Summary

This PR adds comprehensive test coverage for previously untested functions in VectorModule.fs. The tests cover edge cases and error conditions to ensure robust behavior across a wide range of inputs.

Changes Made

  • Added 23 new test cases in VectorManipulationTests.fs
  • All new tests pass successfully
  • Total test count increased from 132 to 155 tests

Test Coverage Results

Metric Before After Improvement
Line Coverage 4.83% (99/2047 lines) 6.39% (131/2047 lines) +1.56pp (+32 lines)
Branch Coverage 1.56% (83/5307 branches) 1.95% (104/5307 branches) +0.39pp (+21 branches)
Test Count 132 tests 155 tests +23 tests

Functions Now Tested

The following VectorModule functions now have test coverage (previously untested):

Core Functions

  • enumerateNonZero - enumerates non-zero elements with their indices
  • split - divides vector at a given index into prefix and suffix
  • chunk - divides vector into equally-sized pieces
  • windowed - creates sliding windows over the vector
  • splitVector - extracts elements at specified indices
  • permuteBy - reorders vector according to a permutation
  • ofSeq - converts sequence to vector
  • pow - raises each element to a specified power
  • sub - extracts subvector from offset to end

Edge Cases Added

  • Empty vector handling for enumerateNonZero
  • Boundary conditions for split (beginning, end)
  • Window size larger than vector for windowed
  • Chunk size larger than vector for chunk
  • Empty/full index arrays for splitVector
  • Negative and out-of-bounds offset error handling for sub
  • Element not found cases for tryFindIndex and findIndex
  • Already-long-enough vector for padRight

Replicating the Test Coverage Measurements

To verify the coverage improvements yourself, run these commands:

# Clean previous coverage data
rm -rf coverage coverage-new

# Build the solution
dotnet build

# Run tests with baseline coverage (on main branch)
git checkout main
dotnet test tests/FsMath.Tests/FsMath.Tests.fsproj \
  --no-build \
  --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" \
  --results-directory ./coverage \
  -- DataCollectionRunSettings.DataCollectors.DataCollector.Configuration.Format=cobertura

# Extract baseline metrics
BASELINE_FILE=$(find ./coverage -name "coverage.cobertura.xml" | head -n 1)
grep -oP 'line-rate="\K[^"]*' "$BASELINE_FILE" | head -n 1 # Should show 0.0483

# Run tests with new coverage (on this branch)
git checkout daily-test-improver-vector-module-20251010-223939
dotnet build
dotnet test tests/FsMath.Tests/FsMath.Tests.fsproj \
  --no-build \
  --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" \
  --results-directory ./coverage-new \
  -- DataCollectionRunSettings.DataCollectors.DataCollector.Configuration.Format=cobertura

# Extract new metrics
NEW_FILE=$(find ./coverage-new -name "coverage.cobertura.xml" | head -n 1)
grep -oP 'line-rate="\K[^"]*' "$NEW_FILE" | head -n 1 # Should show 0.0639

Future Improvement Opportunities

Based on the coverage analysis, here are areas that still need significant testing:

High Priority (0% coverage):

  1. SIMD and Span Primitives - SpanPrimitives.fs, SpanMath.fs, SIMDUtils.fs - These are critical performance components
  2. Linear Algebra - Algebra/LinearAlgebra.fs, Algebra/Householder.fs, Algebra/EVD.fs, Algebra/SVD.fs - Core mathematical operations
  3. Vector Core Operations - Vector.fs, VectorOps.fs - Basic vector arithmetic
  4. Matrix Operations - Many MatrixModule.fs functions remain untested

Medium Priority (partial coverage):

  1. Matrix Core - Matrix.fs currently at 27% coverage - room for significant improvement
  2. Special Functions - SpecialFunctions/Gamma.fs - Mathematical special functions

Recommended Next Steps:

  1. Add tests for basic Vector and VectorOps arithmetic operations (element-wise operations, dot products, etc.)
  2. Test MatrixModule manipulation functions (reshape, flatten, map, etc.)
  3. Add tests for linear algebra operations (QR decomposition, eigenvalues, SVD)
  4. Test SIMD-accelerated operations with various vector sizes

Commands Executed
# Checked existing test files
ls tests/FsMath.Tests/*.fs

# Created branch
git checkout -b daily-test-improver-vector-module-20251010-223939

# Built and tested
dotnet build tests/FsMath.Tests/FsMath.Tests.fsproj
dotnet test tests/FsMath.Tests/FsMath.Tests.fsproj --no-build

# Generated coverage reports
dotnet test tests/FsMath.Tests/FsMath.Tests.fsproj --no-build \
  --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" \
  --results-directory ./coverage-new \
  -- DataCollectionRunSettings.DataCollectors.DataCollector.Configuration.Format=cobertura

# Compared coverage metrics
head -2 ./coverage/coverage.cobertura.xml
head -2 ./coverage-new/coverage.cobertura.xml

# Committed changes
git add tests/FsMath.Tests/VectorManipulationTests.fs
git commit -m "Add comprehensive tests for VectorModule functions"
