Dst fix - #21
Dst fix#21
Conversation
The dst suite replayed differently for one seed because the seed cannot influence construction order: - tunnel.Pool.Select broke equal-Expires ties by map iteration order; pick the lowest tunnel ID instead, matching promoteOutboundLocked. Pool.Clear now returns removed IDs in ascending order. - simnet.Network.Close, ResetLink, and connsLocked sequenced teardown by map order; sort sockets, listeners, and connections (local, remote) first. - simnet blocking ops resolved same-instant races by runtime select order: UDP/TCP reads now prefer delivered data over a deadline or close, writes re-check peer space before reporting a timeout, Accept drains pending before ErrClosed, and DialTCP prefers a completed SYN over ctx cancellation. - Advance now quiesces with synctest.Wait (guarded; outside a bubble the runtime rejects Wait and the plain sleep stands), so callers never sample mid-flight state. - DST_LOG buffered in memory and flushed at cleanup: stderr writes from inside the bubble are syscalls whose completion timing perturbs same-instant wakeup order. - Mesh16's outer result guard was smaller than the inner dial/write/read budgets it wraps; raise 150s to 360s so only a genuine wedge trips it. - An invalid DST_SEED or IVNP_DST_SEED now fails fast instead of silently falling back to the hardcoded seed. - All six dst packages pin GOMAXPROCS(1) and reject a missing GODEBUG=asyncpreemptoff=1 rather than diverging silently. - durable.Mutex, RWMutex, and WaitGroup document their bubble-scoped, non-FIFO contract; Mutex and WaitGroup gain virtual-time advancement tests.
Transport handshake key generation draws crypto/rand — ecdh.X25519 GenerateKey in ssu2/handshake.go and ntcp2/handshake.go. Each draw is an OS entropy syscall inside the synctest bubble, and a goroutine blocked in a syscall is not durably blocked, so wall-clock syscall completion decided same-instant wakeup order: the seed fixed the topology but not the schedule, and the 16-node mesh dial could stall to its deadline. simnet.PinSessionEntropy points crypto/rand.Reader at a ChaCha8 stream keyed by the simulation seed, and SessionEntropySeed resolves that seed from DST_SEED or IVNP_DST_SEED with the same fail-fast parse as the harness. The root harness pins per simulation and restores on cleanup; the three dst packages that exercise the handshake stack pin once in TestMain. Production builds never compile this file, and every call site restores the previous reader.
crypto/rand.Reader must be safe for concurrent use, and transport handshakes read it from several goroutines at once. The pinned ChaCha8 stream is not, so concurrent draws corrupted the stream: the 10-seed CI mirror regressed to 3/10 failures with the raw reader. Wrap it in lockedReader, mirroring foundation's lockedRandomSource, which already serializes ChaCha8 draws for the same reason. With the lock the CI mirror is 0/10 at both the root and sibling commands, and `go test -race` over the mesh tests is clean.

Preserve a fired deadline across re-arming.
Config. Now supplies c.net.now, but simDeadline.arm starts a time.NewTimer and checks expiry only against that custom clock. If Config. Now does not advance with the timer clock, each timer firing can re-arm another positive-duration timer. Read and Write can then wait past their deadlines. Track the fired deadline generation and, after checking for data or space, return the timeout if that generation is still current.

Check the effective asyncpreemptoff value.
asyncpreemptoff=10 does not leave preemption enabled: Go parses the setting as an integer, and a nonzero value disables async preemption. But asyncpreemptoff=1,asyncpreemptoff=0 passes this substring check. Go applies the later value, so the tests can run with async preemption enabled. Parse the setting values and reject an effective zero.

Stock sync.Mutex/RWMutex park on runtime semaphores whose wait reason is not idle in a synctest bubble, which is why internal/durable existed as a channel-based shim. Go 1.27 already parks sync.WaitGroup waits durably via runtime_SemacquireWaitGroup, so tools/dstoverlay now patches the current GOROOT to route contended Mutex and RWMutex waits through the same durable path while the caller is inside a bubble; outside a bubble every patched call keeps stock behavior. - tools/dstoverlay applies anchor-checked patches to runtime/sema.go, internal/sync/mutex.go and sync/rwmutex.go and adds a sync marker constant, so dst tests refuse to compile without -overlay instead of freezing the virtual clock. - The 48 durable call sites become plain sync; internal/durable is deleted (non-dst builds were already type aliases to sync). - CI generates the overlay and passes -overlay to both dst test steps. Measured on seed 1982: 4/20 flake with the overlay vs 2-3/20 before — the residual is runnable-goroutine selection order, not lock waits, so this is a simplification, not a flake fix.

🌐 Web query:
site:go.dev testing/synctest durable blocking sync.Mutex outside bubble Go 1.27
💡 Result:
Yes. **Go 1.27’s `testing/synctest` still does not treat blocking on `sync.Mutex` as durable blocking.** Its docs list locking a `sync.Mutex` or `sync.RWMutex` among operations that may block but aren’t durable, because a goroutine outside the bubble could unblock them. ([go.dev](https://go.dev/pkg/testing/synctest/?m=old&utm_source=openai))
So if a bubble goroutine waits on a mutex held outside the bubble, `synctest` won’t count that wait toward the bubble being durably blocked; it can’t safely assume the mutex will be released by a goroutine in the bubble. The Go 1.27 release notes mention a new `synctest.Sleep` helper, but don’t announce a change to mutex blocking. ([go.dev](https://go.dev/doc/go1.27?utm_source=openai))
**Caveat:** the package docs establish the general mutex rule; they don’t specifically single out the outside-held-mutex case in the Go 1.27 release notes.

Do not mark every in-bubble lock wait as durable.
The generated internal/sync.Mutex and sync.RWMutex paths choose runtime_SemacquireWaitGroup(..., true) based only on whether the waiting goroutine is in a bubble. Go’s testing/synctest contract says these lock waits are not durable because a goroutine outside the bubble can release the lock. When all bubble goroutines are otherwise blocked, this can let a pending virtual timer expire before that release.
Use the durable path only when the lock cannot be released by an outside-bubble goroutine. Otherwise, keep the stock wait. Document and enforce that restriction for dst tests, and audit the global locks they can reach.

Review comment at @tools/dstoverlay/main.go around lines 110 - 124:
Update the generated internal/sync.Mutex and sync.RWMutex wait paths so
synctest.IsInBubble alone does not select runtime_SemacquireWaitGroup; use the
durable wait only when the lock cannot be released by a goroutine outside the
bubble, and retain the stock wait otherwise. Document and enforce this
restriction for dst tests, and audit the global locks those tests can reach.

Three residual nondeterminism sources remained after the durable-sync overlay. Each is patched in tools/dstoverlay (test-only, applied via go test -overlay in dst runs; production builds are unaffected): - runtime/rand.go: seed globalRand from a fixed constant. Select pollorder shuffles (selectgo), map iteration starts (maps_rand), and per-m rand state become process-independent. - runtime/proc.go: sysmon never retakes a P. A P handed off mid-syscall requeues the returning goroutine onto the global run queue, which reorders it relative to the local run queue — a wall-clock input under GOMAXPROCS=1. With retakes gone, in-bubble mutex starvation is also disabled: it keys off real nanotime, another wall-clock input. - crypto/internal/randutil: MaybeReadByte is a no-op. Under GODEBUG=cryptocustomrand=1 it steals a byte from custom readers with 50% probability; dst fixtures pass exactly-sized readers and must observe exact consumption. GODEBUG=cryptocustomrand=1 is required alongside asyncpreemptoff=1: Go 1.27's crypto packages route GenerateKey through crypto/internal/rand.CustomReader, which ignores a swapped crypto/rand.Reader unless that flag is set — pinned session entropy was bypassed for every X25519 key. Test mains fail fast when either setting is missing; CI also sets GOGC=off to keep GC marker goroutines out of the single P's run queue. Two follow-on fixes in code the overlay exposes: - garlic/ecies ratchet: pass crypto/rand.Reader instead of nil to X25519 key generation (nil now panics under cryptocustomrand=1; stock behavior is identical since nil selected the same default). - streaming/tunnel test: yield in select-default spin loops; under GOMAXPROCS=1 with sysmon retakes disabled a bare spin starves the goroutine it waits for. Verification (seed 1982, GOMAXPROCS=1, GODEBUG=asyncpreemptoff=1,cryptocustomrand=1, GOGC=off, overlay): goid execution order identical across processes for the boot test; full CI mirror (10 seeds x root suite + 4 dst packages) passes 20/20 where the pre-overlay tree failed ~15%; worst-seed root-suite flake 4/20 -> 2/20 at seed 1982, 0/20 across the mirror. Full-suite log replay is byte-identical for the boot test; longer meshes still diverge in log order via a residual sub-scheduler wake-order mechanism (not GC, not starvation, not retakes, not runtime randomness).

🌐 Web query:
Go official GODEBUG asyncpreemptoff cryptocustomrand setting parsing values duplicates last value Go 1.27
💡 Result:
In **Go 1.27**, `asyncpreemptoff` and `cryptocustomrand` are separate comma-delimited `GODEBUG` settings. For duplicate keys, **the last occurrence wins**—for example, `GODEBUG=cryptocustomrand=1,cryptocustomrand=0` leaves it set to `0`. The official parser scans settings backward and documents that later settings override earlier ones. ([go.dev](https://go.dev/src/internal/godebug/godebug.go))
`cryptocustomrand=1` makes most crypto APIs honor a supplied random reader; Go 1.26’s default is `0`, which ignores those readers. The Go 1.27 release notes don’t list a change to this setting, so that behavior is documented for Go 1.26 and the current source, rather than as a Go 1.27-specific change. ([go.dev](https://go.dev/doc/godebug))
The sources establish duplicate-value parsing and `cryptocustomrand` behavior. They don’t establish any special interaction between `asyncpreemptoff` and `cryptocustomrand`; they are independent keys.

Validate the effective crypto setting in all five guards.
strings.Contains accepts cryptocustomrand=10 and accepts cryptocustomrand=1,cryptocustomrand=0, even though Go uses the last duplicate value. In both cases, Go can ignore the pinned crypto/rand.Reader, making DST runs nondeterministic.
Use one shared helper from all five TestMains. Require the effective cryptocustomrand value to equal "1". Do not require asyncpreemptoff to equal "1": Go disables async preemption for any valid nonzero int32.

Apply the same guard replacement in `controlplane/internal/router/main_dst_test.go`, `dataplane/internal/router/main_dst_test.go`, `dataplane/internal/streaming/tunnel/main_dst_test.go`, and `internal/simnet/main_dst_test.go`. In `internal/simnet/main_dst_test.go`, call `DSTGODEBUGReady` directly.

Review comment at @sim_main_test.go around lines 29 - 34:
Replace the substring checks in all five TestMain guards with a shared
DSTGODEBUGReady helper that parses GODEBUG entries in order and validates the
effective values: cryptocustomrand must equal "1", while asyncpreemptoff must
parse as a nonzero int32. Call the helper directly from
internal/simnet/main_dst_test.go and from the other four TestMain guards.

Fixes #13: 1. Propagate resolved default network to embedded core: NewEmbeddedRouterNetworks now accepts the resolved def name and validates it against configured specs. router.def no longer defaults to specs[0], so operations like Hash(), WaitReady(), Node().Default(), and router-info export/import use the intended default network. 2. mergedListener fault isolation & resource cleanup: feed() no longer forwards the first sub-listener Accept error directly into the shared channel; errors surface only once all sub-listeners retire. Close() drains and closes buffered accepted connections and returns joined sub-listener close errors. 3. Restore constructor-level datagram protocol-class validation: ListenPacket / PacketConn accepts protocols 17 and 19 only; ListenUnauthPacket / UnauthPacketConn accepts protocols 18 and 20 only. Mismatched combinations are rejected at construction. 4. Eliminate replyScratch data race in GarlicReceiver: Convert replyScratch to *sync.Pool. Handlers capture the pool pointer under lifecycleMu.RLock before unlocking; Put calls target the captured pointer, preventing races with ReleaseSensitive's cleanup. 5. Follow-ups: - validNetworkName: restrict digits to ASCII [0-9]. - validateBootstrap: report priority reseed URL failures under .PriorityReseedURLs[i] with correct per-slice indices. - Workflows: set persist-credentials: false on actions/checkout in all workflows. Targeted tests added for each issue; all pass under -race and full CI mirror.
