Description

Add an in-place refresh command for embedded dashboards.

The host currently rebuilds the Grafana root when an authorized analytics projection becomes current. Production validation showed that this blanks loaded panels and repeats filter requests. An optional, monotonic per-dashboard refreshRevision now invokes the existing time-range/variable/panel refresh pipeline on the owning dashboard, without replacing its React tree or control portals.

Repeated or older revisions are no-ops; initial mount does not issue an extra refresh. Invalid revisions and missing/mismatched dashboard ownership reject the command, and a failed refresh does not consume its revision. Variable requests carry their owning dashboard UID through deferred datasource setup. Variable-completion events also carry that UID so refreshing one dashboard does not refresh another; legacy events without a UID retain their existing behavior.

Deployment

Backward-compatible Grafana-only deployment, US and EU. Existing hosts omit the property and retain their current behavior. Deploy this contract before merging the mono host consumer. No IAM, database, ingestion or tenant-isolation changes. Rollback this fork only before enabling the new host consumer, or revert the host consumer first.

Validation

  • Focused lifecycle, request-ownership, and real variable-to-panel tests: 4 suites / 26 tests passed.
  • The two-dashboard regression runs the actual asynchronous variable action and two real DashboardModel event handlers; only the matching UID reaches startRefresh.
  • Fail-before verified: removing the UID event guard refreshes the non-owning dashboard; removing request.dashboardUID fails the variable-runner ownership assertion.
  • Scoped ESLint, Prettier and diff checks passed.
  • Production Docker build/startup health runs in this PR's CI.
  • Local broad typecheck reports existing VolkovLabs dependency/type failures; no changed-file errors identified. Not claiming a clean full typecheck.

User intent: fast tenant-isolated analytics with visible, unobtrusive refresh status and no blanking of usable panels. Keep rollout internal until user review. This PR is the backward-compatible MFE provider contract, not a reader rollout.

Start with git diff origin/coderabbit_micro_frontend...HEAD; inspect public/app/fn-app/create-mfe.ts, public/app/features/variables/query/VariableQueryRunner.ts, public/app/features/dashboard/state/DashboardModel.ts, and public/app/features/variables/state/onTimeRangeUpdated.test.ts. Next: verify CI, normal review/merge, then deploy both regions before the mono host consumes refreshRevision. Do not admin merge without specific user authorization.

Redux owner selection lasts only through synchronous thunk binding; deferred variable requests retain ownership through explicit request.dashboardUID. The previous global owner is restored before awaiting variable completion. Review ownership, async variable completion, repeated revisions and initial-mount behavior. Canned SQL, authorization, scoped credentials and all rollout gates remain unchanged. No customer data or credentials are included in the tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Fixed dashboard refreshes triggered by variable and time-range updates so they affect only the originating dashboard.
    • Prevented unrelated dashboards from refreshing when asynchronous variable processing completes.
    • Improved refresh handling to ensure dashboards update reliably and restore the previously active rendering target afterward.
    • Ensured variable data requests are associated with the correct dashboard.
  • New Features

    • Added support for one-time dashboard refresh requests, processing them in order and only when a newer request is received.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The MFE state now carries an optional monotonic refreshRevision. Higher revisions trigger an in-place dashboard refresh without rebuilding the React tree. The refresh flow validates dashboard ownership, updates the dashboard time range, awaits completion, and restores the prior rendering target. Variable completion events now include an optional dashboard UID, so dashboards ignore events owned by another dashboard while accepting legacy events without a UID. Tests cover revision ordering, ownership, mounting, and asynchronous variable refresh behavior.

The dashboard ownership field can still be changed after an event is created. This is a bounded contract issue and should be corrected or explicitly accepted before merge.

And dashboards refresh under open skies.
No React trees fell apart,

Old commands quietly hopped away,

Mark refreshRevision as readonly.

This field is a host-owned DTO value. Prevent consumers from mutating it directly.

Remove the private-method spy and double assertion.

variablesTimeRangeProcessDoneHandler is private and accepts a VariablesTimeRangeProcessDone event. A typed jest.spyOn call cannot access it without another assertion. Remove this spy and its call-count assertion. The existing completion-event and dashboard-refresh assertions cover the handler's observable behavior.

mountFnApp merges INITIAL_FN_STATE, whose refreshRevision is explicitly 0. nextFnRefreshRevision also treats 0 as the baseline. The inspected repository does not define revision 0 as a first actionable refresh, so the proposed distinction between omission and 0 is unsupported.

Independent CodeRabbit CLI review completed against the final PR diff.

CodeRabbit raised 4 issues. After verifying each against the current code, two remain actionable:

  • ⚠️ Major — public/app/fn-app/create-mfe.ts: the accepted refreshRevision is recorded only after await refreshDashboard(...). Two overlapping updates carrying the same higher revision can both observe the old revision and trigger duplicate refresh/query work. Reserve the revision before awaiting, with explicit rollback/consumption semantics if refresh fails.
  • ℹ️ Minor — public/app/features/variables/query/VariableQueryRunner.ts: variable.rootStateKey is nullable, but it is assigned directly to optional dashboardUID. Normalize it with variable.rootStateKey ?? undefined so non-MFE requests do not serialize null.

I skipped two findings after verification: the refresh helper already receives a UID string, and restoring the shared rendering UID before awaiting is intentional because the request is now bound from rootStateKey; that behavior is covered by the focused ownership tests.

The PR is already merged, so the major item should be handled as a follow-up before relying on revision deduplication under overlapping host updates.
