fix(chat): refresh local images after file changes - #29690
An assistant embeds a local image, overwrites that file, and embeds the same path again. The new message still shows the original pixels. The asset URL query is cached by resource, and the HTTP route allows browsers to cache that URL for an hour.
Related to #13138. The overlapping proposals #23510 and #14943 are still open. This change refreshes live assistant markdown embeds, including earlier visible embeds of the same file; it does not preserve historical image snapshots.
Change
Include file size and nanosecond modification/change timestamps in signed host-media URLs. Re-minting after an edit produces a different URL, while unchanged files reuse their URL within an expiry bucket. The server still reads the file on requests and retains the existing device/inode authorization checks.
Web and mobile chat images re-mint on a new assistant message and turn completion. Web also uses its existing workspace-mutation signal. Share the revision-aware URL helper between clients and defer its refresh through the atom scheduler so multiple images cannot update one another during React render. Attachments do not subscribe to the new context.
Scope and approval
Matthew Feroz requested this fix and authorized implementation, the PR, and CI/review follow-up. The server URL change, shared query handling, and both chat renderers address the same stale-file bug. No changes to the temporary Replay fixture ship in this PR.
Verification
vp run check:changed passed: format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL validation, typechecks for 9 affected packages, 199 tests in 11 files, and the React compiler checks. Its compiler test selection passed 12 cases; 2,305 unrelated cases were filtered out.
All 89 mobile file-preview tests pass after updating their image-module mock to export the new revision context. The initial CI Test failure exposed that missing mock export.
The scheduler regression failed before the fix because reading the atom synchronously started a refresh. It now covers deferred refresh, duplicate subscribers, cancellation/remount, and edits during an in-flight mint. The server test checks changed URLs at the same test-clock time. The browser regression renders two same-file images and verifies both refresh without React console errors.
macOS, isolated Chromium, free Replay provider, isolated dev state: render red, overwrite the same file blue, then atomically replace it green. On the baseline all embeds stayed red. With this change all visible embeds matched the current file. Both runs had no console errors or failed requests. Repeated the fixed sequence in a No project scratch thread; the third reply had no tool event and all three embeds became green.
Native iOS simulator: the old visible embed and a new assistant reply both changed from red to blue after overwriting the same file. Android, the Electron shell, relay, and tunnel connections were not exercised. Desktop uses the tested web renderer.

blacksmith vp run check:changed github/main passed: lint, format, both knip checks, GraphQL, nine package typechecks, 199 tests across 11 files, and React compiler checks. two independent read-only reviews approved this head.
verified the real Linux Chrome client through Codex turns and signed asset requests: a loaded paused video changed from red to blue without reloading; an unchanged-file turn reused the same URL. native mobile, Electron, relay, and tunnel were not reverified this pass. the uploaded recording was played to completion and seeking checked.
final head: fb41ce301578c802dcb57a061e1d675fcd25d8bf. the video test now disables network decoding and drives metadata explicitly, following the existing player tests. all scoped checks pass on these final sources, and both independent reviewers approved this SHA.
GitHub does not render externally hosted MP4 image embeds; the upload's playback and seeking were verified in Chrome. the screenshots below render the same loaded video before and after the live refresh.
final CI: all 34 checks green on fb41ce301578c802dcb57a061e1d675fcd25d8bf, no conflicts, and no unresolved review threads. dev services and the task worker are stopped.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The change refreshes local chat media after file changes while keeping unchanged files cacheable. It also extends signed host-file URL validity from one hour to as much as nearly 90 minutes; that access-lifetime change needs explicit human acceptance.

Signed media URLs now include file revision data. Client asset state schedules URL refreshes when revisions change. Mobile and web markdown image flows provide revision values for mutable media.

Summary
File revision in signed URLs apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.ts, apps/server/src/assets/AssetAccess.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/assetImageSource.ts
Media-file claims include revisions derived from file size and timestamps. Media-file and HTML attachment token expiries use a shared 30-minute bucket. Tests check that URLs remain stable for unchanged files and change after a rewrite.
Revision-keyed URL state packages/client-runtime/src/state/assets.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/assets.test.ts, apps/mobile/src/state/assets.ts, apps/web/src/assets/assetUrls.ts
The client runtime schedules refreshes for pending revisions and checks that atoms remain active before refreshing. Tests cover deferred refreshes, duplicate mounts, remounts, and in-flight changes.
Mobile and web chat views provide revision values to markdown image components. Mutable media passes the selected revision to asset URL state. Browser tests check that two embeds refresh after a revision change.
A narrow web-video refresh regression could ship undetected; add the playback coverage before relying on this test.

Verified unchanged head a90e92fc713d8821466e04e68f7a6cd08ff26aef on a Linux Boat VM using the real dev web client, repository Playwright, Google Chrome, and Codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy. Created the project, thread, and image through the app and real provider turns. No mocks, Replay, or seeded demo data.
On github/main (57cd05904d), overwriting the same 320x160 PNG blue left both earlier embeds and the new "blue image" reply red. Stopped main, checked out the exact PR head, installed dependencies, and started one isolated dev server. The screenshots use the same conversation copied from the stopped baseline.
A fresh red-to-blue overwrite on the PR refreshed the earlier visible embed and the new reply without reloading, as shown in the recording. Atomic replacement with green also refreshed earlier/new embeds. Absolute and relative paths worked. A no-tool reply with an unchanged file reused the same signed URL. Image expansion and navigating away/back showed current green pixels.
Runtime observations:
main: file pixel RGB [30,136,229]; rendered embeds RGB [229,57,53]
PR live overwrite: rendered embeds RGB [30,136,229]
PR atomic replacement: rendered embeds RGB [67,160,71]
old inode URL after replacement: HTTP 404; current URL: HTTP 200
Blacksmith checks: 134 tests passed across AssetAccess, shared asset state, and mobile file-preview tests; both markdown-image Chromium browser tests passed after installing the worker's missing Chromium dependency. Existing head CI reports 33 successful checks, zero failing or pending. No source changes or pushes were needed.

Native iOS/Android, the Electron shell, macOS/Windows, relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised. This pass verifies the local Linux web client and Codex path.
GitHub does not render the externally hosted MP4 image embed above. The uploaded video itself was played through to the end and seeking was checked in T3's video player. The before/after screenshots render in this comment.
