Problem

On the folded iPhone Duo, the terminal keyboard toolbar stopped 84 points short of the screen edge because the terminal route inherited the native rail's horizontal safe area. The keyboard filled that strip, leaving the toolbar visibly cut short.

Change

Let only the terminal route fill its native column. Keep the terminal body and closed-keyboard controls inside their existing horizontal safe area, and let the keyboard toolbar extend across the column. In tall Duo columns, its controls use the free rail space while respecting native occlusions at the toolbar's height. Short landscape columns retain rail clearance so the floating native tabs cannot cover the arrows. The occlusion check follows the same live animated translation as the toolbar, including keyboard and column changes without another show event.

Arrow input, Esc, modifier latches, keyboard dismissal, terminal sizing, and provider/RPC behavior retain their existing paths. Other screens keep their safe-area wrappers. Web/desktop and Android use unchanged layout paths; this cosmetic fix needs no documentation update.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused correction to an obvious visual defect in the existing native terminal, eligible under the focused bug-fix exception. Searches found no matching open issue or PR. The reference report remains private; the evidence below uses isolated demo data.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, knip, and affected mobile/scripts typechecks. Lint reports existing warnings in the touched files.
  • vp run lint:mobile passed. Existing terminal input, paste, grid-sync, device-type, and reserved-region tests passed: 20 tests across five focused files. No layout-prop test added.
  • Used test-t3-mobile, the Device panel, a verified native client, and an isolated backend with demo fixtures. Folded Duo portrait: the dismiss control is reachable at x=439, beyond the old 382-point content boundary; terminal width remains 45 columns. Checked keyboard dismissal/reopening, arrows, Esc, modifier input, folding/unfolding with the keyboard open, and the thread sidebar.
  • Duo captures confirm the 466×678 cover, 678×466 cover landscape, 951×669 inner landscape, and 669×951 inner portrait layouts. Compact landscape preserves clearance beside the floating native tabs. CoreDevice hinge-angle telemetry is unavailable in this toolchain (Unknown option '--device'); active-panel dimensions confirm the display changes. The Duo's physical display rotation was exercised through Device Hub because the XCTest orientation setter did not rotate the windowed scene.
  • Checked keyboard shown, hidden, and reopened on iPhone SE (3rd generation), 12 mini, 17 Pro, and 18 Pro Max, including dark and light appearance. Checked iPad Pro 13-inch in 1032×1376 portrait and 1376×1032 landscape. Android runtime verification was unnecessary: its toolbar and IME layout are unchanged by the iOS-only guards.

Review follow-up: rechecked both folded landscape rail positions, unfolded portrait, and keyboard-open fold/rotation transitions. Verified the full-width dismiss control and Ctrl-L input, then dismissed and reopened the keyboard in a native demo recording. Device Hub resize mode resets the keyboard, so arbitrary resizing with it kept open was not verified.

Matched native captures: same demo terminal, dark appearance, 466×678, folded portrait, keyboard shown.

Before After
Before: the terminal keyboard toolbar ends before the Duo rail After: the toolbar fills the width and its dismiss control reaches the free rail strip

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at f91ba9f

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused mobile layout correction that extends the existing iOS terminal keyboard toolbar into the Duo rail while preserving safe-area and occlusion handling. It is isolated to the terminal route and does not change terminal operations, APIs, schemas, or other platform paths.

Walkthrough

The ThreadTerminal route disables native horizontal content insets. The terminal body and keyboard controls apply iOS safe-area insets. In qualifying narrow columns, the keyboard accessory adjusts its horizontal padding for overlapping reserved occlusions.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the Duo terminal keyboard toolbar now extends across the rail in the mobile app. The raw summary covers the terminal route's safe-area and toolbar changes in ThreadTerminalRouteScreen.tsx and the Stack.tsx screen options, so the title matches the changeset. It uses the conventional commit format and is specific enough for a teammate to scan.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's sections: Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification. The Problem and Change sections are clear and specific. The Scope section gives an eligibility argument under the focused bug-fix exception and states that no matching open issue or PR was found. The Verification section is detailed. It lists the commands run, the devices checked, observed results, and what was not verified. It includes before/after screenshots for the UI change and a recording link. The template also asks for the model and harness, and the description includes them. The author's own statement that the reference report is private, and the evidence uses demo data, is noted. The objectives comments report that native Duo behavior was not verified in later attempts. That is a concern for the reviewer, but it does not make the description incomplete. The description is mostly complete.

merged main (3368dd70f2) into the existing contributor branch without rebasing, in 9dd406f29b79445c2b9453b2241a0b0881e39611. resolved the adjacent insertion by preserving the live toolbar clearance and main's useSoftKeyboardShowing dismissal hook. the diff remains two files, 62 additions and 9 deletions. the previous bot finding remains addressed by the live keyboard translation.

blacksmith verification passed: vp run check:changed (format, lint, knip, mobile/scripts typechecks, react compiler coverage) and 28 existing terminal input, paste, and menu tests. two independent code reviews found no issues in this head.

native ios duo rail coverage, compact landscape clearance, rotation, and keyboard interactions remain unverified. device discovery returned Agent device access is turned off for this environment. chrome cannot execute this native path. no fresh screenshots or recording are claimed. verification needs an accessible native ios duo client running this head. no dev servers are retained.

Verified in a real dev environment

none of the changed runtime behavior could be exercised on this linux boat vm. inspected the description, full two-file diff, commits, and discussion at head 485b88c4e494d51e55c6520021d3420b64ad4884. the pr is open, and its three pr commits are by PixPMusic and maria-rcks, with no commits by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. git.cafe reports 28 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending; these are ci results, not runtime proof.

Not verified

the ios terminal toolbar extension across the duo rail, live keyboard/column occlusion clearance, terminal body safe area, compact landscape clearance, rotation/folding, arrows, esc, modifier latches, and keyboard dismissal/reopening remain unverified at this head.

this vm runs linux x86_64 and has no xcrun. t3 device discovery returned exactly: Agent device access is turned off for this environment. the changed screen uses native ios workspace-column metrics and keyboard animation; desktop chrome, including mobile viewport emulation, cannot execute that path. a web codex turn would not verify it.

main reproduction and fresh native before/after screenshots or recording were therefore not possible. no dev server was started, no provider turns were submitted, and no code, branches, labels, or existing processes were changed. prior author captures were not reused as fresh evidence. verification requires an accessible ios duo device or simulator, followed by the same real terminal flow on main and this exact head.

Verified on Android emulator (API 35) against a real dev server

not performed. the verification brief explicitly requires stopping before checkout or startup when the change is ios-only. inspected the full two-file diff, description, discussion, review replies, and three pr commits at 485b88c4e494d51e55c6520021d3420b64ad4884. the pr is open; its commits are by PixPMusic and maria-rcks, with none by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg.

the changed behavior is ios-only: nativeContentInsetHorizontally is consumed by the ios stack/column navigators; terminal body horizontal padding is guarded by Platform.OS === "ios"; the new animated accessory padding returns zero on android. android does render the shared toolbar, but cannot reproduce the ios duo rail/safe-area defect or exercise the changed occlusion calculation.

t3 device discovery now reports android available and the t3 avd present. device access is not the blocker. no emulator, dev server, metro, installation, provider turn, or screenshot capture was started because the ios-only stop condition applies. no runtime evidence is claimed. git.cafe reports 28 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending; those results are not runtime verification.

Not verified

ios cannot run here: device discovery reports iOS Simulators need macOS with Xcode. the duo toolbar width, live occlusion clearance, compact landscape, fold/rotation, terminal body safe area, and keyboard/control interactions remain unverified at this head. android runtime and neighboring behavior were not exercised under the explicit stop condition. no fresh before/after screenshots or recording exist from this pass.

verification requires a real ios duo device or simulator running this exact head against an isolated real dev server. no code, branch, labels, or other pr was changed.

Verified in a real dev environment

no changed runtime behavior could be exercised in this pass. read the description, two-file diff, commits, and discussion for head 485b88c4e494d51e55c6520021d3420b64ad4884. github reports the pr open, with commits by PixPMusic and maria-rcks, and none by juliusmarminge or t3dotgg. git.cafe reports 28 successful checks, zero failing and zero pending. these checks do not prove runtime behavior.

Not verified

the native ios duo terminal toolbar width, live keyboard/column occlusion clearance, safe-area preservation, compact landscape clearance, fold/rotation transitions, arrows, esc, modifier latches, and keyboard dismissal/reopening remain unverified.

this machine is linux x86_64, has no xcrun, and the device discovery call returned Agent device access is turned off for this environment. chrome cannot execute the native ios workspace-column and keyboard path. the mobile verification skill requires stopping when device access is unavailable.

main reproduction, pr runtime verification, real provider turns through that client, and fresh before/after captures or recording were therefore not performed. no dev server was started and no existing processes, source files, branches, labels, or other prs were changed. prior author evidence was not reused as proof of this pass. verification needs an accessible native ios duo device or simulator, running main and then this exact head against isolated real dev state.

Preserve safe-area insets for terminal fallback views.

When the workspace root is missing, ThreadTerminal returns its unavailable view before applying the new padding at Lines 887–888. That view can render under the Duo rail. The route-level unavailable view has the same gap. Apply horizontal safe-area padding to these fallback views while keeping the toolbar full-width. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
