Problem

  • stream.headers of a node:quic stream is undefined after the stream closes, one event-loop turn after a response ends. An unsent stream.pendingTrailers is lost too.
  • The cause is QuicStream[kFinishClose] (src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts:2518). It sets inner.headers and inner.pendingTrailers to undefined.
  • Node removed both assignments in quic: correct http3 callback and fix revealed errs nodejs/node#64289 (v26.6.0). Node 26.12.1 keeps both values in the same script (Notes).

Fix

  • Delete the two assignments. A closed stream keeps both values.
  • Only the getters read these fields after the close. [kTrailers] still clears a block that it sent.
  • Verified: test/js/node/quic/quic-stream.test.ts (two new tests that fail without the fix). Also test/js/node/quic/, the vendored test-quic-* files (234 of 235 pass, see Notes), serve-http3.test.ts and fetch-http3-client.test.ts.
  • Self-reviewed: 24 concerns raised, 19 addressed, 5 not followed (Notes).

Background

Downsides

  • A caller that keeps a closed stream keeps its header block: 317 bytes more JS heap per stream for 8 header fields (debug build). A dropped stream is collected as before.
  • Bun does not send pendingTrailers without onwanttrailers, or after setBody(bytes). After a clean close such a stream reads the unsent block. Node sends it and reads undefined.
Notes

Landing order. #46528 changes the same two files, and its head 7242738 still has both assignments (quic.ts:2625-2626). A trial merge of this branch with that head has no conflict. I built fcc81bd of that branch with the first commit of this PR on top: the two new tests fail without the two-line change and pass 20 of 20 runs with it, and the whole file passes (110 tests). The change is offered on #46528 as a fold (comment). If it goes in there, this PR closes.

Origin. Found while reading the code for #46798, whose notes list it as handed off. No user reported it and no issue exists. CI saw it once, on a branch: build 102986 of #40021, which changes the event-loop scope on Windows, failed test-quic-h3-request-response.mjs, test-quic-h3-trailing-headers.mjs and test-quic-h3-informational-headers.mjs on both Windows lanes with TypeError: undefined is not an object (evaluating 'stream.headers[":status"]'). These three vendored files read stream.headers right after the body. A caller can avoid the bug today by keeping the block that onheaders gets.

When the headers go away. On Bun 1.4.3-canary.1, over 300 loopback streams, stream.headers was still set directly after the for await read loop ended (300 of 300) and was undefined one setImmediate later (300 of 300).

Node 26.12.1. Official Node binaries have no node:quic. The Node rows below come from Node 26.12.1's own QUIC sources (src/quic, ngtcp2, nghttp3, lib/internal/quic), built out of tree and loaded into the official 26.12.1 binary. Node's 35 test-quic-h3-* files pass on that setup. The script is the same file on each runtime:

after-close.mjs
import { createPrivateKey } from "node:crypto";
import { readFileSync } from "node:fs";
import { connect, listen } from "node:quic";
const dir = "test/js/node/test/fixtures/keys/";
const key = createPrivateKey(readFileSync(dir + "agent1-key.pem"));
const cert = readFileSync(dir + "agent1-cert.pem");
const served = Promise.withResolvers();
const server = await listen(
  async s => {
    s.onstream = st => st.closed.catch(() => {});
    await s.closed.catch(() => {});
  },
  {
    sni: { "*": { keys: [key], certs: [cert] } },
    onheaders() {
      served.resolve(this);
      this.sendHeaders({ ":status": "200", "x-served-by": "test" }, { terminal: true });
    },
  },
);
const client = await connect(server.address, { servername: "localhost", verifyPeer: "manual" });
await client.opened;
const request = { ":method": "GET", ":path": "/", ":scheme": "https", ":authority": "localhost" };
const st = await client.createBidirectionalStream({ headers: request, onheaders() {} });
const serverStream = await served.promise;
await Promise.all([st.closed, serverStream.closed]);
console.log("client stream after close:", JSON.stringify({ destroyed: st.destroyed, headers: st.headers }));
console.log("server stream after close:", JSON.stringify({ destroyed: serverStream.destroyed, headers: serverStream.headers }));

// A stream destroyed before its body ends keeps the trailers it did not send.
const second = await client.createBidirectionalStream({ onheaders() {} });
second.closed.catch(() => {});
second.sendHeaders({ ...request, ":method": "POST" });
second.pendingTrailers = { "x-checksum": "abc123" };
second.destroy();
console.log("destroyed before the body ended:", JSON.stringify({ destroyed: second.destroyed, pendingTrailers: second.pendingTrailers }));
await client.close();
await server.close();
client headers after closed server headers after closed pendingTrailers after destroy()
Node 26.12.1 {":status":200,"x-served-by":"test"} the request block {"x-checksum":"abc123"}
Node 26.12.1, the two assignments put back undefined undefined undefined
Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 undefined undefined undefined
This PR {":status":"200","x-served-by":"test"} the request block {"x-checksum":"abc123"}

With the two assignments put back, Node's own test-quic-h3-request-response.mjs and test-quic-h3-informational-headers.mjs fail with TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ':status'). :status is a number in Node since nodejs/node#63589 and a string in Bun. That difference is not part of this PR, and the new test does not depend on it.

pendingTrailers after the close. A server stream sets pendingTrailers and answers. Each row is the first response on a new connection. The value is read after both ends closed.

response onwanttrailers Node 26.12.1 Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 This PR
headers with terminal: true set or not not sent, block kept not sent, undefined not sent, block kept
writer body set sent, undefined sent, undefined sent, undefined
writer body not set sent, undefined not sent, undefined not sent, block kept
setBody(bytes) set or not sent, undefined not sent, undefined not sent, block kept
destroy() after the headers set or not not sent, block kept not sent, undefined not sent, block kept

In rows 3 and 4 Bun does not send the trailers, before or after this PR. The send half of Node's updateHeaderInterest (nodejs/node#65863) is not ported, as the notes of #46798 say. After this PR the getter shows that the block was not sent. The rows become undefined when the send half is ported. The setter throws ERR_INVALID_THIS on a closed stream in Node and in Bun, so a kept block cannot be replaced.

Left out. QuicStreamState[kFinishClose] (src/js/internal/quic/state.ts:876-879) still drops the state buffer. So stream.pending reads undefined on a closed stream, where Node 26.12.1 reads false. In quic.ts itself no other reset differs: of every inner.X = undefined and this.#X = undefined statement, these two are the only ones that Node's file (main, 91c4436158) does not have.

Self-review. Five recommendations are not followed:

Tests.

  • The two new tests fail on Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 and on a debug build with src/ from main. They pass with the fix in 60 of 60 repeated runs.
  • test/js/node/quic/: 35 tests pass.
  • Vendored test/js/node/test/parallel/test-quic-*: 234 of 235 pass on the debug build. test-quic-session-initial-rtt.mjs fails with and without the fix on a debug build (smoothed RTT of 39 to 79 ms against a bound of 10 ms). It passes on the release build.
  • No vendored Node test changes from fail to pass.

Measurements. A client sends 1,000 requests on one session. The server answers each with 8 header fields and no body. JS heap is heapStats().heapSize after a full GC, on one debug binary with and without the two lines.

  • The script keeps every closed client stream: 2,100 to 2,106 bytes for each stream without the fix, 2,418 to 2,422 bytes with the fix (three runs each).
  • The script keeps only WeakRefs: 1 of 1,000 client streams and 0 of 1,000 server streams are alive after the GC, with and without the fix.

QuicStream's close path cleared the received headers and the unsent
pendingTrailers, so `stream.headers` was undefined once the stream
closed. Node stopped clearing both in v26.6.0 (nodejs/node#64289).

Status: the change is complete. It is also offered on #46528 as a fold (comment). If it goes in there, this PR closes.

Reproduced on Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 (367d939) with the script in the Notes of the description. After await stream.closed, stream.headers is undefined on the client stream and on the server stream. An unsent stream.pendingTrailers is undefined after destroy(). Node 26.12.1's QUIC code keeps all three values in the same script, and so does this branch.

Tests: the two new tests in test/js/node/quic/quic-stream.test.ts fail on Bun 1.4.3-canary.1 and on a debug build with src/ from main. They pass on a debug build of this branch.

Walkthrough

The QUIC stream close path no longer clears cached headers or pending trailers. Tests check retained state after close and verify when pending trailers are cleared after delivery.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether stream.pendingTrailers = undefined throwing on a closed stream is new — it is not: the setter at src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts:1954 goes through assertHeadersSupported(inner.session) with inner.session already nulled in [kFinishClose], which is the same pre-PR path and matches Node. The new tests' cleanup shape (await using server plus a manual client.close()) mirrors the existing tests in the same file, and [kTrailers]() still early-returns on destroyed, so a kept block is never sent after close.

Extended reasoning...

The change deletes two assignments in QuicStream[kFinishClose] so a closed node:quic stream keeps its received headers and unsent pendingTrailers, matching Node v26.6.0+, and adds two tests in the existing quic-stream test file. It touches no security-sensitive surface. The one confirmed finding is a pre-existing gap (trailers never sent without onwanttrailers) that this PR makes more visible rather than introduces, so a human should weigh whether that belongs here.

Comment thread src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts
A failure before client.close() left the client session open, so the
server's disposal waited for the idle timeout (about 1 s) before the
test reported its error.

Both review findings are answered in their threads.

  • Test cleanup. Applied in 303ceec. Both new tests close the client in a finally, so a failure reports at once and not after the idle timeout.
  • pendingTrailers without onwanttrailers sends no trailers. This is older than this PR, and this PR has no code change for it. On main the send half would give some streams a wrong body, because of an lsquic defect that patches/lsquic/headers-after-buffered-body.patch on http: consolidate the open fetch, Bun.serve, node:http, node:http2 and HTTP/3 pull requests #46528 repairs. The thread has the numbers.

LGTM — a two-line deletion in QuicStream[kFinishClose] so a closed stream keeps headers and pendingTrailers, with tests that exercise it.

What was reviewed:

  • Every reader of inner.headers / inner.pendingTrailers after close: only the two getters and [kInspect] (which does not touch them); [kTrailers] still clears a block it sent, and the pendingTrailers setter still goes through assertHeadersSupported, so no new path writes to a dead stream.
  • The tests fail without the fix for the right reason: destroy() runs [kFinishClose] synchronously, so the destroyed-client case reads the field after the teardown; the headers test compares both ends against the actual received blocks, not just non-undefined.
  • Grepped the suite for assertions on the old cleared-after-close behavior — none; the vendored test-quic-h3-* files read stream.headers after the body, consistent with the new behavior.
  • The follow-up commit's try/finally client.close() sits before the assertions can fail, matching the file's cleanup convention.
Extended reasoning...

The PR removes two assignments from the stream-close finalizer in src/js/internal/quic/quic.ts (lines 2518-2519 of the base) and adds a "a closed stream" describe block with two tests in test/js/node/quic/quic-stream.test.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface; the retained values are header objects already exposed to the same caller via onheaders. The change is small, self-contained, matches the Node behavior the vendored Node tests in this repo already rely on, and the only third-party inline comment was followed by a commit that added the cleanup it most plausibly asked for; no CHANGES_REQUESTED review is outstanding and the files are not under CODEOWNERS.

Closing: this change is in #46528 as of 07bcf8a, with both tests. That commit has the tests as they are in b398638, so the finally cleanup of 303ceec is not in it. I reported that on #46528. The send half of updateHeaderInterest stays out of #46528.
