Problem

The UI text was hardcoded English everywhere — no i18n library, no message catalogs, no language setting. Non-English users had no way to use T3 Code in their own language.

How this fixes it

A lightweight, dependency-free i18n layer (~40 lines of core logic):

  • English message keys are the source of truth and fully typed (MessageKey); other locales map onto them and fall back to English per key, so a partially translated locale still renders
  • Message catalogs are grouped by domain file (messages.ts, messagesSettingsNav.ts, messagesTypography.ts), so panels can be translated independently without merge pressure
  • A uiLanguage client setting (system / en / zh-Hans) persists through the existing client-settings pipeline (web localStorage / desktop settings file); system resolves against the device locale client-side, Chinese variants map to zh-Hans
  • A language picker lands in Settings → Appearance, and <html lang> follows the resolved locale for accessibility and font shaping
  • First translated batch: the Appearance interface section, the settings shell (sidebar nav, group headings, breadcrumb, command-palette settings entries), the typography panel, and the thread details row. Search keeps matching on English titles (searchTerms stay English); the language search entry also accepts Chinese keywords

Verification

  • vp run typecheck for contracts / client-runtime / web: all green
  • Focused unit tests: 61 passed (including a guard that every zh-Hans key covers the English catalog)
  • vp lint, vp format --check, knip: clean
  • Verified in a real client: switching language re-renders instantly, persists across reload, and <html lang> flips between en and zh-Hans

Before (English):

before

After (Simplified Chinese, same panel):

after

After (settings sidebar nav & breadcrumb):

nav

  • 词典按功能域拆分文件(messages.ts / messagesSettingsNav.ts / messagesTypography.ts),各面板可独立翻译、互不冲突

Takeover verification

Merged current main without rebasing, preserving theme-aware environment identification. The advanced code-font row now uses its existing translated title and reset label.

Blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, 101 tests, and React Compiler checks. GitHub CI passed. Chrome verification covered language switching, document language, reload persistence, separate fonts, prompt size, and the translated reset label. Desktop native and mobile clients were not exercised.

The UI text was hardcoded English everywhere: no i18n library, no
message catalogs, no language setting, and every surface rendered
English strings directly, so non-English users had no way to use T3
Code in their own language.

This adds a lightweight, dependency-free i18n layer: English message
keys are the source of truth (typed), other locales map onto them and
fall back per key, and catalogs are grouped by domain file so panels
can be translated independently. A uiLanguage client setting
(system / English / Simplified Chinese) persists through the existing
client settings pipeline, a language picker lands in
Settings > Appearance, and <html lang> follows the resolved locale.
The Appearance interface section, the settings shell (sidebar nav,
breadcrumb, command palette settings entries), the typography panel,
and the thread details row are translated to Simplified Chinese as
the first batch.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The settings UI now defaults to the system language, automatically switching Chinese locales—including Traditional Chinese—to Simplified Chinese. Human review is required for this product-default change; an unresolved separate-font regression is also independently blocking.

Comment thread apps/web/src/appInit.tsx Resolved
The first commit was built from a stale source snapshot, so several
files silently reverted recent upstream work - most notably the
separate-fonts handling in startClientAppearance, which broke
typecheck (missing required 'separate' in AppearanceFontPreferences)
and made the Separate fonts setting stop affecting the composer font
and prompt size.

This restores every file to the current upstream main and reapplies
only the i18n changes on top: the uiLanguage setting, the language
picker, translated settings chrome (sidebar nav, breadcrumb, command
palette entries), and the translated Appearance, typography, and
thread-details rows. Repo-wide typecheck passes again and the
settings-search, command-palette, and i18n tests stay green.

Localize the reset control strings.

When the locale is zh-Hans, title is translated here, but SettingResetButton still builds its aria-label and tooltip from hard-coded English strings. The reset control therefore exposes mixed-language UI. Pass translated reset strings or extend SettingResetButton to accept a complete accessible name and tooltip.

The reset button built its aria-label from a hard-coded English
template and defaulted its tooltip to English, so a translated row
title (zh-Hans) rendered mixed-language controls like
'Reset 界面字体 to default'. Both strings now come from the message
catalog; English output is byte-identical to the old templates.

Re-reviewed fe04368 and fixed the remaining Minor in 53cf71e: SettingResetButton now takes its aria-label and tooltip from the message catalog (settings.layout.resetToDefault, settings.layout.resetToDefaultShort), so translated row titles no longer render mixed-language reset controls. English output is byte-identical to the previous hard-coded templates, and no call site needed changes.

Reset buttons in already-translated panels passed hard-coded English
labels, so zh-Hans rendered mixed-language aria labels like 'Reset
contrast to default' under a translated row title. The translated
panels (appearance interface, typography, thread details) now pass
catalog labels; English output is byte-identical to the previous
literals. Untouched panels keep their English labels until their own
translation pass.

Re-reviewed 53cf71e and fixed the label side in 7985551: the reset buttons in the already-translated panels (appearance interface, typography, thread details) now pass catalog labels instead of hard-coded English literals. Scope note: panels that have not been translated yet (project defaults, integrations, branch naming, etc.) keep their English labels on purpose - the whole panel is still English, so localizing only the reset label there would trade one mixed-language surface for another. Those labels get catalog entries when each panel gets its own translation pass.

Merged current main without rebasing and preserved its theme-aware environment description. Fixed the remaining advanced code-font title and reset-label translation using the existing catalog key. The separate-font regression was already corrected in the contributor's head; Chrome verification confirms prompt size persists after reload.

b32dd180e7: Blacksmith check:changed passes, including 101 tests; GitHub CI passes; no conflicts. Both independent code reviews found no blockers. Before/after captures and language-switch recording are in the PR body. The existing system-language default remains for Maria's product review.

Desktop: system always resolves to English in the packaged app

Thanks for this, the per-domain catalogs look easy to extend. One gap on desktop:

getUiLocale() resolves the system setting from navigator.language:

return resolveUiLocale(getClientSettings().uiLanguage, navigator.language);

In the packaged desktop app, navigator.language is always en-US. The build ships only the en-US Chromium locale pak (DESKTOP_ELECTRON_LANGUAGES in scripts/build-desktop-artifact.ts), as the getSystemLocale doc comment in packages/contracts/src/ipc.ts explains. So with uiLanguage: "system" on a Chinese macOS or Windows install, the desktop app should stay in English and keep <html lang="en"> (startDocumentLanguage() reads the same value), while the browser build switches to zh-Hans. This is the same root cause as #6178, fixed for timestamps in #6190.

I found this by reading the code and have not run a packaged build. To confirm: package the desktop app, set the OS language to Chinese, and leave Language on "System default".

A minimal fix reuses the bridge method that #6190 added, the way apps/web/src/timestampFormat.ts already reads it:

function readSystemLocale(): string {
  return window.desktopBridge?.getSystemLocale() ?? navigator.language;
}

export function getUiLocale(): UiLocale {
  return resolveUiLocale(getClientSettings().uiLanguage, readSystemLocale());
}

One caveat: getSystemLocale() describes regional formats, not the display language. On Windows it follows the regional format setting, and on Linux the desktop app reads LC_ALL/LC_TIME/LANG, so a user with an English display language and a Chinese region would get Chinese. app.getPreferredSystemLanguages() is the exact source for the UI language but needs a new bridge method. The change above matches what timestamps already do.

Happy to open a follow-up PR with this change if that helps.

Packaged builds ship only the en-US Chromium locale pak, so
navigator.language is pinned to en-US and the "system" language setting
stayed English. Expose app.getPreferredSystemLanguages() over the desktop
bridge and read it once in the web i18n layer, with navigator.language as
the browser fallback. This avoids using regional-format locales as the UI
language.

@devohmycode thanks for the detailed diagnosis — confirmed. I went with the exact source you pointed to instead of getSystemLocale(), so regional-format settings no longer leak into the UI language:

  • Added a getPreferredSystemLanguages() sync bridge method (app.getPreferredSystemLanguages() in the main process, new desktop:get-preferred-system-languages channel, preload + DesktopBridge contract).
  • getUiLocale() now reads the first preferred display language once at startup (cached, since it feeds a useSyncExternalStore snapshot on every render) and falls back to navigator.language in the browser build. That also avoids a sync IPC call per render.
  • Added a focused ElectronApp test for the new service method.

Verification: tsc --noEmit for contracts / client-runtime / web / desktop, 12 focused ElectronApp + i18n tests, the 18 tests around the touched ElectronApp mocks, and vp fmt --check all pass. I could not produce a packaged desktop build in this environment, so the OS-language end-to-end check is still worth a manual pass on a Chinese-locale install.

I continued this localization on top of feat/i18n-zh-hans (b32dd18), using the same per-domain catalog pattern.

Branch: https://github.com/Javey-Li/t3code/tree/feat/i18n-zh-hans-continued
Diff against this PR's head: wxk66/t3code@feat/i18n-zh-hans...Javey-Li:t3code:feat/i18n-zh-hans-continued

What it adds:

  • Desktop: system now reads window.desktopBridge.getSystemLocale() before navigator.language, the fix devohmycode suggested above (same approach as timestampFormat.ts).
  • Translated settings panels: General, Chat, Diffs & pull requests, and Threads (new-thread defaults, snooze editor, title instructions, response streaming).
  • Shared settings pieces: the scope bar, the Advanced fold, Restore device defaults, and a shared "Mixed" label.
  • New catalogs: messagesGeneral, messagesChat, messagesDiffs, messagesThreads, messagesRuntime. English output is unchanged.

Left out on purpose:

  • Snooze preview labels ("In 1 hour", "Tomorrow") come from the shared snooze logic that chat and mobile menus use.
  • The chat composer still uses its own permission and workspace labels. The new runtimeMode.* and envMode.* keys are ready for that pass.

Verification: vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests, React Compiler), and ProjectSettingsPanel.browser.test.tsx passes 22/22. I checked each panel in a dev web client with Simplified Chinese selected. I did not run a packaged desktop build.

@wxk66 @maria-rcks How would you like this to land? I can open a PR into wxk66's branch so it ships with #27965, or wait for #27965 to merge and then open focused PRs against main (one for the desktop locale fix, one per panel).

Pushed the full remaining pass to Javey-Li:t3code@e250e15f05, on top of b32dd180e7.

Scope is now the whole web/desktop UI, not just the settings panels: chat, review, files, preview, pull requests, every settings area, onboarding, the command palette, the sidebar, and the app chrome. That is 416 files and about 4.7k catalog entries across eight new catalog files (messagesAppA, messagesAppB, messagesChatUi, messagesReview, messagesSettingsCode, messagesSettingsProviders, messagesSettingsSystem, messagesMisc). English output is unchanged.

Two shared changes are worth reviewing closely:

  • useT() now returns one cached translator per locale. t stays referentially stable, so it can safely appear in effect dependency lists instead of forcing an effect to re-run on every render.
  • The client-settings snapshot moved into apps/web/src/hooks/clientSettingsStore.ts, with useSettings re-exporting it. Once toasts started translating, useSettings → toast → useI18n → useSettings became an import cycle and broke suites with Cannot access 'twMerge' before initialization; the snapshot module breaks that cycle.

Verification on e250e15f05: vp fmt --check, lint, knip, and web typecheck pass; the i18n catalog coverage test passes; 274 settings/hooks unit tests pass; ProjectSettingsPanel.browser.test.tsx passes 22/22. I did not produce a packaged desktop build, so the OS-language path is not re-tested end to end.

One merge note: this branch still resolves the system locale through getSystemLocale(). Your f2f32e350e replaced that with getPreferredSystemLanguages() (the more accurate source for display language), so when this lands, keep your implementation and drop the readSystemLocale helper from this branch.

Still open from my earlier comment: should this go in as a PR into wxk66:feat/i18n-zh-hans, or wait for #27965 to merge and then send focused PRs against main?

Synced to a37a027 and pushed 148f98c to Javey-Li:t3code. I kept your getPreferredSystemLanguages implementation and dropped the older getSystemLocale helper. Also translated the new surfaces that came in with the merge. Format, lint, knip, web typecheck, the i18n coverage test, and 305 settings/chat/sidebar tests pass. Still waiting on how you want this to land.
