Summary

GlideClient.close() did not detach a standalone connection with a blocking command in flight. With XREADGROUP ... BLOCK 10000 outstanding, close() returned at once and the promise rejected with ClosingError, but the TCP connection stayed attached to the server until the server answered the blocked command, so entries added to the stream after close() were still delivered into the closed consumer's PEL. An idle client had the milder form: its connection lingered in CLIENT LIST for about 3 s after close().

This PR makes close() (and dropping the last clone of a standalone Client) abort the connection driver so the socket closes immediately, without waiting for in-flight replies.

Issue link

This Pull Request is linked to issue: Node: close() does not detach a connection with an in-flight blocking command
Closes #7242

Features / Behaviour Changes

  • Standalone: after close() returns, the server drops the connection within milliseconds. A blocked command is discarded by the server; nothing is delivered to the closed client afterwards.
  • Standalone: dropping the last Client clone closes the socket right away instead of on the next 3 s periodic connection check.
  • In-flight non-blocking requests on a closed client now fail with FatalReceiveError on the Rust side deterministically (JS already saw ClosingError; the reply was previously dropped whenever it arrived).
  • Node only wires the new path for direct clients. Pool-managed handles (create_handle_for_client, close_for_pool_release) are unchanged: the pool owns the Client and hands it to the next borrower.

Implementation

Root cause, three layers, each one sufficient to keep the socket open (line numbers on main at ab65e37cb):

  1. node/rust-client/src/lib.rs:1494-1508 GlideClientHandle::close() marks the response buffer closed and drops command_tx. The worker loop exits, but every in-flight command task still owns a Client clone (Arc<ClientShared>), so the connection lives until the blocked command returns.
  2. glide-core/src/client/standalone_client.rs:100-106 DropWrapper::drop only calls mark_as_dropped(), which sets a flag. The ReconnectingConnection inside start_periodic_connection_check notices it on its next tick (CONNECTION_CHECKS_INTERVAL, 3 s). That is the idle linger.
  3. glide-core/redis-rs/redis/src/aio/multiplexed_connection.rs:706-714 PipelineSink::poll_close waits for every in-flight request before closing the stream, so with all Pipeline clones gone the driver still holds the socket until the server replies. Reference counting alone can never close a connection with a blocking command in flight; the driver has to be aborted.

Changes:

  • redis-rs multiplexed_connection.rs: the pipeline driver is wrapped in futures_util::future::Abortable; Pipeline keeps the AbortHandle. Pipeline::kill() and MultiplexedConnection::kill() abort the driver, which drops the sink and the stream, closes the fd, fails pending requests with FatalReceiveError and later sends with FatalSendError.
  • glide-core reconnecting_connection.rs: kill() marks dropped and kills the current connection under the state lock. mark_as_dropped is idempotent (telemetry decremented once). reconnect() returns early for a dropped connection, and the reconnect task re-checks the dropped flag under the state lock before installing a new connection and kills it instead (closes the race where kill() ran while a reconnect was mid-handshake and found the state Reconnecting). kill() also sets the connection-available signal, and the reconnect task sets it on every dropped exit, so a request parked in get_connection() during a reconnect wakes up and fails with ClientError instead of hanging (before, the task returned on the dropped flag without waking waiters). The PING probe of a new connection is raced against a kill notification: if kill() runs while the probe is outstanding, the task kills the new connection instead of installing it, and a connection whose probe fails is killed rather than left open until the unanswered PING returns.
  • glide-core standalone_client.rs: StandaloneClient::kill(); DropWrapper::drop kills instead of only flagging; the expected cut-off error in send_request is logged at debug when the connection is dropped, and no reconnect is attempted. Telemetry::decr_total_clients moves from StandaloneClient::drop into DropWrapper::drop: StandaloneClient is cloned for every command, so the per-clone decrement drove total_clients to zero while the client was open.
  • glide-core mod.rs: Client::kill() sets a killed flag on ClientShared and kills a standalone wrapper. get_or_initialize_client checks the flag under the write lock, so a lazy client cannot open its connection for a command that was queued before close().
  • node/rust-client/src/lib.rs: create_direct_client's worker calls client.kill().await once the message loop exits, before releasing the worker pool.

Reviewers: the Abortable wrapper in Pipeline::new, the re-check under the state lock in the reconnect task, and the tokio::select! around the PING probe are the spots worth a close look.

Limitations

Client::kill() is a no-op for cluster clients. GlideClusterClient.close() with a blocking command in flight still keeps that node socket open until the server replies: ClusterConnInner owns the node connections and there is no kill path through cluster_async yet. Standalone is the reported case; cluster is a follow-up.

Other bindings (Python, Java, Go, FFI) get the DropWrapper::drop improvement (idle socket closes at drop instead of after up to 3 s) but do not call Client::kill() explicitly in this PR.

Testing

Reproduction probe (Node client built from source, Valkey 9.0.4 standalone on localhost, CLIENT LIST polled every 5 ms from a second client):

case main (ab65e37cb) this PR
close() return 0 ms 0 ms
idle client gone from CLIENT LIST after close() 3004 ms 1 ms
client with XREADGROUP BLOCK 10000 still attached 1 s after close() yes no
XPENDING count after XADD at close+1 s 1 (claimed by the closed consumer) 0
blocked client gone from CLIENT LIST after close() 2996 ms (only because the XADD ended the block; otherwise until BLOCK expiry) 0 ms (gone at the first poll after close() returned)

New tests:

  • node/tests/GlideClient.test.ts "close detaches a client with a blocked command from the server", two variants: eager client, and lazyConnect: true with close() called right after the command is queued. Observer creates stream + group, blocked client (given a unique clientName, matched by name= in CLIENT LIST) issues XREADGROUP BLOCK 30000, the test waits until CLIENT LIST shows it with flag b, calls close(), asserts the promise rejects with ClosingError, requires the client gone from CLIENT LIST within 1 s (eager) or gone and staying gone for 500 ms within a 5 s budget (lazy: the client is not attached before its handshake either, and close() may land while the handshake is in progress, in which case the connection appears and is killed as soon as the handshake finishes), then XADDs and asserts XPENDING is 0. Fails on main (client still attached until the server answers).
  • glide-core unit test client::tests::kill_prevents_lazy_client_from_connecting: kill() then send_command on a lazy client fails with ClientError without connecting. Fails without the killed flag.
  • glide-core test_standalone_client::test_kill_fails_request_waiting_for_reconnect: the server is stopped, a request is parked waiting for the reconnect, kill() is called; the request must fail within 2 s. Hangs (test timeout) without the signal fix.

Checks run locally:

  • cargo fmt --check: glide-core, redis-rs/redis, node/rust-client clean
  • cargo clippy --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings: glide-core, redis-rs/redis, node/rust-client clean
  • glide-core cargo test --lib: 231 passed, 0 failed (the pool::scope_pool_tests spawn a redis-server binary; ran with valkey-server on PATH under that name)
  • redis-rs cargo test --all-features --lib aio::multiplexed_connection: 13 passed, 1 ignored (benchmark)
  • node jest tests/GlideClient.test.ts: 575 passed (573 existing + 2 new), 158.6 s. The new tests alone exit cleanly. After the full file jest prints "Jest did not exit one second after the test run has completed"; the same happens on main (573 passed, same message), so it is not introduced by this change
  • eslint and prettier on the changed Node and Markdown files: clean
  • glide-core cargo test --test test_standalone_client: 53 passed; test_client::test_client_telemetry_standalone passes with the moved decrement

CI note: Java Tests - 17, EngineVersion - 9.0 and Java Tests - 8, EngineVersion - 9.1 failed on ClientPoolIntegrationTest.testAbandonMonitorDoesNotReclaimBlockingClient ("expected 1 active client, got 2"). glidePoolRelease spawns release_client_async (DISCARD + SELECT round trip) and returns, while the test reads getActiveCount() right after its contention threads exit, so a release still in flight counts as active. It failed again on the next push (Java Tests - 8, EngineVersion - 9.0, "got 3") while the other five Java jobs passed, and the same assertion failed on main in run 36069359433 (the push of #7063, which added the test) and on unrelated branches (java.yml runs 36609782318 "got 3" and 36499775069 "got 2"). The pool release path is not touched by this PR.

Dropping every Pipeline clone does not close the socket: the driver's
poll_close waits for all in-flight requests to be answered, so a blocking
command (XREADGROUP BLOCK, BLPOP) keeps the socket open until the server
replies. Wrap the driver in an Abortable and expose kill() on Pipeline and
MultiplexedConnection. Aborting drops the sink and the stream, which closes
the socket and fails pending requests with FatalReceiveError; later sends
fail with FatalSendError.

Part of the fix for valkey-io#7242.

…ropped

DropWrapper::drop only flagged the nodes as dropped; the socket stayed open
until the 3 s periodic connection check noticed the flag, and with a
blocking command in flight until the server replied.

Add ReconnectingConnection::kill (mark dropped, abort the pipeline),
StandaloneClient::kill and Client::kill, and call kill from
DropWrapper::drop. Make mark_as_dropped idempotent so telemetry is
decremented once, skip reconnect for dropped connections, and log the
expected cut-off error at debug instead of warn.

Two orderings are closed as well: a reconnect task that was already
connecting when kill() ran re-checks the dropped flag under the state lock
and kills the new connection instead of installing it; and a killed flag on
ClientShared stops a lazy client from opening its connection for a command
that was queued before close(). The unit test
kill_prevents_lazy_client_from_connecting covers the second ordering and
fails without the flag.

Cluster connections are not covered by Client::kill yet: ClusterConnInner
owns the node connections and there is no kill path through cluster_async.

Part of the fix for valkey-io#7242.

close() dropped the command channel and let the worker loop exit, but the
in-flight command tasks kept Client clones alive. A blocked XREADGROUP kept
its connection attached to the server for up to the BLOCK timeout and the
server kept delivering stream entries to a consumer nobody was reading.
Kill the client once the direct client's message loop exits so the server
drops the connection right away. Pool-managed handles are unchanged: the
pool owns their Client and hands it to the next borrower.

Test: "close detaches a client with a blocked command from the server",
eager and lazyConnect variants. The closed client must leave CLIENT LIST
within 1 s, the pending promise must reject with ClosingError, and an XADD
after close() must not be claimed into the closed consumer's PEL. Fails on
main: the client is still attached after 1 s.

Standalone client shutdown now aborts the connection driver, including when a blocking command is in flight. The Node worker invokes this shutdown path. Tests cover eager and lazy clients, as well as requests waiting for reconnect.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7a289

Closing a standalone lazy client during initialization can still leave its connection attached and delay worker shutdown. Resolve this cancellation gap before merging, or explicitly accept the limitation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7a289

Established connections now detach more reliably. However, closing a lazy connection that is already initializing can leave cleanup waiting indefinitely when the configured server stops responding.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Direct-client cleanup now waits for kill before releasing its worker-pool reference, but kill cannot reach connections owned by lazy initialization while initialization holds the write lock. With replication discovery enabled, a server that completes connection setup and then withholds INFO REPLICATION can leave this cleanup pending indefinitely. The pre-existing discovery wait therefore becomes a dependency of the newly introduced terminal cleanup sequence.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Explicit standalone kill affects every node connection belonging to that shared client, including connections used by retained clones. Client::kill does not directly tear down initialized cluster connections. The new Node invocation is confined to direct-client workers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The pool ownership boundary is preserved: a pool-managed handle's worker exits without killing the reusable Client, whereas the direct-client worker explicitly kills it before releasing its worker-pool reference.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure containment remains incomplete during lazy replication discovery. For a connection that is neither read-only nor using static discovery, withholding the INFO reply can retain the initialization lock, live connection, and newly cleanup-dependent worker-pool reference. The connection timeout bounds establishment and retries, not this subsequent discovery response.

The shutdown races already called out in existing threads should be resolved. I found one cleanup-accounting issue in the same ownership path and one source of nondeterminism in the regression test.

Since this is the last-StandaloneClient-clone cleanup, it should also own the Telemetry::decr_total_clients(1) currently in StandaloneClient::drop at lines 113–117. get_or_initialize_client() clones the ClientWrapper for every command (client/mod.rs:996–1000), but total_clients is incremented only once at creation (line 652), so every completed command currently decrements the metric and it quickly reports zero while the client is still open. Move that decrement into DropWrapper::drop alongside these node kills.

Identify the blocked connection with a unique clientName rather than matching every cmd=xreadgroup entry. The suite supports shared external endpoints and Jest runs test files concurrently; another client blocked in XREADGROUP then makes both predicates observe the wrong connection, so this test can fail after the client under test detached. GlideClient.test.ts:2120–2136 already uses the deterministic name=<unique> CLIENT LIST pattern for this reason.

…ient reconnects

kill() marked the connection dropped and closed the installed socket, but a
request parked in get_connection() during a reconnect kept waiting: the
reconnect task returned on the dropped flag without setting the
connection-available signal, so the request never woke up. Set the signal in
kill() and on every dropped exit of the reconnect task, and make
get_connection() return a ClientError once the connection is dropped.

The reconnect task is also the only owner of a new connection until its PING
probe returns, so kill() could not reach that socket. Race the probe against
a kill notification and close the connection when kill wins. A connection
whose probe fails is now killed as well instead of staying open until the
unanswered PING returns.

Adds test_kill_fails_request_waiting_for_reconnect, which hangs without
the signal fix.

…r clone

StandaloneClient is cloned for every command in get_or_initialize_client, and
each clone's Drop decremented Telemetry::total_clients while the metric is
incremented only once at creation. Move the decrement into DropWrapper::drop,
which runs when the last clone is gone.

Matching every CLIENT LIST entry with cmd=xreadgroup picks up other test
files blocked in XREADGROUP on a shared server. Give the client under test a
unique name and match on it, as the lazy-connect test already does.

Cancel reconnect setup on shutdown.

get_multiplexed_connection() wraps client connection creation in run_with_timeout, but it does not observe kill_notify. During setup, new_with_response_timeout polls the setup commands with the socket-owning driver. A kill() during this await cannot interrupt setup, so shutdown can leave the socket active until setup completes or the connection timeout expires.

Race shutdown with the full connection-creation future. Dropping that future drops the local driver and stream. If a driver has already been handed off, abort it explicitly.

poll() left its loop as soon as the predicate held and then re-evaluated
it for the return value. For a lazy client "not attached" is also the
state before the handshake, and close() can land while that handshake is
in progress: the connection then appears and is killed as soon as the
handshake completes, so the re-evaluation saw it attached and the test
failed in a few milliseconds (seen in CI on Node 20.x / Valkey 9.0 and
locally about one run in ten).

poll() now returns the value it observed. The lazy variant requires the
client to stay detached for 500 ms within a 5 s budget instead of a
single observation; the eager variant keeps the 1 s bound. BLOCK is
raised to 30 s so the budget is clearly below the server-side timeout.

LGTM, just needs a rebase.

Note that a similar fix for scoped connections is under #7462, which cherry-picks the kill() method from this PR so both paths use the same method.
