On macOS and Windows, checkpoint capture stages with git -c core.fsyncMethod=batch add. In batch mode Git writes new objects into objects/tmp_objdir-bulk-fsync-* and only moves them into place when the add finishes. When the add is killed, whether by VcsProcess's 30s timeout or by interruption, Git leaves that directory behind. A plain SIGTERM does it too, so a longer grace period wouldn't help.
In a workspace whose capture always times out (a large untracked tree in a repo with no commits), every turn leaked a full copy of the untracked files. On my machine that was 357 directories and about 145 GB in one day, until the disk filled up. The server trace showed 288 VcsProcessTimeoutErrors from GitVcsDriver.checkpoints.captureCheckpoint for that workspace.
Change
Staging runs with GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY set to a per-capture t3-checkpoint-objects-<uuid> directory in the git common dir. The repository's objects stay reachable through GIT_ALTERNATE_OBJECT_DIRECTORIES. Git creates its batch directory inside that private directory, which the capture removes in ensuring along with the scratch index.
After a successful add, the new loose objects and any large-file pack (.idx last) are renamed into the repository. That's the same thing Git's own batch migration does, and the existing durable update-ref flushes them.
An earlier revision deleted batch directories that showed up in the shared objects directory during a failed add. It couldn't prove ownership, though: deleting another process's live batch directory makes that git add exit 0 with an index pointing at missing objects. The private directory avoids touching anything the capture didn't create.
Scope and approval
This is a small, focused fix for an obvious resource leak that can fill a user's disk. Checkpoints that succeed today still succeed, and those that fail still fail, but without leaving files behind. The fact that this capture keeps timing out on large untracked trees is a separate problem and is not touched here.
Verification
checkpoint capture removes the batch object directory a killed add leaves: a stubbed add creates a batch directory and then times out. It fails on main and passes here. It also asserts that a foreign batch directory already in objects/ survives, and that no t3-checkpoint-* scratch is left behind.
checkpoint capture publishes the pack Git writes for a large file: sets core.bigFileThreshold=1 so the add writes a pack. It fails if pack publishing is disabled.
All 69 tests in GitVcsDriver.test.ts pass; every capture in them now goes through the private directory. vp run check:changed passes.
Runtime transcript with real Git (60k × 4 KB untracked files, add timeout forced to 1s, three captures in a row):
Not checked: Windows. The code path is the same, and the alternates separator and replacing an existing read-only object are handled, but I only ran it on macOS (Git 2.54, Apple Git-157).

…ectory
On macOS and Windows, checkpoint staging runs `git add` with
core.fsyncMethod=batch, which writes new objects into
objects/tmp_objdir-bulk-fsync-*. When the add is killed (the 30s
timeout, or interruption) Git leaves that directory behind. A workspace
whose capture always times out leaked a full copy of its untracked
files on every turn: 357 directories, ~145 GB, in one day.
Capture now removes the batch directories that appeared during a failed
staging run. Staging is serialized per repository so the cleanup never
touches another capture's in-flight directory.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This fixes failed-checkpoint disk leaks by deleting newly observed Git batch-object directories. The unresolved ownership concern needs resolution because cleanup could delete another Git process's live objects, risking repository data loss.

Walkthrough
Checkpoint capture stages Git objects in a private directory, publishes them to the repository object store after successful staging, and removes temporary resources. Tests cover timeout cleanup, packed large-file capture, inherited object-directory recovery, and a platform-specific sparse-checkout path separator.

Stage objects privately and publish them apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.test.ts, packages/contracts/src/vcs.ts
Checkpoint staging writes objects to a private directory and uses the repository object store and inherited alternates for reads. After staging succeeds, the driver publishes loose objects and pack files. VcsProcessExitError accepts an optional cause. Tests cover packed large-file capture and shared-repository permissions.
Cleanup removes the temporary index, lock, and private object directory. A timeout test checks removal of temporary resources while preserving an unrelated temporary object directory. The sparse-checkout test selects its prefix separator by platform.
The identified object-store mismatch has been corrected. The change is mergeable after normal checks.

Deleting batch directories that appeared during a failed add could not
prove ownership: another Git process in the same repository could own
one, and removing it mid-add leaves that process's index pointing at
missing objects while it still exits 0.
Staging now runs with GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY set to a per-capture
directory (the repository's objects stay reachable as an alternate), so
Git's tmp_objdir-bulk-fsync-* lands inside a directory the capture owns
and always removes. After a successful add, the new loose objects and
any large-file pack are renamed into the repository, as Git's own batch
migration does; the durable update-ref flushes them.

verified on linux with the running dev web app, repository Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns through the local proxy. projects, threads, files, and worktrees were created through the app and provider. no mocked provider or checkpoint process.
found and fixed two regressions on this head:
main a036489016 successfully captured a repository with .git/objects symlinked to /dev/shm. original pr head a049688 failed to publish its new pack across filesystems and omitted the completed turn's checkpoint. staging now lives inside the object store. the same app/provider path then captured the edited content, published packs, and left no checkpoint scratch.
a sparse project at /home/user/checkpoint:paths lost an unchanged out-of-cone guide from its checkpoint. quoting the alternate object path preserves that guide and captures the new content. six existing sparse cases failed with separator-containing paths before this fix; they now pass.
nearby checks passed: loose-object capture, staged versus unstaged edits preserved in the user's index, client diff, git object integrity, and Edit from here > Revert files too in an app-created isolated worktree. restore removed the created file and preserved the shared checkout. the shared-checkout restore guard also refused an unsafe restore.
pushed fixes without rewriting history to the existing contributor branch. final head: a1c6a175bff571937a1c01822aadb8690c1ffec7. vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith, including format, lint, knip, typecheck, and 70 tests. two independent read-only reviewers approved this sha.
merged current main 61c3794c32b0 without rebasing. preserved main's sparse-index check and this pr's separator-path coverage.
fixed the remaining object-store review: write-tree, commit-tree, and update-ref now use the published object directory even with inherited GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY. also preserved git's shared-repository directory permissions by renaming newly published directories instead of recreating them. staging errors keep a fixed detail and retain their cause.
both object-store and shared-permission regressions failed before their fixes in an existing test case. final vp run check:changed passed through blacksmith: format, lint, knip, graphql, affected typechecks (36 packages), and 73 tests. head: a190263f50126b7aae4b47d9a8efc9cdcbb2c3af. no new test files.
real linux service/runtime check with umask 0022:
PASS: checkpoint captured edited contents with inherited GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY; published ref resolves after env reset; user index preserved; inherited store untouched; private scratch removed; shared fanout group writable; git fsck passed.
this follow-up was checked through the checkpoint service and real git. the client/provider path was not repeated in this run; the earlier evidence above is preserved. native batch-fsync timeout cleanup on macos/windows remains unverified.
Not verified
the original killed-add batch-fsync leak on macos/windows. this linux app explicitly uses plain fsync, so the original batch-directory leak could not be reproduced through its unmodified runtime. linux cleanup after the reproduced publication failure passed; that does not prove native batch-timeout cleanup.

Keep the Git error text out of detail, and preserve the PlatformError as cause.
The mapper copies cause.message into detail, which is an unbounded string from the operating system. VcsProcessExitError also has no cause attribute, so the mapper cannot keep the underlying failure. Use a fixed detail, and add an optional cause to the error schema before passing it.
