performance statistics #286

this is NOT a bug report but rather a performance statistics report

the tests were conducted on a laptop running Void Linux

Linux totallynotarchlinux 6.12.81_1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sat Apr 11 17:15:45 UTC 2026 x86_64 GNU/Linux
/lib/ld-musl-x86_64.so.1

I used a cudy WU1400 on a USB-2, with a 5 meter cable

ID 0bda:b812 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL88x2bu [AC1200 Techkey]

the test was as a simple WPA2 PSK (CCMP) client

on a Hellenic island connected to an aprox 1km wifi cafe using a local external 26dbi grid antenna, over the sea, near the sea level

I used the GVTC HTML5 Speedtest for all the tests that were repeated three times each

the following RTL88x2bu drivers were tested:

• linux 6.12.81 mainline average download of 28Mbit
• rtw88/0.6 average download of 48Mbit
• rtl88x2bu/5.13.1-30 (RinCat) average download of 58Mbit
• rtl88x2bu/5.8.7.1 (cilynx) average download of 70Mbit
• rtl88x2bu/5.13.1 (morrownr) average download of 75Mbit

I did not took a note of the link quality of each test.

as a reference here is the link quality on that same link on a OpenWrt 25.12.2

using:

following are the results of the cudy WU1400 under OpenWrt 25.12.2

rtw88_8822bu 1-1.2:1.0: Firmware version 30.20.0, H2C version 14

rtw88_8822bu looks is the mainline kernel driver

average download of 73Mbit

there is a persistent kernel warning though (sorry for the OT, feel free to remove it)

which apparently does not seem to affect the wifi performance/stability but it does create issues with each cold reboot as openwrt fails to retain the wifi usb configuration
