECG viewport and with theECG_NEXTviewport.A related Cornerstone change in cornerstonejs/cornerstone3D#2899 fixes the multipart decoder of
