On macOS, sample_yuv always converted with BT.709, so BT.601 (and BT.2020) footage came out with shifted hues. The matrix now follows each frame.

  • Source of the matrix: AVFrame::colorspace, read by libavcodec from the stream's VUI. VideoToolbox does not set kCVImageBufferYCbCrMatrixKey on the buffers it hands to ffmpeg (checked: null on a tagged BT.601 clip), so the attachment can't be used. The CPU fallback (mac_frames) now carries the field over too.
  • Path to the shader: the same trick as the range marker. A swizzled view of the Y plane sets green (601) or blue (2020) to 1. BT.709 frames take no view and keep their literal-constant functions, so they render byte-for-byte as before.
  • Test: opt-in a_bt601_frame_keeps_its_hues in hevc10_decode.rs (pure green read as ~216 before).

Stacked on #1408 (same files): its three commits are included here, only the last one is new. I'll rebase once #1408 lands.

Measurements (Mac M1, release)

  • BT.709 reference export (1080p, screen + camera, 30 s): framemd5 identical before/after, for both the untagged and a BT.709-tagged source.
  • Export time, 5 runs each, interleaved: median 4.682 s → 4.684 s (+0.04 %).
  • BT.601 clip (same screen, re-encoded as BT.601): mean abs RGB diff against the BT.709 render of the same content, 9.49 → 2.00.
  • cargo test --lib: 483 passed. hevc10_decode: 3 passed (10-bit, full range, BT.601).

Walkthrough

The macOS compositor propagates frame color-space metadata and uses texture-view markers to select YUV conversion by matrix, range, and sample depth. An optional integration test checks rendered colors from a supplied BT.601 clip.

Changes: macOS YUV color conversion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frame metadata and texture views
crates/compositor/src/mac_frames.rs, crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs
Frame upload copies color-space metadata to the presentation frame. The compositor creates texture views with matrix and bit-depth markers, and retains the full-range marker on the UV plane. Tests cover selected matrix swizzles.
Metadata-based YUV conversion

Explanation

The title "fix: pick the YCbCr matrix per frame on macOS" matches the main change. The raw summary and objectives show the shader now selects the BT.601/BT.2020 matrix per frame from AVFrame colorspace metadata, instead of always using BT.709 on macOS. The title is specific and short, and it names the platform, the bug type, and the affected behavior.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has a Summary that explains the BT.601/BT.2020 hue bug and the fix. It names the source of the matrix, the shader path, and the opt-in test. It includes measurements and test results under Testing-style content. It states the stacked-PR dependency on #1408 and references #1420. Several template sections are missing or incomplete. The 'Related issue' section uses 'Refs #1420' but the template's 'Fixes #' line is not filled in. The 'Type of change' checkboxes are not ticked, and the 'Release impact' and 'Desktop impact' sections are not marked. The 'Screenshots / video' section is absent. The description also has a 'Measurements' section that is not in the template, and the 'Testing' content is not under a 'Testing' heading. Because the core content is present, the description is mostly complete.

Add a rendered BT.2020 NCL test.

crates/compositor/tests/hevc10_decode.rs:121-128 contains only the BT.601 rendered colour test. No test in crates/compositor/tests/ references BT.2020. The new BT.2020 NCL path therefore has no rendered assertion. A regression in the swizzle selection at crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs:243-245 or in the coefficients at crates/compositor/src/shaders.metal:184-185 would not fail any rendered test.

Add an env-gated test that follows the a_bt601_frame_keeps_its_hues pattern. The test should render a BT.2020 NCL-tagged frame and assert its half colours with assert_halves. Choose a fixture whose expected colours differ between the BT.709 and BT.2020 matrices, so the assertion can detect a wrong matrix selection. The test needs its own environment variable, following the OPENSCREEN_BT601_SOURCE naming.

This comment concerns test coverage only. It does not assess the BT.2020 colour output.

Cover BT.601 matrix selection with a unit test that runs in the macOS CI jobs.

The BT.601 assertion in crates/compositor/tests/hevc10_decode.rs returns early when OPENSCREEN_BT601_SOURCE is unset, and the macOS CI jobs do not set it. No test in the compositor crate tags a frame as BT.601 or checks the matrix_swizzle result for that tag. If the BT.601 arm in matrix_swizzle (crates/compositor/src/compositor_macos.rs:238-243) is removed or broken, the CI test jobs still pass.

Add a unit test in the existing #[cfg(test)] module of compositor_macos.rs. It builds a zeroed AVFrame as the module already does, sets colorspace, and calls matrix_swizzle directly:

#[test]
fn matrix_swizzle_selects_bt601_only_for_601_tags() {
    let mut frame: Box<AVFrame> = Box::new(unsafe { std::mem::zeroed() });

    frame.colorspace = AVColorSpace::AVCOL_SPC_SMPTE170M;
    let bt601 = unsafe { matrix_swizzle(&*frame) };
    assert_eq!(bt601, Some([SWZ_RED, SWZ_ONE, SWZ_ZERO, SWZ_ONE]));

    frame.colorspace = AVColorSpace::AVCOL_SPC_BT709;
    let bt709 = unsafe { matrix_swizzle(&*frame) };
    assert_eq!(bt709, None);
}

This test covers only the tag-to-swizzle mapping. It does not cover the matrix_swizzle call on the render path, and it does not check rendered colors or caller metadata. Keep the fixture-gated pixel test as a local check.

The change adds about 10 lines to an existing test module. It needs no fixture, environment variable, or new helper. The zeroed-frame pattern already appears in the same module and in tests/common/nv12.rs.

sample_yuv always used BT.709, so a BT.601 or BT.2020 VideoToolbox frame rendered with shifted hues. The matrix now comes from AVFrame::colorspace (VideoToolbox does not set kCVImageBufferYCbCrMatrixKey on its buffers) and reaches the shader through the Y plane's swizzle, the same channel as the range marker. BT.709 frames take no view, as before.

Measurement report, Mac mini M1, 40bd5cd vs main (5d82a0c)

Rebased onto main now that #1408 has landed. The two commits from this PR are all that remain.

  • cargo test --release -p openscreen-compositor: 486 lib tests pass, including the new matrix_swizzle_marks_matrix_and_depth, and so do the integration tests. The only failures are the 14 bindgen ffi.rs doctests, which fail identically on main.
  • R4, BT.709 8-bit source (1080p export with webcam, 900 frames): the framemd5 matches main on all 5 runs. Mean time is 4.673 s vs 4.689 s on main (−0.3 %).
  • 10-bit BT.601 limited source (HEVC Main 10, Y codes 940 / 504), before vs after this push: white went from (253, 255, 253) to (255, 255, 255), and gray stayed at 128.

The BT.709 10-bit path (from #1408) still applies 8-bit constants. That was left out of scope.

Add a default-run rendered test for the BT.601 and BT.2020 matrix swizzles.

matrix_swizzle_marks_matrix_and_depth checks only the four arrays that matrix_swizzle returns. It catches a wrong array. It does not call swizzled_view or sample a pixel, so a regression in swizzled_view or in the shader can pass while the arrays stay correct. The rendered BT.601 check, a_bt601_frame_keeps_its_hues, returns early unless OPENSCREEN_BT601_SOURCE is set. No rendered BT.2020 check exists. Add a test that builds a non-neutral BT.601 NV12 frame and a BT.2020 frame, passes them through nv12_srvs and sample_yuv, and asserts the output pixels. Include a 10-bit case. The test must not depend on an environment variable. It still needs a Metal device, as the existing nv12_srvs test does. The FakeFrame::from_planes helper and mac_frames::nv12_pixel_buffer_from_planes already build synthetic frames, so the new test can reuse them.
