How we support guest teachers #157

Description

@jules32

@stefaniebutland , in preparation for ESA guest teachers, could you please reflect and write some notes for ourselves here:

https://openscapes.github.io/approach-guide/champions/pre-cohort-engage.html#guest-teachers

A start for the intro:

In Openscapes we invest in growing as teachers, mentors, coaches, communicators. We do this through our own training as a group (Carpentries Instructors, mentor-coach) and through structures (dry runs, giving feedback - content & delivery).

We try to share what we've learned about growing as a teacher with our guest teachers. We do this by.... Here is Stef's bullets for the first meeting:

    When drafting, consider, how I would prep to support a dry run from a guest teacher. "We think a lot about our audience...". Think about dry run with Rachael and make notes when prepping for Andy B's dry run.

    • We have a process for supporting guest teachers to help bring your expertise into the types of lessons we’ve found resonate with our participants. During the Calls, we intro teachers so there is context. Give an example slide deck [e.g. Rachael’s metadata] - it is 15 mins, …
    • ask guest teacher to share a bullet list, no slides yet, of the content to be shared.
    • What will happen next is that you’ll meet with an Openscapes team member twice: first to talk through these things, and then you’ll have a dry run. Please confirm what time works for you, or suggest other times.
    • Openscapes lessons are designed and delivered as if you are sitting across the table from a dear grad school friend who doesn’t yet’ know about FAIR, for example. Actionable. How do these metadata principles fit with metadata for EO science workflows and data management.
    • First time teaching, teach from an existing lesson and slides; Second time, create new lesson on your topic. This serves to onboard you to our process, reuse and test existing materials with a new audience (e.g. Call 3) and adapt your own expert material to a new audience (e.g. Call 4).

    Hi @stefaniebutland, as you're preparing invites for NOAA Guest Teachers, would you also have time to come back to this and add to the Approach Guide? Thank you!
