fix: restore CLI fallback and Node 20.0 compatibility - #1733
Running task-master, task-master tui, or task-master repl after a clean installation can fail while importing undeclared React, before reaching the existing unavailable-TUI fallback. Load the TUI first and import React only when rendering is possible, so unavailable TUI mode prints the existing message and real CLI help and exits successfully.
Changes
Exercise the actual built CLI with React resolution explicitly denied, covering no arguments, tui, repl, --help, and --version.
Discover TypeScript tests generically within Jest's existing tests root. Separate source tests from the four suites requiring built CLI artifacts; build once only when one of those suites is selected. CI can explicitly reuse artifacts from the same revision, with a missing-artifact guard.
Preserve the declared Node >=20.0.0 range: use portable JSON bridges and the already locked tsup build tool, targeting Node 20.0. Retain Windows absolute-path handling, entry names, assets, build-time variables, and development watch behavior.
Load the Gemini SDK on demand and bundle a reproducible compatibility snapshot of SDK 1.4.0. Its only runtime change replaces the Google Core barrel import with the three-symbol content-generator entry, avoiding unrelated CLI tools that import unavailable Node APIs. Keep upstream authentication, structured-output, and streaming logic intact.
Verify the SDK's exact version, source hash, license hash, and single replacement during generation and standard builds. Declare its runtime dependencies directly, keep the original SDK as a pinned development dependency, and ship the complete MIT license with dist.
Retain the Windows test portability and isolation fixes: native paths, deterministic filesystem errors, isolated project/authentication directories, and direct Node subprocess execution.
Test CI on Node 20.0.0 and Node 20, including a standard build on the minimum version.
The Google Core deep entry is an internal upstream path. Core and Genai versions are pinned; upgrading requires reviewing the import graph, regenerating the snapshot, and rerunning source, build, and installed-package checks. A declaration bridge preserves upstream types without expanding the implementation's internal type graph during Jest transforms.

Both whole-root Jest runs completed with the existing skip set. The minimum-version run used the default heap limit. Workspace-specific and end-to-end runners are not included in these totals.
Standard production builds passed on Node 20.0.0 and 24.11.1, producing identical hashes for all 22 JavaScript artifacts.
Real Gemini SDK source and built-module checks passed on Node 20.0.0, 20.19.5, and 24.11.1: generateObject and streamObject execute the actual SDK/Core/AI code; only HTTP responses are controlled. OAuth model construction is covered; live OAuth login and cloud inference were not performed.
The same SDK generation scenario fails on the original SDK under Node 20.0.0 with missing addAbortListener, and succeeds with the compatibility snapshot.
A fresh consumer outside the repository installed the packed package with production dependencies only under Node 20.0.0. React and the original development SDK were both absent. All five CLI cases exited 0; the installed SDK chunk generated both expected objects, and the bundled MIT license matched its source.
Windows packaging used npm pack --ignore-scripts after the standard build to skip the existing postpack chmod wrapper; installed entry points were executed through Node.
Standard formatting (993 files), affected build-config/core/MCP type checks, SDK snapshot verification, changeset validation, lockfile dry-run validation, and git diff --check passed. Existing dependency resolution versions and integrity values remain unchanged.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
The CLI now displays its fallback message and help when TUI mode is unavailable, without requiring React to be installed.
Tests
Added coverage for CLI fallback behavior, including help and version commands.
Improved test reliability across operating systems, including checks for filesystem errors and configuration paths.
The CLI now checks TUI availability before importing React. The PR adds fallback integration coverage and updates Jest setup, test portability, and build configuration.

launchREPL imports React only after a TUI is available. When no TUI is available, it displays the existing fallback message and help.
Run and verify CLI fallback integration tests jest.config.js, package.json, biome.json, tests/integration/cli/tui-fallback.test.ts
Jest includes the TypeScript integration test and runs global setup. The test blocks React imports and checks fallback, help, and version output from the built CLI.

Summary
Prepare and launch test runs tests/global-setup.js, .github/workflows/ci.yml, package.json, jest.config.js, tests/integration/profiles/hamster-rules-distribution.test.js
Global setup builds or verifies the CLI artifact. CI selects prebuilt mode. Hamster profile tests use isolated directories and direct process execution. Jest scripts invoke Jest directly.
Make test assertions platform-aware and isolated tests/integration/cli/move-cross-tag.test.js, tests/integration/manage-gitignore.test.js, tests/integration/profiles/*, tests/unit/profiles/*, tests/unit/task-master.test.js, tests/unit/utils.test.js, biome.json
Path assertions use platform-aware path utilities. Filesystem failures are mocked, and project-root checks are limited to the temporary directory. Biome ignores the temporary test directory.
Running the test suite now builds the CLI first. On older Node 20 releases (before 20.12) that build can fail and stop all tests from starting. CI and recent Node versions are not affected, so this is a bounded local-development risk to address or accept before merging.

Explanation
Issue [#1725] requires that the no-argument, tui, and repl paths avoid importing React when TUI mode is unavailable. They must show the existing coming-soon message and help, then exit normally. The PR summary states that launchREPL in scripts/modules/commands.js now calls loadTUI() first and imports React only when a TUI is returned. I could not read that diff directly, because the changed blobs were unavailable, so this part relies on the supplied summary. The test at the reviewed head, tests/integration/cli/tui-fallback.test.ts, checks the required behavior. It runs the built CLI with a loader hook that makes react resolution fail. For no arguments, tui, and repl, it asserts exit status 0, no Cannot find package 'react' error on stderr, the text TUI mode coming soon!, the text Showing help instead..., and the help header. It also checks --help and --version. The test is the automated coverage the issue calls for. The --experimental-loader hook in the test forces the missing-React condition. It does not show that a clean install lacks React, which the packed-tarball check in the PR description covers separately.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The PR changes fall into three groups. The first group is the React import-order fix and its regression test, which implement #1725. The second group is the changeset, which documents that fix. The third group is portability and validation support: the tsdown absolute-path externalization rule, the ESM version import in tsdown.config.ts, Jest invoked through its JavaScript entry, tests/global-setup.js that builds the CLI before tests, the CI TASKMASTER_TEST_PREBUILT setting, Biome ignore for tests/temp, and test files that use path.join and isolated fixtures. The PR objectives state that these Windows changes are part of the same PR. The global build step supports the regression test, which runs the built CLI. The Windows fixes are not coding requirements of #1725, but they are described in the PR and the summary shows no unrelated product behavior or runtime dependency. No change in the supplied summary is shown to be unconnected to the stated work.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Build the CLI before running this suite.
A fresh checkout has no dist/task-master.js, and the test scripts do not build it. The documented npm install followed by npm test therefore fails all five cases. An existing but stale build can also test old code instead of the current change. CI supplies a build artifact separately. Ensure the local test commands also produce a fresh artifact. #### Support configurable snapshot through `--build-snapshot-config` flag
We are adding a new flag `--build-snapshot-config` to configure snapshots through a custom JSON configuration file.
`$ node --build-snapshot-config=/path/to/myconfig.json`
When using this flag, additional script files provided on the command line will not be executed and instead be interpreted as regular command line arguments.
These changes were contributed by Joyee Cheung and Anna Henningsen in #50453

Keep unit tests runnable on supported Node versions.
The package declares Node >=20.0.0, but this setup builds before every Jest run. The locked rolldown bundle imports styleText from node:util, which is unavailable on Node 20.0–20.11. This can stop all tests before they start.
If the build must support the full declared Node range, isolate it to tests that need the CLI or use build tooling compatible with Node 20.0–20.11.
