Legacy GTK3 Codex32 wallet GUI loops on current Tails #214

Description

@BenWestgate

Problem

A beta tester on current stable Tails reports that the legacy CipherStick Codex32 wallet-creation flow loops indefinitely:

  1. CipherStick asks them to create a wallet.
  2. They choose Create, but the wallet dialog does not appear.
  3. CipherStick asks for a passphrase for a wallet that does not appear to have been created.
  4. The flow repeats.

Root cause

The legacy wallet flow depends on GTK3 Python helpers installed or referenced through an older Python site-packages path. Current Tails uses a different Python path, so the dialog module is not found and the expected wallet/passphrase window never starts. The caller then returns to the same create/passphrase prompts, which appears as a loop. This is the same failure class as #103.

Confirmed direction

  • Support current stable Tails only for this fix.
  • Remove the broken legacy GTK3 wallet flow rather than porting it.
  • Keep spaced repetition. It is independent of the removed wallet GUI and remains a tester-requested passphrase-memorization feature.
  • Prefer not to retain the Persistent Storage passphrase in process memory. If transient capture is required for spaced-repetition testing without an administration password, keep it only as long as necessary.
  • Do not treat Option to Restart Spaced Repetition #181 as obsolete.

Implementation

#202 removes the obsolete custom wallet path and Sparrow integration. #230 adds the replacement python-codex32 graphical application tracked by #215.

I should reproduce this bug on latest Tails before implementing a fix.

Triaged as a current-master bug that is superseded by the complete legacy-wallet removal in #202. I closed the redundant disable-only PR #229; #214 should remain open until #202 merges because current master still contains the affected path.

We found the cause: this old wallet screen looks for its Python dialog files in a path current Tails no longer uses. The dialog never opens, so setup falls back into the same prompts and appears to loop. We are replacing this old wallet screen rather than repairing it: #202 removes the broken path and #230 adds the replacement.

Consolidated into #201. The selected fix is removal of the legacy GTK3 wallet path rather than porting it; #201 now preserves this tester-reported regression as an explicit acceptance criterion while keeping passphrase practice separate. PR #202 carries the combined change.
