fix(clients): preserve unlinked thread targets when pasting - #29935
Pasting a thread chip from an unlinked machine discarded its structured record but kept its t3-context:// link. Sending it then gave the provider unavailable="true", with neither the canonical thread ID nor the source environment ID.
Declined thread imports now become existing scoped t3-thread://v2/<environmentId>/<threadId> links using the clipboard record's canonical IDs. This applies to web/desktop clipboard imports and stash restoration, and mobile composer paste. Local and linked thread chips keep their existing behavior. The guards against attaching unreadable threads remain in place.
Head 1844a269726bdb390ff1ff63d6c0b4740116dc6c, baseline 61c3794c32b0eeebfac09add43e403618c65d2d7.
Review follow-up: thread readability is now checked before duplicate detection, so re-pasting or restoring a thread already attached before unlinking still produces the scoped link. The extended existing importer case fails on 60ce7e5 and passes at this head.
Regression first: web importer test fails on the baseline; two existing mobile mixed-paste cases fail after asserting that the rejected target survives as a scoped link. All pass with the fix. The tests also cover linked chips, record limits, history identity, and failed attachments.
Focused tests pass: web importer 12, mobile clipboard 9, shared context/thread links 48, editor paste/stash browser tests 15.
vp run check:changed passes format, lint, knip, affected typechecks (34 packages), tests, and React compiler checks.
Real client at the original fix commit 60ce7e5c10484ed6285df86ce4eb80c38fce0f4b: isolated development server on corex, Chromium 1280×800, light theme, synthetic clipboard data, free Replay (dev) multi-turn provider. Repeated the same paste and send before and after. Inspected the persisted message and projected it with the production provider projector. After sending, the tooltip says "Thread on another machine".
Independent Codex round 1 found the importer implementation sound. Its coverage findings are recorded below. Fresh independent Codex round 2 found no blocker, should-fix, or nit in the duplicate-detection follow-up, including stale-record retention, the send guard, local/linked handling, and stash rewriting.
No unavailable envelope is added. Passing that source environment to a tool uses existing environment-link handling rather than a local lookup of an opaque context ID.

An ordinary web question answer also retains the same target on paste and submission:
Limits and remaining verification
The reporter's exact clipboard provenance was not established. This reproduces and fixes the declined structured-import path.
Clipboard text whose fragment is already missing cannot recover an unknown environment. Existing saved orphan references are unchanged.
Native mobile question-answer paste and literal editor requests bypass these importers and remain outside this fix. Ordinary web question answers were also exercised with the free Replay question scenario. The resolved runtime request retained Read [Remote reference](t3-thread://v2/source-machine/remote-reference) as its answer.
Successful remote linking and a real model reading the remote transcript were not tested. The target IDs survive; existing linking tools provide recovery.
macOS desktop and native mobile runtime verification are pending. Web is the shared desktop UI, but the report came from macOS and needs that pass before readiness.

Mobile and web composer imports now preserve references to skipped or unlinked threads as unreadable-thread links. Web paste and stash flows use typed mappings that can replace references with a new context ID or Markdown.
Reference formatting and rewrite contracts packages/shared/src/composerContextReferences.ts, apps/web/src/lib/composerContextReferences.ts
The shared module adds a helper that formats an unreadable-thread link. The web module adds a typed replacement value and a function that rewrites references using IDs or Markdown.

Mobile imports rewrite skipped-thread references as unreadable-thread links. Web imports map unlinked threads to those links and retain context IDs for linked threads. Tests cover the rewritten text and imported contexts.
Apply imported references in composer flows apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx, apps/web/src/components/composerInlineTokenPaste.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerStash.ts, apps/mobile/src/components/ComposerEditor.tsx
Web paste and stash flows use typed imported-reference mappings to rewrite prompt text. The mobile warning text describes failed attachments and skipped threads.
Pasted remote references lack explicit connection guidance, and uncommon imported IDs can produce malformed links. These are bounded follow-ups.

Explanation
The title "fix(clients): preserve unlinked thread targets when pasting" is a short conventional commit title that matches the main change. The changeset rewrites declined thread imports into scoped t3-thread://v2 links, so pasted references keep their canonical environment and thread IDs instead of becoming unavailable context chips. The title names the core behavior and the paste context, which a teammate scanning history can use to identify the change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem (pasting an unlinked-machine thread chip drops its record and sends unavailable="true" without thread or environment IDs), the change (declined imports become scoped t3-thread://v2 links across web/desktop clipboard, stash restore, and mobile paste), and a detailed verification section with commands, commit hashes, before/after screenshots, and stated limits. The template's Scope and approval section is not clearly filled in: it references Closes issue #29925 but does not explicitly link a triaged issue with maintainer approval comment or explain an exemption. The template's 'Problem' heading is also not used verbatim, though the content is present. Because the description is mostly complete, this is a pass with a note on the approval evidence.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #29925 requires that a selected cross-environment thread reference keep its canonical thread ID and source environment ID. When the source environment is not linked, the target must be preserved with connection guidance. The reproduced failure occurred because a declined thread import dropped the context record. The provider then received unavailable="true" with no IDs. The PR changes this path. In apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerContextImport.ts, a thread from an environment that is neither the current nor a linked environment maps its contextId to { markdown: unreadableThreadContextLink(record) }. In packages/shared/src/composerContextReferences.ts, unreadableThreadContextLink builds a t3-thread://v2/<environmentId>/<threadId> link from the record's canonical IDs. The same mapping reaches stash restore and mobile composer paste through the rewritten helpers. The PR description shows saved text and projected provider text that keep the target IDs, with no unavailable envelope. Incremental check: at head, the unreadable-thread branch runs before the duplicate-detection branch in importContextRecords. A re-paste or restore of a thread attached before unlinking therefore still produces the scoped link. The web importer browser test covers both the already-attached and not-attached cases. Limits: the connection guidance uses existing UI handling (the 'Thread on another machine' tooltip and existing t3-thread link handling). The PR adds no new agent-facing guidance text, and successful remote linking and agent transcript reading were not tested. The reporter's exact clipboard provenance is not established. Clipboard text whose fragment is already missing cannot recover the source environment ID. These limits are disclosed and do not show a concrete unmet requirement on the fixed path. Objectives are grouped under #29925.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Every changed area relates to the declined-thread import fix for #29925. Shared and web changes: unreadableThreadContextLink in packages/shared/src/composerContextReferences.ts and the thread branch in useComposerContextImport.ts implement the replacement. ImportedContextReference and rewriteImportedContextReferences in apps/web/src/lib/composerContextReferences.ts, together with the updated signatures in composerInlineTokenPaste.ts, ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx, and useComposerStash.ts, carry the replacement into paste and stash restore. These are supporting changes to the type and rewrite path. Mobile changes: composerContextClipboard.ts rewrites skipped-thread references in pasted text. ComposerEditor.tsx updates warning text to match the link behavior. Test changes: the web importer browser test and the mobile composerContextClipboard test cover the changed behavior, including linked and local thread chips and the failed-attachment case. No unrelated feature or behavior change was identified in the summary or in the inspected source.

Map unlinked threads before duplicate detection.
If a thread is already attached when its environment becomes unlinked, the duplicate check on Lines 351–359 skips this branch on a later paste or stash restore. The imported reference remains a t3-context chip instead of becoming a scoped t3-thread link. Check thread readability before skipping an existing record. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add source-linking guidance to the shared unreadable-thread link.
Web and mobile both send unreadableThreadContextLink(record) when a pasted thread is on an unlinked environment. The helper currently sends only the t3-thread://v2/... URI. The agent can then receive thread_not_found locally without knowing that it must link the source environment. Append guidance to use t3_environment_link with the preserved environmentId.

Use \`t3_environment_link\` with environmentId \`${record.environmentId}\` before reading this thread.`;

created a project pointing at the real repository through the app, ran a real Codex gpt-6.1-sol source turn, and copied its thread through the thread menu. restarted with a separate destination home where that source environment was unlinked. used the actual app-produced clipboard data, without mocks, seeded fixtures, or Replay.
main: paste produced an unavailable context chip. after sending, Codex reported the opaque context id and said the environment identifier was absent.
PR: the same clipboard target became a scoped thread link. stash and restore preserved that link. sending it through real Codex returned both canonical identifiers. repeated this from a fresh thread in the recording.
neighboring behavior: copying and pasting a local thread still produced an attached, readable chip. its persisted message retained the structured context record, and real Codex returned its correct local thread and environment ids.

native iOS/Android runtime and the macOS/Windows Electron shell were not exercised on this Linux VM. mobile clipboard unit tests passed; that does not prove native clipboard integration.
successful environment linking and reading the remote transcript were not exercised. this pass proves target preservation and delivery to a real provider, not remote recovery.
already-attached-then-unlinked duplicate handling was covered by the existing importer tests, not a multi-machine runtime scenario. stash restoration of a newly pasted scoped link was exercised; restoration of a previously readable structured chip after unlinking was not.
the reporter’s exact macOS clipboard provenance and clipboard content already missing its structured fragment were not reproduced.
