Summary

Adds typed HGETDEL command support to the Java client. HGETDEL (introduced in Valkey 9.1) atomically gets and deletes one or more hash fields in a single operation, returning the values in request order (null for fields that did not exist). The key is deleted automatically when its last field is removed.

Since the command did not previously exist anywhere in the repo, it is also wired through the Rust core so it can be routed as a first-class command.

Issue link

This Pull Request is linked to issue: [Task] [Valkey 9.1] Add HGETDEL command support

Features / Behaviour Changes

  • New Java API on HashBaseCommands:
    • CompletableFuture<String[]> hgetdel(String key, String[] fields)
    • CompletableFuture<GlideString[]> hgetdel(GlideString key, GlideString[] fields)
  • New batch API on BaseBatch: hgetdel(ArgType key, ArgType[] fields) (supports String / GlideString).
  • Single-key write command routed to the slot of key (no cross-slot concerns).

Implementation

Rust core (command did not exist yet, wired end-to-end):

  • command_request.proto / request_type.rs: added HGetDel = 628, the ProtobufRequestType → RequestType mapping, and the HGETDEL command-name mapping.
  • timeout_watchdog.rs: added HGETDEL to the 7-char command-name resolver (keeps exhaustive RequestType coverage).
  • otel_db_semantics.rs: classified HGETDEL as ShowAll for OTel query-text masking (all args are non-sensitive, like HDEL).
  • scope.rs: registered HGETDEL as a first-arg-key command for slot validation.

Java client:

  • HashBaseCommands.java: interface methods (String + GlideString overloads) with Javadoc.
  • BaseClient.java: builds HGETDEL key FIELDS <n> field... and returns the values array; binary overload uses handleArrayOrNullResponseBinary so missing fields map to null.
  • BaseBatch.java: generic batch method.

The command arguments follow the documented syntax: HGETDEL key FIELDS numfields field [field ...].

CI:

  • .github/json_matrices/engine-matrix.json: added a Valkey 9.1 entry (run: always) to the shared engine matrix. The PR matrix previously topped out at Valkey 9.0, so every HGETDEL test (gated on >= 9.1.0) would self-skip and the wire args / response conversion would never be exercised in CI. This is the shared matrix consumed by all language jobs, so it also benefits the parallel Go PR (feat(go): add HGETDEL command support #7207) and any future 9.1 command work.

Valkey 9.1 test fixes (side effect of enabling 9.1 in CI):
Running the suites against Valkey 9.1 for the first time surfaced a pre-existing stale assertion in the objectEncoding tests. Valkey 9.1 raised the embstr size limit (from 64 to 128 bytes) as part of its memory-efficiency work, so a short string that previously encoded as raw now encodes as embstr. The affected tests set a ~57-byte value and asserted raw, which now fails on 9.1 with expected: <raw> but was: <embstr>. Fixed by using a value larger than the new threshold (200 bytes) so the string is stored as raw on every supported server version, across all three affected languages:

  • Java: SharedCommandTests.java (objectEncoding_returns_string_raw, objectEncoding_binary_returns_string_raw)
  • Node: SharedTests.ts
  • Python: test_async_client.py, test_sync_client.py

These test-only changes are unrelated to HGETDEL itself; they are required to keep the shared 9.1 matrix green.

Limitations

None. Full parity with the command semantics; requires Valkey 9.1.0+ on the server (tests are gated accordingly).

Testing

  • Unit tests (GlideClientTest): String and binary overloads assert the correct request type and argument layout.
  • Batch unit test (BatchTests): asserts the emitted protobuf args (key FIELDS 2 field1 field2).
  • Integration tests (SharedCommandTests, gated on 9.1.0+):
    • hgetdel_basic_functionality — get+delete with a missing field returns the value / null, and remaining fields are untouched.
    • hgetdel_deletes_key_when_last_field_removed — key is auto-deleted when its last field is removed; HGETDEL on a nonexistent key returns an array of nulls.
    • hgetdel_binary_parameters — GlideString overload.
    • hgetdel_error_handling — WRONGTYPE error when called on a non-hash key.
  • Batch integration (BatchTestUtilities, gated on 9.1.0+): hgetdel added to the sequence with matching expected results.

Verification run locally:

  • Rust: cargo build --release, cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --release — all pass.
  • Java: client + integTest compile; new unit tests pass; spotlessCheck passes.

Live-server integration tests require a running Valkey 9.1.0+ instance and were not executed in this environment, but compile and follow existing hgetex patterns; they now run in CI via the new Valkey 9.1 matrix job. CI confirms all Java jobs (6.2, 9.0, 9.1) pass, including the previously-failing objectEncoding tests on 9.1.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b72e7

HGETDEL adds a useful atomic operation, but its key and field names will be visible in query telemetry where they were previously masked. This could matter if an application uses sensitive identifiers. No exposure of hash values or new authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: Classifying HGETDEL as ShowAll exposes its key and field names in query telemetry for any caller using the shared core, rather than masking them as an unlisted command. The privacy consequence depends on identifier content and telemetry access; hash values are not command arguments.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The telemetry change is shared-core behavior, not Java-only behavior: existing raw-command entrypoints can also issue HGETDEL. No new tenant, credential, or infrastructure authority was identified in the inspected path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If applications place sensitive identifiers in hash keys or field names and permit another party to read query telemetry, that party could see those identifiers from HGETDEL calls. The available evidence does not establish either condition in a deployment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The typed Java method uses the existing asynchronous command submission path, while scoped execution checks the first key's slot before dispatch. The inspected sources do not show a new authentication or credential path for HGETDEL.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — A repeated successful HGETDEL call naturally observes missing fields after the first deletion. Response loss or retry could therefore affect whether a caller receives the removed values, but the inspected retry sources do not prove replay of an already-executed HGETDEL.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Where key or field names are sensitive, assess access to query telemetry or mask HGETDEL identifiers. Document that callers must treat an interrupted get-and-delete as having an uncertain outcome unless retry behavior is verified.

Add HGETDEL coverage to GlideClusterClientTest.java.

GlideClusterClientTest.java has no hgetdel tests. Add equivalent string and GlideString tests there.

Pre-existing but now fixable: jedis-compat hgetdel (AbstractGlideJedis.java:5593 / :5771) still sends HGETDEL key field... without FIELDS numfields, so every call fails on 9.1 with ERR wrong number of arguments, and the byte[] overload round-trips through new String(bytes). Delegating both to the new typed hgetdel and swapping the two @Disabled JedisTest cases for a 9.1.0 version gate would close it; fine as a follow-up.
