Tabs : active element

I have a tab structure like that:

<ul>
    <li>
        <a>
            <img>
        </a>
    </li>
    <li>
        <a>
            <img>
        </a>
    </li>
</ul>

When I click on "img", the "active" class is added on the "a", and when I click on the "a", the "active" class is added on the "li".

The class is always added on the parent element. How do I make sure the element is always on a specific element?
