fix(web): keep working threads in place when refocusing tabs - #29556
Refocusing a browser tab briefly resynchronizes its environment shell. The sidebar treated that healthy refresh as a disconnect, moved running threads into the inbox, and animated them back across the sidebar.
The sidebar now retains each environment's previous placement while connecting or synchronizing. A healthy refresh keeps working threads in their shelf. After a real disconnect, threads stay visible in the inbox until the authoritative shell data arrives. Cold starts retain cached placement. The disconnected-environment atom keeps this history in its own previous value and preserves set identity when placement is unchanged. The always-mounted app layout starts this tracking even while the narrow sidebar popup is closed.
Validation:
Added transition cases for foreground refresh, reconnect before synchronization, connecting again after going offline, explicit connection, and cold start. Three reconnect cases failed against the previous implementation; all 95 sidebar logic tests now pass.
Added an atom-level test for reconnects before the sidebar first reads and after its reader unmounts, including stable set identity during a healthy refresh.
Exercised the actual sidebar with controlled mock connection and shell inputs. The row stayed under Working during refresh, stayed in the inbox through connected-but-stale reconnect, and returned to Working once live.
vp run check:changed passed formatting, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 146 selected tests, and React compiler checks.
Repro: enable the Working shelf, start a turn, and repeatedly switch away from the browser tab and return. The row should stay under Working. After an actual disconnect, it should remain in the inbox until synchronization completes.
The existing before/after recordings below demonstrate the focus regression using synthetic Replay data in an isolated environment. They are cropped to the sidebar and contain no audio or source metadata. The original user recording is not included.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Keeps working threads on their existing shelf during tab-refocus refreshes while retaining disconnected handling until live data returns. The change is limited to sidebar presentation state and leaves product defaults and stored thread data unchanged.

Walkthrough
The sidebar now uses connection phase, live-shell status, and prior disconnection state to determine whether an environment is disconnected. A shared atom provides disconnected environment IDs to sidebar thread placement and remains mounted with the layout. The connection summaries hook was removed.
isSidebarEnvironmentDisconnected now accepts prior disconnection state. It preserves that state while connecting or connected without a live shell, and returns connected for a live shell in the connected phase. Tests cover phase results and state transitions, including when the sidebar reader is unmounted.
Shared sidebar disconnection state apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/components/AppSidebarLayout.tsx, apps/web/src/state/environments.ts
A shared atom derives disconnected environment IDs from environment summaries, live-shell IDs, and prior membership. Sidebar thread placement reads the atom, and AppSidebarLayout mounts it for the layout’s lifetime. The useEnvironmentConnectionSummaries hook was removed.

Explanation
The title "fix(web): keep working threads in place when refocusing tabs" follows conventional commit format and matches the main change. The PR keeps working threads in the Working shelf during a healthy refresh after a browser tab refocus, which the summary and objectives both describe. The title is short and specific. It does not cover the reconnect or cold-start tracking, but that is expected.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem, the change, and verification in plain language, so it is mostly complete against the template. It explains the refocus regression, how the sidebar now retains placement during connecting and synchronizing, and what the disconnected-environment atom does. Verification lists specific test cases, a manual exercise of the sidebar, and a repro. It also includes before/after recordings. The 'Scope and approval' section is missing. It does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer discussion, and it does not explain why the change qualifies as a small focused fix without one. The description also does not state the model and harness in the required closing line, although it does include 'Model: GPT-6.1 Sol. Harness: Codex in T3 Code.' The reported test counts (95 tests) also differ from the objectives (94 tests, 145 selected tests), which the author should reconcile.
Resolution
Add a 'Scope and approval' section that links the triaged bug issue or the maintainer-approved discussion, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug. Confirm the test counts in the Validation section (the description says 95 sidebar logic tests and 146 selected tests, while the PR objectives cite 94 and 145) and update whichever is out of date. Also confirm that the before/after recordings are embedded or linked so reviewers can view them.

exercised the app's visibility listener during running turns. each of five browser-dispatched visibility events caused a real shell resubscription. main moved the thread from working into the inbox and back on all five. the pr retained its placement on all five. captures use 4x browser cpu throttling to expose main's transient movement. the event trigger limitation is described below.
reset the actual app websocket while briefly pausing only its dev server. the running thread moved into the inbox. after reconnection, held the real shell http request without replacing its response: the connection became connected, the shell was not live, and the row stayed in the inbox. releasing the request restored live synchronization and returned the running row to working.
repeated disconnect/reconnect at 640px width before opening the sidebar for the first time. its first opening while connected but not synchronized kept the cached running row in the inbox. real provider completion subsequently returned the thread to the inbox. disabling the working section also removed the shelf during a running turn; the setting was restored afterward.

native tab visibility delivery remains unverified on this vm. chrome reported document.visibilityState === "visible" for both tabs after native switching, focus-emulation changes, and minimizing. native switching alone did not resubscribe the shell. the recordings therefore dispatch the visibility event from the browser after switching tabs; they prove the real client/server refresh and sidebar behavior, not native visibility delivery. no connection or shell atoms were overridden.
native desktop, ios/android, macos/windows, other providers, and relay/tunnel connections were not exercised. verification covered the local web client with real codex turns. this replaces the earlier comment's verification of older heads; those results do not establish the current head's behavior.
Exercise disconnectedEnvironmentIdsAtom in a focused transition test
The new tests validate only the helper with a manually maintained boolean. Add an atom-level test that drives one environment through reconnect-before-synchronization and asserts the emitted previous-ID set. This test would catch a regression that resets prior membership on each atom recomputation.

minimal, and validate.
