feat(clients): threads that nothing will resume show as Idle - #29887
An agent often ends a turn with a promise like "once the release lands I'll verify it" while holding nothing T3 Code can wake it from: no running background task or monitor, no watched pull request, no open delegated thread, no scheduled task bound to the thread. Nothing will ever start another turn, but in the sidebar the thread looks like one that is still waiting, so users find out only when they come back and type "continue". In one heavy user's history, 129 of 424 "continue"/"progress" nudges followed exactly this: a promise to continue with no wake armed.
Change
A thread whose latest turn ended (completed, interrupted, or cancelled) with no pending wake now shows Idle:
Web and desktop sidebar: a muted "Idle" status with a plain circle icon and the time since the turn ended, in the slot that already shows Working, Waiting, and Done. Only on active rows; settled and snoozed rows keep their own state. Done (unread) and Woke still come first.
Web and desktop thread header: an "Idle" badge next to the title, with the tooltip "Nothing will resume this thread". Like the sidebar row, it stays off settled and snoozed threads, and Done (unread) and Woke come first (threadHeaderMayShowIdle, sharing the row's Woke rule).
Mobile thread list: the same "Idle" label on active cards, skipped while the row has outbox messages queued to send.
The rule lives once in packages/client-runtime (threadHasNoPendingWake in state/threadInbox.ts) and reads thread state, never the agent's text:
Not idle while a turn runs or awaits its checkpoint, or after a failed or rolled-back turn. Failed turns keep the Failed and Limited states, and usage-limit recovery can retry them. After a rollback, the pending-work list is hidden, so T3 can't tell what is still held.
Not idle while any background task is running, awaited or not. Waiting stays limited to awaited work, as today, but Claude wakes the agent when any background command it started exits, so an unawaited one can still resume the thread. This also covers watched pull requests and delegated threads, which are already in pendingBackgroundTasks.
Not idle while an approval, a question, a child thread's request, or a guest message is pending.
Not idle while queued messages wait in a held queue (held after a failure or a stop until released). The shell presents the earlier ended turn as the latest run in that case, so the server now reports this as an optional hasHeldQueue on thread shells, from both the SQL and the in-memory builders. Older servers omit it, and an unknown held-queue state never reads as idle, so those servers never show Idle.
Not idle while a scheduled task bound to the thread can still run: it has a next run, or it is an enabled webhook task. This comes from the existing scheduledTasks.subscribe stream through a new per-thread boolean atom (threadHasScheduledWake), so a list push re-renders only rows whose answer changes. A row subscribes only when everything else already says idle. Until the list loads, nothing reads as idle.
The user guide gets a short "Idle threads" section in docs/user/thread-sidebar.md.
Scope and approval
Proposed in the Ideas discussion #29900, which was opened after this PR, so it has no maintainer approval yet. It is a small presentation change. Its one contract and server addition is the optional hasHeldQueue shell field. I'm happy to change or close it to fit the direction you prefer there.
Verification
Added tests for the rule, built from real thread shells through presentThreadShell. Idle after a completed, interrupted, or cancelled turn with nothing pending. Not idle for each kind of pending wake: no turn yet, a running turn, a turn awaiting its checkpoint, a failed turn, a rolled-back turn, an awaited background command, an unawaited background command, an open delegated thread, a watched pull request, a pending approval, a pending question, a child thread's approval or question, a guest message, an armed scheduled task, and an unknown scheduled task list.
Added a held queue to the server's existing held-queue test: both the SQL and in-memory shells report hasHeldQueue once a queued run is held, and not before. Added a test for isThreadListedActive: active, settled, snoozed, and a snooze that already ended.
Added tests for which scheduled tasks count: a bound task with a next run or an enabled webhook counts. Tasks for other threads, unbound tasks, disabled tasks, a spent one-time task, and policy-blocked tasks don't.
Removed each rule from the function in turn and confirmed a test fails for it. An earlier explicit background-work check never failed a test, because the shell already parks the runtime at idle for held work, so I removed that check.
Ran the contracts, server, client-runtime, web, and mobile typechecks, lint, and format for the changed files on Node 26.12.1, plus the server ProjectionStore, ThreadStop, ShellStream and WireProjection tests. Knip and the React Compiler coverage check passed on the first revision. The existing ChatHeader browser test and server.test.ts still pass.
CodeRabbit's findings are fixed here: Idle off settled and snoozed headers, Done and Woke ahead of the header badge, held queues (first with a message-time check, then with hasHeldQueue, which also covers a message queued before a stop), and no Idle while an older server leaves the held-queue state unknown. Each gate has a test that fails when the gate is removed.
One fresh reviewer read the diff. Their findings are fixed here: unawaited background commands, rolled-back turns, row re-renders on scheduled-task pushes, header re-renders during a turn, the mobile time going stale, mobile queued messages, and lint and format issues.
Not checked:
I did not check the UI in a browser or on a device. There are no before or after screenshots. A dev server I started for them died before I captured anything. The labels reuse the existing status slot, icon set, and Badge variant, but I haven't seen them rendered on web, desktop, iOS, or Android.
Wake behavior for background tasks on providers other than Claude: I treat every running background task as a possible wake for all providers.
Not added to the command palette's thread status or the mobile thread screen header.
Rows that may become idle keep the scheduled task subscription open per environment while the sidebar is mounted. Before this change, it was open only while Settings, the automations panel, or a scheduled message was on screen.
Written by Claude Opus 5.5 running in T3 Code (Claude Code harness).
An agent often ends a turn promising to continue once something outside
T3 finishes, such as a release or a merge queue. When it holds no
background task, pull request watch, delegate or scheduled task, nothing
ever starts another turn, yet the thread looks like one that is waiting.
Mark those threads Idle in the web sidebar, the web thread header and
the mobile thread list, derived from the thread shell and the
environment's scheduled tasks rather than the agent's text.
Any running background task blocks Idle, awaited or not, because Claude
wakes the agent when one it started exits. Scheduled tasks reach rows
through a per-thread boolean atom, so a list push re-renders only rows
whose answer changes.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds Idle indicators when an ended thread has no known pending work or scheduled wake. The change is informational and does not alter thread execution or scheduling; unknown schedule state suppresses the indicator.

Walkthrough
The change adds held-queue and scheduled-wake checks to thread idle detection. Mobile and web views display Idle when their status conditions pass, and eligible rows can show the latest run’s completion time.
Changes: Thread idle status

Summary
Expose held-queue state packages/contracts/src/orchestrationV2.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/state/models.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.test.ts
Thread shells expose whether a queued run is held. Projection and SQL shell paths populate the value, and tests check both representations.
The idle predicate checks for an ended runtime and no pending work. Scheduled tasks count as wake sources when they match the thread, are not policy-blocked, and have a next run or an enabled webhook schedule. Listed-active and sidebar visibility checks account for settlement, snoozes, unseen completions, and wakes.
Expose scheduled-wake state packages/client-runtime/src/state/server.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/use-thread-has-no-pending-wake.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useThreadHasNoPendingWake.ts
The runtime exposes scheduled-task wake state for scoped thread keys. The mobile and web hooks return true only when the thread may be idle and has no scheduled wake.
Display Idle status apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-list-v2-items.tsx, apps/web/src/components/sidebar/SidebarThreadRow.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatHeader.tsx, docs/user/thread-sidebar.md
Mobile and web thread views display Idle under their status conditions. Rows can show the latest run’s completion time. The sidebar documentation explains Idle and Waiting states.

The sidebar and mobile rows already hide Idle on settled and snoozed
threads, which show the user's own decision instead. The header now
uses the same rule through isThreadListedActive, with a clock that
moves when a snooze ends.

Include queue-held scheduled messages in pending-work detection.
A one-time scheduled task can clear nextRunAt after it accepts its message. If that message remains queueHeld, latestUnheldRun hides it from threadHasNoPendingWake. The prior ended runtime can then satisfy the predicate and display Idle even though the scheduled message is still queued. Represent the held message in PendingWakeThreadInput or preserve an equivalent pending-wake signal until the message is released.

A message queued after a failure or a stop stays held until the user
releases it, and the shell then presents the earlier ended turn as the
latest run. Treat a user message newer than that turn's end as pending
work, so the thread does not read Idle while it waits.
@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding in your review of 755db27 ("Include queue-held scheduled messages in pending-work detection") is fixed in 475172e.
A queued run's user message is written when the run is queued, so the shell's latestUserMessageAt already reflects a held message, while the presented latest run stays on the earlier ended turn. threadHasNoPendingWake now treats a user message newer than that turn's completedAt as pending work. That covers a held scheduled message after a one-time task cleared nextRunAt, and any other message held after a failure or a stop. Messages sent mid-turn are folded into it and predate its end, so they still read Idle. Tests in threadInbox.test.ts cover both cases.

A message queued during a turn and held by a stop predates that turn's
end, so the timestamp check missed it and the thread read Idle. Shells
now carry hasHeldQueue from both the SQL and in-memory builders, and
the Idle rule reads it instead of comparing message times. Older
servers omit the field, which reads as no held queue.
Keep unread and Woke exceptions ahead of the header Idle badge.
ThreadIdleBadge currently checks only active-list membership and useThreadHasNoPendingWake. Derive the same isUnread and isWoke values used by SidebarThreadRow, then return null when either value is true before evaluating useThreadHasNoPendingWake. Leave that hook unchanged so the existing held-queue handling remains centralized.

Update ThreadIdleBadge to derive the same isUnread and isWoke values as
SidebarThreadRow and suppress the Idle badge when either is true. Keep
useThreadHasNoPendingWake unchanged and call it unconditionally to preserve hook
ordering; retain its result for the existing badge decision.

Servers from before hasHeldQueue omit it even when a queued message is
held, so treating the gap as no held queue could show Idle on such a
thread. Keep the field absent on the presented shell and require an
explicit false before a thread can read Idle.
The sidebar row shows Done for an unread completion and Woke for a
snooze that ended unseen before it would show Idle. The header now asks
the same questions through threadHeaderMayShowIdle, and the row and
header share the Woke rule in isSidebarThreadWoke.
@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding in your review of 987cda9 ("Keep unread and Woke exceptions ahead of the header Idle badge") is fixed in cfa3ed6.
ThreadIdleBadge now passes threadHeaderMayShowIdle (in Sidebar.logic.ts) as the hook's enabled flag, and the hook is still called unconditionally. That helper returns false when the thread isn't in the active list, when hasUnseenCompletion says the completion is unread (Done), or when isSidebarThreadWoke says the thread woke after the last visit (Woke). It uses the same last-visited time as the row: the server value, with the local fallback through resolveThreadLastVisitedAt. SidebarThreadRow now uses isSidebarThreadWoke too, so the row and the header share one Woke rule. useThreadHasNoPendingWake and its held-queue handling are unchanged. A new test in Sidebar.logic.test.ts covers read, unread, settled, snoozed, woke, and woke-then-seen.

@macroscope-app please re-run Approvability on the current head (cfa3ed6). The last verdict was at 54615ce, and the PR has since added the header gating, held-queue handling (including a new optional hasHeldQueue shell field), and the older-server rule.
Verified cfa3ed693bfb85fa88ef393761dbf75eaf3d9c72 on this Linux VM with the real dev server, repository Playwright, /usr/bin/google-chrome, and real Codex gpt-6.1-sol turns. No mocks or fixtures. No source changes were needed.
Reproduced on github/main (61c3794c32) first: a completed, read turn with no pending work had no Idle indicator. Stopped main before starting the exact PR head, using the same app-created conversation data.
PR shows Idle in the sidebar and header, with "Nothing will resume this thread" on hover. A follow-up turn runs successfully; Idle disappears during sustained execution and returns after completion.
Codex created a scheduled interval bound to the thread through schedule_task. After completion, the enabled wake suppresses Idle. Pausing it through Settings restores Idle without reloading.
Queued a message during a real turn, then stopped the turn. The interrupted thread with the held queue does not show Idle. "Send now" releases the message, Codex replies, and Idle returns.
Settling hides Idle; un-settling restores it.
Blacksmith: 196 existing tests passed across threadInbox, entities, Sidebar.logic, and ProjectionStore. Inspected CI: 28 successful, none failing or pending.
There is a brief status propagation window immediately after submitting a follow-up where the prior Idle indicator remains; it clears during the running turn. No sustained stale Idle state was observed.
Native iOS/Android and Electron shell behavior were not exercised on this Linux browser path. Other providers, relay/tunnel connections, actual timer firing, watched PR/delegate/background-task/approval/guest wake variants, snooze/Woke, and unread Done precedence were not exercised end to end. Focused tests cover several of those predicates, but that is not runtime proof.
