fix(transport): release disposed SOCKS5 readers and timeout closures - #8142
Fix a SOCKS5 reader disposal race that can retain completed request bodies during long conversations. A partial-frame read can resume after dispose() removed socket listeners, register another waiter/abort listener, and never complete normally. Retained timeout callbacks then provide a path from the socket to the fetch closure and request body.
partial read resolves -> dispose -> queued readUntil resumes
before: registers another waiter on a detached socket
after: observes terminal state and rejects
handshake/response finishes -> remove only its owned timeout callback
Mark the reader terminal after handshake-buffer handoff and before settling waiters; preserve an existing socket failure.
Remove owned handshake/response timeout callbacks on phase completion and terminal paths. Preserve unrelated timeout observers.
Add deterministic reader regressions, real loopback transport cleanup tests, and update the transport contract and both test registries. No new runtime exports, dependencies, configuration, or production instrumentation.
Isolate the existing Claude HTTP test's descendant-free fixture through its owned-process termination hook; retain the 20-second limit and real child-close/PID assertions. A no-op termination control still fails.
The diagnosed OpenCodex 2.93.0 reader source is unchanged on the checked dev base. In two pre-fix idle captures approximately 19 minutes apart, post-GC external memory increased from 55.32 to 445.69 MiB and retained reader/socket pairs from 5 to 84. Post-fix natural workload observations support recovery, but are not an equal-load A/B comparison or proof that every possible leak is eliminated. The linked note preserves those limitations and distinguishes offline graph sizes from actual memory freed.
Verification
Base: bc11b07de5148f6a00ac6465a3aafaaf107e6f89; checked dev is one commit ahead. Validation uses pinned Bun 1.4.4 on Windows, from repository root with the normal wrapper/preload and home/service guards. The same SHA-256 binary is run from an ASCII path, and proxy variables are removed only from test subprocess environments. No production package or service was changed while preparing this PR.
Final affected regression: 441 pass / 0 fail / 0 skip / 0 errors, 41,679 assertions across 22 files, about 97 seconds in the test lane. bun scripts/test.ts --parallel=4 --timeout 60000 <22 explicit files>; the validation report contains the exact file list/command, environment controls, negative control and all broader results. Coverage includes all 15 files from the original 66 failures, the five SOCKS lifecycle files, and the Claude/CodeBuddy adapter neighbors. Explicit case limits, including Claude's 20 seconds, are unchanged.
bun run typecheck — PASS, 2,310 files. bun run privacy:scan, bun scripts/file-size-ratchet.ts, and git diff --check — PASS; no size cap raised. The structure check passed with the runtime fix and owning transport contract, which are unchanged by this validation follow-up.
SOCKS regression signal: before the runtime fix, the two new files gave 3 pass / 10 fail; after it, the five-file set gave 77 pass / 0 fail. The final 441-test run includes those files. The reader test extracts the current private class and statically imports the error class from that same module; it is also explicitly invoked to cover the source-reading seam.
Validation blockers resolved: byte-identical Bun at an ASCII executable path makes the unchanged CodeBuddy MCP file pass 5/0; non-ASCII executable paths reproducibly failed executable-copy ENOENT, independent of entry/output location. The existing Claude HTTP fixture encountered approximately 7.56-second synchronous Windows tree scans; its owned-child hook now preserves real cleanup checks within the original limit. The adjacent set passed 56/0; disabling termination failed the unchanged close-count assertion (3/5).
Historical attempts are retained, not presented as passes: the original changed run timed out at 900 seconds (exit 124, partial 2,553 pass/66 fail lines). Its 66 cases were accounted for in the baseline comparison: 64 recovered with child proxy isolation, while the two blockers above reproduced on base before this follow-up. The layout checks initially gave 28/1 at the default 5-second budget; the unchanged Git-heavy failing case passed with an explicit 60-second budget.
Documented full-local-suite resource exception
bun scripts/test.ts --timeout 60000 was attempted with the same clean environment/ASCII runner and default four workers. Its main lane exceeded the repository's 900-second bound: exit 124, partial 2,224 pass / 28 fail / 48 skip lines, with later serial lanes unreached. The full local suite is not passing.
The seven files containing those 28 failures were compared under the same wrapper/parallelism on unmodified base and PR: base 68 pass / 15 fail / 15 skip + 1 error, PR 72 pass / 11 fail / 15 skip + 1 error. Failures involve existing bounded diagnostic flushing, Windows child/command deadlines, and lifecycle cleanup; both additional errors are the same late key-login assertion. Three initially PR-only observations were investigated: two reproduced on base; the third passes both smaller rechecks and reads persisted records after flush()'s documented one-second non-durable wait. Baseline controlled blocked-ACL tests pass 2/0, confirming that contract. This does not claim that every exact full-run failure reproduced on base, or that every possible ordering regression is excluded.
This uses the explicit resource exception in AGENTS.md/MAINTAINERS.md: the bounded complete attempt was impractical on this host, observed failures were investigated rather than ignored, and the actual changed behavior has completed focused coverage above. Broader whole-suite and ordering/platform coverage remains with hosted CI. Raw logs/heaps/request contents stay local. Independent read-only review found no blocking code, attribution or privacy findings.
Hosted fork workflows require upstream approval; pending, skipped, missing, approval-blocked or older-head checks are not claimed as passing. Required current-head CI and maintainer review remain merge requirements.

Walkthrough
The SOCKS5 reader now treats disposal as terminal before rejecting pending reads. The transport removes owned timeout callbacks at phase and terminal boundaries. New regression tests cover both behaviors. Added reports document validation results, test-environment constraints, and remaining limitations.
Disposal marks the reader ended before rejecting waiters, preserves an existing failure, and clears buffered data. Tests cover pending and later reads, socket failures, and buffered-byte handoff. Documentation and evidence notes record the disposal behavior and heap observations, with stated limitations.
Handshake and response timeout callbacks are named and removed at phase or terminal boundaries. Tests check timeout handling, callback removal across response outcomes, and preservation of unrelated listeners.
Test environment and validation evidence tests/providers/claude-cli-client-http.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json, devlog/_plan/261104_socks5_reader_retention/*
The Claude HTTP fixture uses a handler that terminates its owned child, and the test layout includes the new lifecycle tests. Reports compare selected base and PR test results and describe environment constraints; they do not claim a passing full suite.
The disposal and timeout cleanup changes have no established production regression. Mergeability risk is bounded to reproducibility of the documented test command and reduced Windows termination coverage; both warrant follow-up.

Explanation
The title "fix(transport): release disposed SOCKS5 readers and timeout closures" matches the main change. The socks5-fetch.ts diff makes SocketReader.dispose mark the reader terminal and reject pending reads, and it removes the owned handshake and response timeout listeners. The PR objectives describe the same reader disposal race and timeout callback cleanup. The title names the primary fix without listing files and uses a conventional commit prefix.

Cover the failed SOCKS negotiation path in the timeout cleanup suite.
Every case in tests/lib/socks5-timeout-cleanup.test.ts runs after SOCKS negotiation succeeds. The finally block in socks5Connect (src/lib/socks5-fetch.ts, around lines 274-290) also removes the handshake timeout callback when negotiation fails. No test checks that removal. A change that removes the callback only on success would still pass this suite.
Add a case in which the peer rejects the greeting or closes before the CONNECT reply. Await the rejected response. Assert that a handshake callback with HANDSHAKE_TIMEOUT_MS was registered. Then call assertReleased(owners). Do not await requestSeen in this case. A rejected greeting or CONNECT may never send a request.

Add a failed SOCKS negotiation case to the timeout cleanup suite, using the
existing `withPeer` setup to reject the greeting or close before the CONNECT
reply. Await the rejected response, verify a callback with
`HANDSHAKE_TIMEOUT_MS` was registered, then call `assertReleased(owners)`; do

With the hook, the fixture never runs the default killWindowsProcessTree in src/adapters/coding-agent/turn.ts:61-66. The hook kills the child directly. A no-op taskkill would therefore still pass the child-close and PID assertions on Windows.
No inspected adapter or provider test asserts the default command or its arguments. Add a test that sets platform: "win32", drives the adapter into its termination path, spies on execFileSync through spyOn(childProcess, "execFileSync"), and asserts the taskkill path with ["/PID", String(pid), "/T", "/F"]. Because platform is injected, this test can run on any CI runner. It does not depend on the Windows-only job, which runs only on schedule or manual dispatch.
Correct the fixture comment so it matches this coverage:

Add adapter coverage for the default Windows process-tree termination path

asserted by adapter tests.

Add the proxy-clearing step to the 441-test command.
The displayed command does not clear inherited proxy variables. Only the prose at lines 62-64 states that they must be absent. An inherited SOCKS ALL_PROXY can make command-code-quota.test.ts send real traffic through socks5Fetch, which bypasses the test's stubbed globalThis.fetch. Add an explicit unset step before the command, as the clean-environment launcher in 020-baseline-comparison.md does.

Thanks — the fix itself looks correct to me and the regressions genuinely discriminate. Without the fix, SocketReader.dispose() leaves ended unset, so a readUntil continuation that resumes after disposal parks a new anyWaiter and abort listener on a socket whose listeners are already gone. socket.setTimeout(0) also leaves the owned timeout callback attached. With the fix, dispose() marks the reader terminal only after the handshake unshift check (src/lib/socks5-fetch.ts:255-266) and keeps an earlier socket failure as the reason. The owned handshake/response timeout callbacks are removed on every terminal path (:288, :434, :454, :743). Without the fix, socks5-reader-lifecycle.test.ts sees the pending outcome and socks5-timeout-cleanup.test.ts sees the retained handshake callback, so both fail.
Non-blocking items before merge:
tests/lib/socks5-timeout-cleanup.test.ts:140-147: the new finally in socks5Connect (src/lib/socks5-fetch.ts:282-289) also removes onHandshakeTimeout when negotiation fails, but every case in this suite completes SOCKS negotiation first. On dev that failure path called socket.destroy() without removing the callback, so a regression to success-only cleanup would still pass. Please add a withPeer variant where the peer answers the greeting with [5, 0xff] (or ends before the CONNECT reply). Await the rejected response without waiting on requestSeen, assert that a HANDSHAKE_TIMEOUT_MS owner was recorded, and call assertReleased(owners).
tests/providers/claude-cli-client-http.test.ts:32-39: injecting killWindowsProcessTree is a Windows timing workaround unrelated to the SOCKS5 change. On the Linux PR lane it is never invoked (src/adapters/coding-agent/turn.ts:421 only dispatches on win32). On Windows it removes the real taskkill path from this integration test. Please move it to a separate test(...) PR so it can be judged on its own, or keep it here only if a maintainer agrees to.
devlog/_plan/261104_socks5_reader_retention/030-validation-environment.md:63-67: the open CodeRabbit thread is valid. The text says proxy variables are absent from the child environment, but the command shown does not remove them, so someone with an inherited ALL_PROXY would not reproduce the 441/0 result. Please add the env-clearing step (or reference the launcher in 020-baseline-comparison.md), or reply on the thread. The readiness checkbox says all correct findings are resolved.
